By Commute: Take a jeepney or bus bound for Liloan from Cebu City (SM City or North Bus Terminal). Upon reaching the Liloan Public Market or town proper, ride a habal-habal (motorbike taxi) and ask the driver to bring you to Barangay Mulao. Travel time may vary depending on the road condition, but the adventure and views are well worth the trip.

What if honoring a hero accidentally awakened the wrath of one?
The scent in the wind of Opon, Lapu-Lapu, is more than just the rush of the seabreeze; it carries legends and a curse that the locals believed once before. In the waves of the Mactan Channel that hit the shore, a 20-meter Bronze statue of Datu Lapu-Lapu, the first Filipino hero to repel foreign invaders on the island, stands. Its original bow and arrow, long replaced by its stories, are still in the memories of the elders. But beyond its fascinating structure and memorial lies a tale that questions its authenticity, whether it was a good idea that evokes goosebumps in visitors and locals every time they hear this tale.
Face Off Gone Wrong
The creation of the statue was intended to commemorate the historic victory of Lapu-Lapu over Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and serve as a symbol of national pride, reminding us of the sacrifices made by our local heroes. Yet from the moment it was finished, strange things started to happen, and something feels off and wrong. The bow of Lapu-Lapu was not aimed at the foreign invaders, but it was shot straight at the town’s center of governance. The stand of the warriors, with its back turned to the sea, led his people to triumph for freedom. Primarily, a warrior never turns his back on his enemy, as they murmur, which was no mere artistic insight but a grave insult to his spirit. They believe that the statue’s posture has awakened something relentless in the air as a presence that refuses to be ignored.

Fatalities Within the Wreckage
A strange occurrence began the moment the statue was completed. The officials involved in its construction encountered various challenges. The Opon Municipal President, Rito de la Serna, who had overseen the construction and completion of the monument, suddenly passed away months later. He is also a local politician who dismissed critics and successors; moreover, a local politician who rejected critics and successors has died in mysterious ways, alongside Simeon Amodia and his cousin Gregorio de la Serna. Is it a coincidence? Maybe, but in a land where folklore and reality collide with each other, the people in Mactan know better than to test the spirit’s patience.

When Mayor Arturo Radaza proposed relocating the monument to face the sea in 2007, the project was unexpectedly stalled, despite having allocated funds. Whether out of fear or symbolism, this act was seen as a gesture of peace, and a way to let the spirit’s fury ease. Even though there are no new misfortunes publicly linked during the revision of the statute, the legend still lived on in hushed tones.

On July 10, 2025, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) officially launched the Online Driver’s License Renewal System (ODLRS). This move finally lets Filipino drivers skip the lines and renew their licenses from their phones.

The new system, integrated within the eGovPH mobile app, is a component of the government’s initiative to digitize its services. It’s not merely focused on enhancing convenience; it also aims to transform the way individuals interact with government agencies entirely.
How Does It Work?
The ODLRS is integrated into the eGovPH app, which serves as a one-stop platform for government services available on both iOS and Android. Through this app, drivers can conveniently upload their license details, take a compliant selfie, and complete a medical exam via teleconsultation. Additionally, they can participate in the mandatory five-hour Online Driver’s Enhancement Program (ODEP) and make payments online. Once all requirements are met, users will receive a digital license directly within the app. Furthermore, there are plans to have the physical license delivered to users in select pilot areas soon.
It’s a full-service experience — no need to visit an LTO branch unless required.
Just a heads up before you start the process.
Before you start using the system, ensure that your license is either valid or has expired for less than two years. Additionally, it’s important to confirm that you have no unsettled violations. Lastly, you will need to complete the online medical exam and obtain your ODEP certificate within the app.
You’ll also need a stable internet connection and a valid government-issued ID for verification.
How to renew your driver’s license?
To renew your driver’s license using the eGovPH app, start by downloading the app and registering for an account. Once you’re set up, navigate to the “LTO Services” section and select Online Driver’s License Renewal. You’ll need to upload images of your current license, showing both the front and back. The app will then prompt you to take a selfie, guiding you through the process to ensure it meets the required standards.
Get Your Medical Certificate
Next, you can book an accredited medical exam through the app’s in-app teleconsult feature. After that, finish the Online Digital Exam Process (ODEP), keeping in mind that you can pause and resume at your convenience. When it comes to payment, you’ll have various digital payment options available to settle the renewal fee.

It was a Friday, and we figured it was about time we took a break from the whole corporate grind. So, we went looking for a place where we could relax but still have a bit of fun. A peak where it’s more than an eye full and has a unique, beautiful scenery of its own, Osmeña Peak is Cebu’s highest peak, reaching 1,013 meters above sea level, which claims the title of Cebu’s highest point and one of the must-visit if you are interested in the beauty of the sunrise. The peak is located in Badian but can be easily reached from the starting point in Dalaguete. This natural scenic view draws trekkers and adventurers, offering a view that stretches across places in Bohol, Negros, and the Tañon Strait. The trek can start in Dalaguete, also known as the “Vegetable Basket of Cebu.” The hike is excellent for those seeking an easy to moderate experience, with a summit accessible in under 30 minutes, set in a grassy landscape featuring stone formations that are easy for people, whether first-timers or not. The mountain will turn into a golden light that contrasts with the sky while the nearby ocean shimmers in the distance. The scent of the mountain grass and the crispness of the air create a peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for relaxation or meditation.

Don’t Snooze the Views
Consider starting before sunrise on a weekday to have the best hiking experience. Many travelers depart from the city late at night, arriving in Dalaguete or Moalboal, and then take a habal-habal to the trail’s starting point. Although there are some difficulties on the final hiking trail, it is still manageable for most. However, a guide is still recommended for first-time hikers. At the summit, people take various photos, picnic, camp, or simply enjoy the breathtaking view of the island before the place is lit up by the warm sunlight that strikes the mountain.
By Commute: Make your way to the South Bus Terminal and catch a bus heading to Dalaguete or one that passes through Dalaguete on its way to Bato. The ride typically takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Let the conductor know you’re getting off at the Eskina or corner going to Mantalongon. From there, hop on a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) for a 30- to 40-minute uphill journey to the Mantalongon Market, which serves as the jump-off point to Osmeña Peak. Once there, you can begin the trek to the summit either with a guide or on your own.
By Car: If you’re driving to Osmeña Peak, simply use navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze and set your destination to Mantalongon Market in Dalaguete, Cebu. From Cebu City, take the South Road Properties and follow the main highway heading south toward Dalaguete. Once you reach the town proper, look out for signs or follow directions leading up to Mantalongon. The road becomes narrower and steeper as you ascend, but it’s passable by private vehicles. Upon reaching the market area, you can park nearby and start your short trek to Osmeña Peak.

1. Tonggo Beach
Tonggo beach or also known as “Ka-Tero” is a mini-paradise nestled in Marigondon. The low-hanging cliffs suspended over the shallow azure waters create canopies that provide shade from the sun while soaking in the water.
On the other side of the water is a verdant backdrop made by a couple of shrubs and ferns and a few occasional trees. There are also grasslands that are perfect for pitching tents while waiting for dust – an equally pleasing experience without getting in the water.
There are tents for rent but are only limited so it would be a great idea to bring your own.

BY COMMUTE: Ride a 01K Jeepney to Parkmall from SM City or E-mall. In Parkmall, take a MI-04A jeepney going to Tamiya terminal. You can confirm with the jeepney drivers if they are passing by Tamiya terminal. From Tamiya, ride another multicab to Crossing Marigondon. Once there, look for habal-habal drivers and negotiate a ride to Eskina Bluereef or Ocean Pearl. If they’re willing, you can also ask them to just drop you off at the eskina of Tonggo Beach to shorten the distance to walk to the island.
2. Marigondon Public Beach
Despite being a public beach, this is considered as one of the finest public beaches in the Philippines even to the point that it rivals the beauty of the world-famous Boracay.
People frequent the fine white sands and pristine waters of the beach especially on weekends. Aside from being on par with the beauty of 5-star resorts, the coral reefs 300 yards off the beach also make it a hot spot for scuba divers because of its accessibility.
The aquatic flora and fauna thriving in the reef is something worth seeing as well.

3. Crab Island
The Crab Island is already quite popular among the locals of Mactan. But not too many people know about this “hidden paradise” yet. Technically, there’s no entrance fee but there are some residents who might charge a “Tour Guide” fee, and we recommend to avail this as a help to preserve this attraction.

4. San Vicente Marine Fish Sanctuary
This area is considered as one of the most extensive reefs in the region. This 4,482-hectare island contains stretches of sandy beaches, rocky shoreline, and an abundance of marine life.
It is perfect for swimming and snorkeling around with the fishes in the water. This paradise belonging to the Olango Island Mactan Group is another budget destination for everybody.

5. Punta Engaño
Punta Engaño is the only public beach in this list that is not a pure white sand beach. Instead, Punta Engaño Beach is a natural collection of rocks and sand lining the coast and lush, green vegetation growing on some of the rock formations.

The beach itself features picturesque white sand framed by limestone cliffs and coconut palms that surround the island. However, keep in mind that it is not formally known as “Little Kawasan” because it is only a comparison based on its likeness to the well-known, if smaller, Kawasan Falls in Badian.
The Hot Spring in Question
In Filipino, “mainit” means “hot,” and this spring certainly lives up to the description. Nestled beside the Montañeza River, this group of four geothermal pools has temperatures between 35.8°C and 42.6°C. While the colder pools are ideal for full-body immersion, the hotter ones are frequently utilized for foot soaks. Although it serves a distinct function, the Mainit hot spring’s thermal waters provide a soothing spa experience in the middle of a forest.

The hot spring has 4 pools and is arranged in tiers beside the river, hence the comparison to the Kawasan Falls. It is surrounded by bamboo forests, coconut palms, and a limestone cliff backdrop, and the artificial pools are constructed out of stone and concrete right into the riverbed. Shock-Proof Sanctuary
The church withstood the 2013 earthquake and Typhoon Odette thanks to its structure and architectural design. These pieces include massive walls that make the structure balanced, absorbing shocks more effectively to protect it from being torn. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines leads the restoration efforts to maintain its original structure.

Used in defense, the place offers a combination of faith and defense, as evident in what the church has endured. The bell tower once served as a watchtower to help guard against attack, and it shaped the town’s development, standing as a symbol of hope, faith, and safety in the city. During past earthquakes, several parts of the structure suffered significant damage, including cracked walls, falling debris, and damage to the original bells. The community’s faith was never crushed, as this made them even stronger and more faithful as they continued to attend Mass and gather in the ruins, which shows their dedication and deep connection to the church.
