There’s one place in Bantayan that locals and tourists go to for the best sunset views!
Photo by Tony Nemenzo Sarita | Sugbo.PH Contributor
A 4th class municipality in Cebu with a population of about 40,000. Madridejos, or the Municipality of Madridejos, makes up Bantayan Island facing the Visayan Sea.
From “Lawis” to “Madridejos”
Originally, the municipality was known as “Lawis,” which meant “promontory,” or a raised land overseeing a low body of water. Soon enough, the place was renamed “Madridejos” in honor of the former archbishop of Cebu, Benito Romero de Madridejos. However, amidst the name change, most locals still refer to the original name today due to them being used to it.

The turquoise waters and clear horizon provide the perfect backdrop for unforgettable moments and stunning Instagram shots. And so, here are some of the most magnificent sunset pics that’ll give you a glimpse of what awaits you at Madridejos!

Sugboanons, there’s no need to worry nor panic – for real!

The eruption of Mount Kanlaon caused havoc, not only in Negros Occidental but also in the rest of the Visayan region along with other places nearby places in Southern Luzon, Mindanao, and Palawan. Why? Well, according to the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, they spotted that clouds carrying sulfur dioxide (SO₂) had been blown towards the aforementioned areas in the Philippines.
Screengrab from Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology
However, following a photo shared by a netizen online showing what seemed to be a hazy afternoon in the Queen City of the South, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) clarified that there’s no need to panic because the sulfur dioxide (SO₂) levels in Cebu’s air is still within breathable and safe ranges.
Screengrab from PAGASA
But, of course, it’s never too early to get to know what would happen in the event that those levels go beyond normal. So, here are some expected aftermath for breathing in the chemical, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.gov):
Can cause eye and skin irritation
Can result in nose and throat irritation causing nasal mucus, choking, and cough
Severe exposure can result in bronchospasm, pulmonary edema, pneumonitis, and acute airway obstruction.
Low exposures can even aggravate asthma and emphysema.
Symptoms of Sulfur Dioxide Poisoning

When one inhales sulfur dioxide, a few symptoms will show up once it hits beyond the normal level such as sore throat, sneezing, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and a feeling of suffocation. However, as of this writing, PAGASA hasn’t released any statement regarding the need for wearing facemasks and doing precautionary measures in terms of the sulfur dioxide levels in Cebu.

Yes, you read that right – sheep, goat, and cow intestines are the unsung heroes behind some of your favorite things!
Ever heard of catgut? No, it’s not made from cats (phew!), but it’s a cord extracted from the walls of animal intestines. And it’s not just used for violins, but also for something a little more modern – condoms!
Our Ancestors Got Real Creative!
Back in the day, people didn’t have fancy synthetic materials and plastics like we do now. So, when it came to making musical instruments and protection, they had to think outside the box. And what’s more creative than using animal guts, right?
However, it begs the question: why sheep, goat, and cow intestines? Well, it’s simply because these animals have tough yet flexible guts that are perfect for crafting strings and sheaths. Plus, they were readily available as people in the olden days used to slaughter their own meat for food and other uses.
Photo from Canva
The Melodious Sounds of Violins
Imagine Beethoven shredding on his violin – that beautiful sound you hear? Yeah, it’s specifically thanks to those trusty animal intestines. The natural properties of catgut give violin strings their unique tone and resonance, making them a favorite among musicians for centuries. The higher the quality of catgut, the better the sound it makes on a violin!
However, since metal and other materials are already in today’s generation, most violins and string instruments are no longer made of guts! So, rest assured you can definitely choose what material you’d prefer for your instrument.
Photo from Lindsey Sterling’s Official Instagram
How Catgut Is Prepped for Violins
If you want to get historical and maybe prepare your own violin strings from intestines, then here are some of the steps for your catgut preparation:
Step 1: Clean the small intestines to free them from fat.
Step 2: Steep the cleaned intestines in water.
Step 3: Scrape all external membranes and steep again in potassium hydroxide.
Step 4: Draw the intestines out and smooth them.
Step 5: Twist to make a string and vary it depending on the type that you’re making, whether it’s an E or A, etc.
Step 6: Let the strings dry.
Step 7: Polish the strings.
Step 8: Dye the strings, if you prefer.
Some even wrap the strings in metal or another material to make it last longer. Also, aside from violins, catgut strings were used in early surgical sutures, tennis rackets, grandfather clocks, and even pocket watches.
Photo from Andre Rieu’s Official Instagram
Condoms Made from Lamb Guts
But lo and behold, there’s another twist in this gutsy tale – condoms! Before latex and other modern materials were invented, people still needed protection. Enter: animal intestines, specifically lamb’s cecum! Yep, our ancestors were using lambskin (again, not technically a lam’s skin) to create protections for safe sex. It might sound a little gross at first, but it worked!
Photo from Canva
Wanna try it out? Well, the good news is you still can! Lambskin condoms are still available globally. However, it may be a bit on the pricey side because of its production costs. According to those who have used it, lambskin offers more sensation as compared to its latex counterpart, and it also feels more natural.
Photo from Canva
So, there you have it – the quirky, unexpected history of how sheep, goat, lamb, and cow intestines became the go-to strings and safe sex protections of our ancestors. Have anything to add to the gutsy history? Share it to us in the comments below!
Sugboanons, get ready to extend your Taiwan travel goals!
Photo from Canva
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a significant development, announced yesterday, June 4, 2024, that Filipinos can now enjoy an extended travel period to Taiwan for another year, until July 31, 2025, with a maximum stay of 14 days!
Photo from Ram Mancelita
However, certain passport holders, such as officials, service passport holders, and diplomatic passport holders, are not eligible for the aforementioned visa exemption.
Photo from Anne Curtis’ Official Instagram Acct
“MOFA will continue to review and fine-tune visa policies, with a view to strengthening bilateral exchanges and attracting more visitors while ensuring border and public security,” the ministry stated. “MOFA will also continue to communicate with the governments of related countries to enhance visa treatment for Taiwan nationals and make their overseas travel more convenient,” they added.
Photo from Ram Mancelita
Since August 1, 2023, Taiwan has been progressively opening its doors to Filipinos. This has been reflected in the regular updates to its annual visa-free bulletin, as Taiwan eases its borders for international travelers and continues to recover from the aftermath of the 2020 pandemic.
X (formerly Twitter) has recently updated their guidelines and policies to become even more user-friendly. But one policy struck Netizens in shock – the Adult Content Policy!
Before OnlyFans (O.F.) became a global sensation as a platform for adult content creators, Twitter was one of the key places where nude content was posted and shared, although not officially. Nevertheless, it set the stage for what would later become a widespread phenomenon and a change of policy.
On X.com’s Adult Content Policy guideline, it is stated that adult nudity or sexual behavior can be posted on the website, “You may share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior, provided it’s properly labeled and not prominently displayed.”
Reading more into the policy itself gives the X.com users details on what they can and cannot post in terms of the latest update; these includes the following:
full or partial nudity;
close-ups of genitals, buttocks, or breasts;
explicit or implied sexual behavior;
simulated acts such as sexual intercourse and other sexual acts.
Warning: Adult Content
Because explicit content isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, X.com (formerly known as Twitter) has implemented protective measures to help users control the content they see while scrolling. One such feature is the “content warning,” which plays a crucial role in maintaining a safer browsing experience. With it, users will see blurred posts if ever it’s an explicit or sexual content. If a user clicks on the post or agrees to view NSFW (Not Safe for Work) content, the blurring is removed, revealing the image or video. This feature empowers users to make informed decisions about the content they wish to engage with, enhancing their overall experience on the platform.
In addition to content warnings, X.com also encourages its users to actively participate in maintaining a respectful community. Users are urged to report any unmarked explicit content they come across. This community-driven approach helps the platform quickly identify and manage inappropriate posts, ensuring that unmarked explicit content is properly flagged and handled.
What do you think of this update, Sugboanons? Will it be detrimental to our current generation and society, or not? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
One of the reasons why a lot of people choose to stay here in Cebu is because of how it is rich in famous and beautiful spots to visit, aside from its astounding infrastructure and high buildings.
Cebu is divided into two parts: The northern and southern parts of Cebu. In the northern part of Cebu, one place is the most famous for its pristine beach and white sand, and that is Bantayan Island of Cebu. One of the beautiful beaches on Bantayan Island is Baigad Lagoon Beach.

Before Baigad Lagoon Beach became one of the noteworthy beaches on Bantayan Island, it underwent rigorous restoration and renovation without causing much harm and disrupting any natural habitat. It made the resort’s clean landscape we see today.
