Cave In, Climb Up: Catmon’s Hidden Double Dose

Hidden beneath the mountains of Catmon lies a thrilling surprise for adventurers. Here, you don’t just hike a scenic peak—you descend into the depths of a cave in one of Cebu’s hiking destinations.

Take pleasure in the heart of Barangay Kabangkaya, where uproarious trails meet the mysterious depth of the Lumanoy Cave. It’s not simply just a hike—experience the sensation bodily and spiritually.

Ari Diri Ta Sa Mt. Kapayas, Saka Ta!

Mt. Kapayas, or locally known as Torre Peak, is considered as the second-highest peak located at Sitio Kampanya, Barangay Kabangkaya, Catmon, Cebu. Hikers often described it as “reminiscent of Bukidnon” s with its sweeping landscapes and cool mountain breeze offering a refreshing escape from the city’s chaos.  The trails test one’s endurance and determination winding through dense greenery, slippery slopes, and narrow ridges. The summit offers panoramic views of northern Cebu’s coastline and rolling hills.

Musaka Ta? Ay Naog Diay sa Lumanoy Cave

Hidden along the trail lies another kind of journey—one that leads downward. Lumanoy Cave demands a different kind of courage with its narrow opening of the cave mouth and the slippery steps on your way down. With headlamps flickering in the dark and courage as their compass, spelunkers navigate the cave’s narrow crevices and winding passages. While no recent formal explorations have been documented, the cave remains accessible to the public as part of the Torre Peak trek.

How To Get There?

Exact Location: Sitio Kampanya, Brgy. Kabangkaya, Catmon, Cebu

By Commute: From there, it’s a short walk to a habal-habal station (motorcycle taxi station) offering rides to Sitio Kampanya. For larger groups or guided treks, transportation can also be arranged via vans, multicabs, or even trucks usually coordinated through local guides.

By Car: Use Waze or Google Maps and set your destination to Catmon Municipal Hall. From there, ask locals for directions to Barangay Agsuwao—the final stop for 4-wheeled vehicles. Beyond this point, the road to Sitio Kampanya becomes too rugged and soft for standard vehicles, so you’ll need to transfer to a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) or hike the rest of the way.

Let’s Rock n’ Form: Malingin Rock In Liloan Gaining Smash

These rocks sparked a love for geology that I didn’t know I had.

Photo from Google Map

Standing raw, rugged, and a beautiful wonder of Cebu’s diverse geological landscape, the Rock Formations of Liloan’s Cliffs are located in Barangay Mulao, Liloan, Cebu. The area has been inhabited and known to locals for centuries, with its breathtaking features, such as beaches, cliffs, and caves, being part of the community’s landscape and home long before it became a tourist spot. The stunning formation has been a part of the local communities for over a century, with cliffs, caves, and beaches that serve as a landmark and a source of livelihood for the locals long before it gained popularity among visitors.

‘Arc’ You Seeing This Too?

One of its notable formations is the Stone Arc, also known as the Malingin Rocks, an arc standing on two rocks, inspired by the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. However, there’s no official naming or documented folklore associated with it, but it’s a fun saying that people discuss and take an interest in. For mountaineers and trekking enthusiasts, this hidden gem awaits you! This wonder is a favorite among photographers and geologists, offering a great backdrop and different formations against the water and sky.  For those seeking adventure and immersion in nature, this may be perfect for you! For those unsure of where to turn, this is a haven for you!

Where The Rocks Slay, You Slay Your Way

The cliff is a hidden gem waiting to be explored by people, especially for trekkers, mountaineers, and those who enjoy outdoor activities. The terrain provides a challenging trek for hikers. At the same time, some of the surrounding beaches and caves offer opportunities for swimming, jumping, and spelunking, which is perfect if you are looking for an adrenaline rush to your mind or a peaceful escape to nature, as anyone here can have anything all at once.

Stop Over For A Second

Beyond Mulao, the town of Liloan offers a variety to explore. One of these places was founded as a parish in 1845 and was already known for its scenic coastal areas long before it was formally recognized as a town. A historic church, San Fernando El Rey Parish, showcases Spanish-era architecture and was used as a shelter during World War II, adding a historical dimension to your visit. It is now home to mesmerizing destinations, including various resorts around the area where you can stay, relax, and enjoy yourself with their accommodations. Liloan itself is rich in history and culture, with sites such as the wartime limestone caves in Barangay San Vicente and the historic San Fernando El Rey Parish, adding depth to each visit.

How To Get There

Exact Location: Mulao, Liloan, Cebu

  • By Car: If you’re traveling by car, you can easily reach the site using navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze by simply entering “Mulao Rock Formations”  as your destination. The route typically takes you through the town proper of Liloan and up to the upland barangays via well-paved and rough roads.
  • By Commute: Take a jeepney or bus bound for Liloan from Cebu City (SM City or North Bus Terminal). Upon reaching the Liloan Public Market or town proper, ride a habal-habal (motorbike taxi) and ask the driver to bring you to Barangay Mulao. Travel time may vary depending on the road condition, but the adventure and views are well worth the trip.

As Liloan continues to develop its tourism potential, these rock formations and cliffs stand out as a must-visit destination for those who appreciate nature’s rugged artistry and the thrill of exploration. Whether you want to go alone, with a group of friends, or bond with your family as you seek an adventure, this place promises an experience that you will never forget.

Did Lapu Lapu Curse Us?

What if honoring a hero accidentally awakened the wrath of one?

The scent in the wind of Opon, Lapu-Lapu, is more than just the rush of the seabreeze; it carries legends and a curse that the locals believed once before. In the waves of the Mactan Channel that hit the shore, a 20-meter Bronze statue of Datu Lapu-Lapu, the first Filipino hero to repel foreign invaders on the island, stands. Its original bow and arrow, long replaced by its stories, are still in the memories of the elders. But beyond its fascinating structure and memorial lies a tale that questions its authenticity, whether it was a good idea that evokes goosebumps in visitors and locals every time they hear this tale.

Face Off Gone Wrong

The creation of the statue was intended to commemorate the historic victory of Lapu-Lapu over Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and serve as a symbol of national pride, reminding us of the sacrifices made by our local heroes. Yet from the moment it was finished, strange things started to happen, and something feels off and wrong. The bow of Lapu-Lapu was not aimed at the foreign invaders, but it was shot straight at the town’s center of governance. The stand of the warriors, with its back turned to the sea, led his people to triumph for freedom. Primarily, a warrior never turns his back on his enemy, as they murmur, which was no mere artistic insight but a grave insult to his spirit.  They believe that the statue’s posture has awakened something relentless in the air as a presence that refuses to be ignored.

Photo from Google Maps

Fatalities Within the Wreckage

A strange occurrence began the moment the statue was completed. The officials involved in its construction encountered various challenges. The Opon Municipal President, Rito de la Serna, who had overseen the construction and completion of the monument, suddenly passed away months later. He is also a local politician who dismissed critics and successors; moreover, a local politician who rejected critics and successors has died in mysterious ways, alongside Simeon Amodia and his cousin Gregorio de la Serna. Is it a coincidence? Maybe, but in a land where folklore and reality collide with each other, the people in Mactan know better than to test the spirit’s patience.

The Soul of What Remains

The attempt to correct the statue’s orientation is met with an eerie resistance. When Mayor Arturo Radaza proposed relocating the monument to face the sea in 2007, the project was unexpectedly stalled, despite having allocated funds. The construction crews report some unusual events, including equipment failures, the disappearance of tools overnight, and an overwhelming sense of fear when working near the site. Whether out of fear or symbolism, this act was seen as a gesture of peace, and a way to let the spirit’s fury ease. Even though there are no new misfortunes publicly linked during the revision of the statute, the legend still lived on in hushed tones.

Warrior Wakes the Wise Ones

The Visayan community believes that modern worries are often connected to ancestral spirits and sacred places. In pre-colonial times, people thought that the souls of warriors protected their battlefields forever, and the sea was honored as the main home of their ancestral god. Some community members worry that certain modern statues may be disrespectful because they overlook both historical significance and the sea’s importance. This concern ties back to legends about disturbed ancestral grounds, which are thought to cause bad luck. Stories about events like the controversial digging up of ancient burial sites near Cordova highlight the need to respect cultural heritage and sacred spaces.

Photo from Canva

The statue stands as a mysterious yet popular attraction during the day, drawing tourists while locals maintain a wary distance after sunset. Although the original statue has been replaced, its stories linger in the memories of the elders. The eerie tales surrounding the deaths of certain officials may have transformed into legend, yet the statue remains a link to the past. It invites us to look beyond mere myth and to confront the complex, often unsettling ways we remember our heroes.

True history, as it turns out, is not solely found in textbooks but is embedded in the whispered fears, beliefs, and warnings that are shared through generations. The idea of a curse may not be rooted in the supernatural, but rather in our tendency to overlook the deeper truths.

Skip the Line: You Can Now Renew Your Driver’s License Online—Here’s How

On July 10, 2025, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) officially launched the Online Driver’s License Renewal System (ODLRS). This move finally lets Filipino drivers skip the lines and renew their licenses from their phones.

The new system, integrated within the eGovPH mobile app, is a component of the government’s initiative to digitize its services. It’s not merely focused on enhancing convenience; it also aims to transform the way individuals interact with government agencies entirely.

How Does It Work?

The ODLRS is integrated into the eGovPH app, which serves as a one-stop platform for government services available on both iOS and Android. Through this app, drivers can conveniently upload their license details, take a compliant selfie, and complete a medical exam via teleconsultation. Additionally, they can participate in the mandatory five-hour Online Driver’s Enhancement Program (ODEP) and make payments online. Once all requirements are met, users will receive a digital license directly within the app. Furthermore, there are plans to have the physical license delivered to users in select pilot areas soon.

It’s a full-service experience — no need to visit an LTO branch unless required.

Just a heads up before you start the process.

Before you start using the system, ensure that your license is either valid or has expired for less than two years. Additionally, it’s important to confirm that you have no unsettled violations. Lastly, you will need to complete the online medical exam and obtain your ODEP certificate within the app.

You’ll also need a stable internet connection and a valid government-issued ID for verification.

How to renew your driver’s license?

To renew your driver’s license using the eGovPH app, start by downloading the app and registering for an account. Once you’re set up, navigate to the “LTO Services” section and select Online Driver’s License Renewal. You’ll need to upload images of your current license, showing both the front and back. The app will then prompt you to take a selfie, guiding you through the process to ensure it meets the required standards.

Get Your Medical Certificate

Next, you can book an accredited medical exam through the app’s in-app teleconsult feature. After that, finish the Online Digital Exam Process (ODEP), keeping in mind that you can pause and resume at your convenience. When it comes to payment, you’ll have various digital payment options available to settle the renewal fee.

With the implementation of the ODLRS, renewing a license in the Philippines has become remarkably more efficient. You can say goodbye to the hassle of commuting to various offices, the annoyance of dealing with fixers, and the countless hours wasted in long lines. This innovative system transforms what was once a stressful experience into a quick and streamlined process, making it a truly modern solution for today’s drivers.

Is Solea Mactan Worth It? We Checked In—Here’s the Real Tea

Is Solea really paradise? Well, we went and here’s what we think…

It was a Friday, and we figured it was about time we took a break from the whole corporate grind. So, we went looking for a place where we could relax but still have a bit of fun. After scrolling through the internet (as usual), we stumbled upon that familiar blue logo of Solea and thought—hmmm, this could be it. So, we booked a room and packed up for the weekend.

It did feel like a private island, with tons of pools!

The resort’s layout makes it feel like you’ve escaped far away, even though it’s just within Mactan. It’s wide and spacious, with lots of pools, open areas, and ocean views that scream “vacay mode!” from the moment you step in. You’ll find cozy loungers by the pool, modern tropical interiors in their rooms, and wide-open views of the sea that are IG-worthy in every corner.

If you’re the type who can’t get enough of pools, Solea Mactan Resort is basically your dream come true. They don’t just have one or two; they have eight pools and one inflatable waterpark.

But, if you’re up for something a little more active, Solea’s got a floating inflatable waterpark filled with obstacle courses out in the sea that’s open from 9 AM to 6 PM. It’s for those who want a bit of a challenge and perfect if you want to shake things up after lounging in the pool.

To make the most of your stay, it helps to know the pool hours, too. The beach is open from 8 AM to 5 PM, while the main infinity pool runs from 7 AM to 9 PM. Other pools like the Nina Pool, Karen Pool, and Kath Pool are available from 9 AM to 6 PM. For a splash of fun, the Aqua Park is open from 10 AM to 7 PM, and Aqua Play from 9 AM to 7 PM. Richie Pool gives you longer hours on weekends (7 AM to 9 PM), while Rose Pool opens later on weekdays but extends up to 9 PM on weekends. Whatever your swimming style is, Solea has a pool for it.

We wanted to just stay in and binge-watch whatever…

Working a 9-to-5 in the corporate world does a number on your back, brain, and just about every inch of your body; so when we finally opened the door to our room at Solea, we just wanted to melt into the bed. It was so hard to get back up because everything in the room screamed, “Stay. Rest. Don’t move.”

The space was modern and comfy, with floor-to-ceiling windows that gave us a relaxing view of the pools and the beautiful seas beyond. The interiors were soft and neutral with white sheets, earthy tones, cozy lighting; the kind that makes you want to stay in bed all day with a romcom on screen or your playlist on loop. Even the bathroom had that sleek hotel vibe we all love, with care kits ready in case you forgot your essentials. Honestly? It’s the kind of room that feels like a reward after all the deadlines.

If you’re looking to rejuvenate and recharge, SOLEA’s also got you covered with the Nouveau Spa and the Health Club gym. Prefer to stay in? They also offer in-room spa services, so you can chill without even leaving your bed.

And guess what? There’s more coming soon as they’re leveling up the vacation experience with new spots like Mozza, a Smash Room, a Recreation Center, and even more arcade games.

Food Trip at Earth and Salt & Sky

When it comes to food, Solea Mactan doesn’t play around. Their in-house buffet restaurant, Earth, has a solid mix of local and international favorites that’ll keep your taste buds busy all day long. Mornings are made better with crispy bacon, fluffy pancakes, and an omelette station that’s always a hit. For lunch and dinner, you’ll find savory dishes like grilled seafood, juicy lechon belly, flavorful pasta, and even veggie options for the more health-conscious.

But if you’re more into just chillin’ with cocktails on hand, then the Salt & Sky Rooftop Lounge, the Cuckoo Pool Bar, and the Sandy Point Beach Bar are the options to take. The rooftop lounge gives you a gorgeous panoramic view of the sea and sky; perfect for watching the sunsets of Mactan. They’ve got bar chow, refreshing mocktails, and signature cocktails. It’s the kind of spot where you can de-stress, toast to the weekend, or just chesmes with friends after a full day of swimming.

The Verdict

We’re definitely going back—no questions asked. It was a weekend well spent, and one that honestly felt like a breath of fresh air. Solea Mactan Resort nails that sweet spot between luxury and accessibility. You don’t need a plane ticket or a passport to feel like you’ve escaped the city; just a quick drive and you’re suddenly in a place that has it all. From their spacious pools and comfy rooms to the great food and stunning sea views, this resort really delivers the sulit experience. It’s no wonder it’s a favorite among both locals and tourists. Solea’s got your back, without breaking the bank, Sugboanons!

Peak-a-Boo: Osmeña’s Morning Glow-Up

Glow up your morning with Cebu’s most scenic wake-up call.

A peak where it’s more than an eye full and has a unique, beautiful scenery of its own, Osmeña Peak is Cebu’s highest peak, reaching 1,013 meters above sea level, which claims the title of Cebu’s highest point and one of the must-visit if you are interested in the beauty of the sunrise. The peak is located in Badian but can be easily reached from the starting point in Dalaguete. This natural scenic view draws trekkers and adventurers, offering a view that stretches across places in Bohol, Negros, and the Tañon Strait. Hikers go to lengths on a short but rugged trail just to witness the overlooking landscape that transcends into a great photograph and becomes an encounter with the gift of nature.

The trek can start in Dalaguete, also known as the “Vegetable Basket of Cebu.” The hike is excellent for those seeking an easy to moderate experience, with a summit accessible in under 30 minutes, set in a grassy landscape featuring stone formations that are easy for people, whether first-timers or not. The mountain will turn into a golden light that contrasts with the sky while the nearby ocean shimmers in the distance. The scent of the mountain grass and the crispness of the air create a peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for relaxation or meditation.

Don’t Snooze the Views

Consider starting before sunrise on a weekday to have the best hiking experience. Many travelers depart from the city late at night, arriving in Dalaguete or Moalboal, and then take a habal-habal to the trail’s starting point. Although there are some difficulties on the final hiking trail, it is still manageable for most. However, a guide is still recommended for first-time hikers. At the summit, people take various photos, picnic, camp, or simply enjoy the breathtaking view of the island before the place is lit up by the warm sunlight that strikes the mountain.

How To Get There?

Exact Location: Mantalongon, Dalaguete, Cebu, Philippines

  • By Commute: Make your way to the South Bus Terminal and catch a bus heading to Dalaguete or one that passes through Dalaguete on its way to Bato. The ride typically takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Let the conductor know you’re getting off at the Eskina or corner going to Mantalongon. From there, hop on a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) for a 30- to 40-minute uphill journey to the Mantalongon Market, which serves as the jump-off point to Osmeña Peak. Once there, you can begin the trek to the summit either with a guide or on your own.

By Car: If you’re driving to Osmeña Peak, simply use navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze and set your destination to Mantalongon Market in Dalaguete, Cebu. From Cebu City, take the South Road Properties and follow the main highway heading south toward Dalaguete. Once you reach the town proper, look out for signs or follow directions leading up to Mantalongon. The road becomes narrower and steeper as you ascend, but it’s passable by private vehicles. Upon reaching the market area, you can park nearby and start your short trek to Osmeña Peak.

5 Beautiful Public Beaches in Lapu-Lapu City

Cebu is a sanctuary of many beaches and natural attractions with some of them even being the best in the country. Marigondon and Punta Engaño in Lapu-lapu houses many beaches that belong to both financial spectrums. Regardless whether it is a 5-star resort or just a simple public beach, people frequent these beaches for the same reasons – to explore, appreciate, and share the experience with other people.

Private resorts already get a lot of attention but there are many public beaches tucked in Lapu-Lapu that are also worth the trip. Get your swimwear ready as we dive into 5 public beaches that are worth visiting in Lapu-Lapu.

1. Tonggo Beach

Tonggo beach or also known as “Ka-Tero” is a mini-paradise nestled in Marigondon. The low-hanging cliffs suspended over the shallow azure waters create canopies that provide shade from the sun while soaking in the water.

On the other side of the water is a verdant backdrop made by a couple of shrubs and ferns and a few occasional trees. There are also grasslands that are perfect for pitching tents while waiting for dust – an equally pleasing experience without getting in the water.

There are tents for rent but are only limited so it would be a great idea to bring your own.

NOTE:

  1. You can bring your own tents, tables, and chairs. There is a lot of space for setting up.
  2. There are no guards or staff to watch over your things. Make sure to always have someone keep watch over everyone’s belongings.
  3. Bringing of food and drinks is allowed. Leave no trace and practice CLAYGO (Clean As You Go).

HOW TO GET THERE?

Exact Location: Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu –  1 to 2 hours from the Metro

  • BY CAR (recommended): Navigate with Waze or Google Maps and find your way to Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu. Upon arrival, ask the locals for directions to Tonggo Beach.
  • BY COMMUTE: Ride a 01K Jeepney to Parkmall from SM City or E-mall. In Parkmall, take a MI-04A jeepney going to Tamiya terminal. You can confirm with the jeepney drivers if they are passing by Tamiya terminal. From Tamiya, ride another multicab to Crossing Marigondon. Once there, look for habal-habal drivers and negotiate a ride to Eskina Bluereef or Ocean Pearl. If they’re willing, you can also ask them to just drop you off at the eskina of Tonggo Beach to shorten the distance to walk to the island.

2. Marigondon Public Beach

Despite being a public beach, this is considered as one of the finest public beaches in the Philippines even to the point that it rivals the beauty of the world-famous Boracay.

People frequent the fine white sands and pristine waters of the beach especially on weekends. Aside from being on par with the beauty of 5-star resorts, the coral reefs 300 yards off the beach also make it a hot spot for scuba divers because of its accessibility.

The aquatic flora and fauna thriving in the reef is something worth seeing as well.

Entrance fee: None as of the moment

HOW TO GET THERE?

The Crab Island is already quite popular among the locals of Mactan. But not too many people know about this “hidden paradise” yet. Technically, there’s no entrance fee but there are some residents who might charge a “Tour Guide” fee, and we recommend to avail this as a help to preserve this attraction.

NOTE:
  • You can bring your own tent. Or tables and chairs. There’s no cottage available in the area.
  • No snacks for sale in the area.

This Reef in Alcoy Appears & Disappears with the Tide

Be the reason the reef still thrives, not why it disappears.

Photo from Antig Tingko Beach’s Facebook Page

Tingko Beach in Alcoy reveals a fascinating natural wonder featuring a Mabad-on reef locally known as the Mambaje Reef. The living coral feature on the platform emerges like a flower sprouting during low tide, creating a walkable marine wonderland just meters from the shore. The transformation occurs daily, but it becomes most dramatic during the spring tide when it rises to 200 meters and becomes exposed. This phenomenon made Tingko Beach a favorite among tourists and locals for taking pictures and snorkeling, who match their visit during the tidal hours. At first, it appears as open water during high tide, and it becomes an interconnected series of tidal pools and coral gardens during low tide, offering a rare chance to explore marine life without going deeper into the water.

Fishin’ for Views

The beach itself features picturesque white sand framed by limestone cliffs and coconut palms that surround the island. At the right time, the reefs will reveal a whole show of corals, separated from the shore, and channel crystal waters not deeper than waist level. The natural lagoon biomes are designed for visitors to enjoy and participate in various fun activities. They can wade across to explore much further into the rich ecosystem. The tide features, including brain corals, sea anemones, and schools of tropical fish, remained visible in the glassy water, while sea urchins and starfish clung to the surface of the reef. The shallow depth of the sea makes it an ideal activity for novice snorkelers, who can fully immerse themselves in underwater visibility during calm conditions and pleasant weather.

Coral Lineage

The place is deeply rooted in Alcoy’s coastal culture, which was originally part of Barangay Daan Lungsod, formerly known as Mambaje, as this reef served as a navigation marker and fishing ground for generations of local fishermen. The municipal government now promotes Mabad-on reefs as a flagship attraction to promote ecotourism. Some locals share stories about the place, explaining how, before it was extended too far into the sea, it gradually retreated, which changed coastal currents over decades. It represents one of Alcoy’s last thriving nearshore corals, as it survives despite the pressures from climate change.

Look, Don’t Touch

To have a better experience during your visit, plan it for the early morning low tides. The local tourism office provides more accurate and up-to-date information, and hiring local guides can help you find the perfect spot for the most vibrant part of the section. The property offers basic amenities, including cottages, restrooms, and eateries located on the beachfront, where fresh seafood is available from local vendors. The weekends draw a much larger crowd, and the reef’s size ensures there are different contemplation corners for various scenes. Following the shore and adhering to tourism rules and regulations is encouraged, as visitors should be mindful of their surroundings and avoid stepping on and collecting the reefs, which helps improve, rather than destroy, marine life. The Alcoy Marine Sanctuary offers a range of activities to enjoy, not just for sightseeing but also for those who want to extend their experience.

How To Get There?

Exact Location: Alcoy, Cebu, Philippines

  • By Car: The most direct route is to drive south via the Natalio Bacalso National Highway, which leads straight through scenic coastal towns like Sibonga and Boljoon. The entire trip typically takes about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. You can use navigation apps such as Google Maps or Waze by typing in “Tingko Beach, Alcoy” as your destination. Parking is available near the beachfront, especially on weekdays when the area is less crowded.
  • By Commute: hop on a southbound bus from the Ceres Terminal in Carcar that’s headed toward Oslob or Santander, just make sure it passes Alcoy. The bus ride usually takes a bit over an hour, and you can simply tell the conductor to drop you off at Tingko Beach in Barangay Daan Lungsod. From the highway, the beach is just a short walk away. To catch the reef at its best, aim to arrive early in the morning during low tide, and consider checking in with the local tourism office for tide schedules and area updates.

Mabad-on Reef stands as one of the most timeless natural masterpieces and an ecological treasure. Its daily appearance and disappearance mark a sway between the land and the sea. It also serves as a learning place to gain a deeper understanding of this unique phenomenon occurring in tidal ecosystems, as it is more than just a sightseeing spot that can only feed our eyes but also our minds. The Tingko beach offers much more, but it is also a reminder of the beauty of the planet’s rhythm and a call to preserve this place for future generations to come.

Steam and Serenity: Finding Peace at Mainit Hot Springs, Cebu

Want a break from the City? Well this hot spring is calling your name!

Photo from Claire Agraviador

Locals in Malabuyoc, Cebu, refer to the Little Kawasan as a secret spring because of its tranquil, wooded surroundings and turquoise waters. However, keep in mind that it is not formally known as “Little Kawasan” because it is only a comparison based on its likeness to the well-known, if smaller, Kawasan Falls in Badian.

The Hot Spring in Question

In Filipino, “mainit” means “hot,” and this spring certainly lives up to the description. Nestled beside the Montañeza River, this group of four geothermal pools has temperatures between 35.8°C and 42.6°C. While the colder pools are ideal for full-body immersion, the hotter ones are frequently utilized for foot soaks. Although it serves a distinct function, the Mainit hot spring’s thermal waters provide a soothing spa experience in the middle of a forest.

Benefits of the Hot Springs

The heat from the hot spring comes from volcanic rocks and fault lines linked to Negros Oriental. The water contains sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and potassium where it sases muscle and joint pain, soothes skin conditions like eczema and promotes blood circulation and relaxation.

The Enchanting Layout

The hot spring has 4 pools and is arranged in tiers beside the river, hence the comparison to the Kawasan Falls. It is surrounded by bamboo forests, coconut palms, and a limestone cliff backdrop, and the artificial pools are constructed out of stone and concrete right into the riverbed. A hot-cold plunge experience is made possible by the hot spring water flowing into the chilly Montañeza River. The first two pools you’ll encounter are the hottest so you better test the water before entering. The lower pools are more comfortable and often shaded. The riverbank is rocky but shallow which is perfect for cooling off between soaks.

Tell Tales about the Hot Springs

Locals say that before Mainit Hot Springs became what it is today, some engkantos lived there. These are mythical creatures that are often referred to as elves or fairies.
