We Filipinos really love our beauty pageants; when our very own beautiful ladies get recognized worldwide in events like Miss Universe, many of us would even skip work just to watch the whole event. Indeed, it is a beloved tradition that we have adored because of its charm.
The beauty pageants are not only about the individual beauty of each contestant. Even wits are important. When it comes to costumes, there must be a balance between aesthetics and cultural relevance.
Today, we take a look at some of the Cebuana beauty queens and their costumes, as their costumes have actually trended for many reasons. All of these costumes are related to the culture of where they hail from, so let us explore what they can potentially mean and learn some culture.
Note that these are the interpretations of the author and not the actual definition as intended by the creator, however that is the beauty of art: it is free to the interpretation and the imagination of the audience. So, if you have a different interpretation, feel free to comment down below.
Megan Campbell (Miss World Philippines, Lapu-Lapu City)
Miss World Philippines Lapu-Lapu City Representative Megan Campbell dons her fierce and bold national costume that symbolizes the Oponganon courage and triumph. Her costume resembles that of a brave warrior fighting for Datu Lapu-Lapu during Magellan’s arrival. She wields with her a sword and a shield that resembles the ancient weapons used in warfare.

Tracy Perez (Miss World Philippines, Cebu City)
Representing Cebu City in the Miss World Philippines, Tracy Perez actually got into the Top 10 Costumes. Dubbed as the “Vessel of Faith”, it represents Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival unto the shores of Cebu, and along with them the Christian religion which dominated the nation. The hat is shaped like a carrack ship which the Spanish used during voyages, and the outfit’s fashion is similar to that of Spanish royalty.
Another representative of Lapu-Lapu City, yet on the Miss Philippines Earth 2021 stage, Claire Codilla dons traditional clothes adorned with beads hanging down. Her outfit, especially the crown, resembles that of the Visayan Goddess of the Eastern Skies Alunsina. Another close resemblance to the outfit is comparable to that of Southeast Asian dancers such as Cambodia, Thailand, etc.
Proudly flaunting the blue-themed attire, Charissa Rama represents Moalboal, Cebu in Miss Philippines Earth 2021. Moalboal is known for being one of the most sought-out tourist spots in Cebu for having luscious blue waters with rich biodiversity. It is home to many of Earth’s finest attractions, such as the sardine run. Thus, picking blue to represent the waters of Moalboal is fitting.

Mia Jane Salisbury (Miss Philippines Earth, Talisay City)
A vibrant yellow hits your eyes as Mia Jane Salisbury, the representative of Talisay City for Miss Philippines Earth 2021, dons her attire. It could possibly represent the sun, which is very fitting and a nice contrast to the picture, since the background has gloomy clouds. This makes the young and beautiful maiden shine in the picture.

There are plenty other representatives that we did not tackle in this article, such as Kheshen Babatid representing San Fernando and Esperanza Mina representing Mandaue City in Miss Philippines Earth 2021, and so much more. We leave that to you, dear readers. What do you think about the outfits?

On Friday, July 16, 2021, bikers were given the chance to bike at the South Road Properties in Cebu City.
After the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar and officials of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) inaugurated the 2.4km bike lane, biking enthusiasts would not need to compete with big trucks and other vehicles on the road for they already have their own.

DOTr Secretary Art Tugade, in a video message, during the launching, said that DPWH in partnership with other government agencies have completed a total of 497 kilometers of bike lanes in Metro Manila, Metro Davao, and Metro Cebu.
This 2.4km bike lane is part of the initiative of the national government called the Metro Cebu Bike Lane Network.
“Indeed, for us at the DOTr, road safety is paramount. Kaya nga ‘ho sa kasagsagan ng pandemya, pinilit at pinipilit po naming tapusin ang mga quality at safe dedicated bike lanes. Dahilan dito, may kumpiyansa ang ating mga siklista at pedestrians, may disiplina ang ating motorista at higit sa lahat may pagbabago mula sa nakagawiang sistema sa daan,” Tugade added.
According to Cebu City councilor Gerardo “Gerry” Carillo, this bike lane starts from the Cebu South Coastal Road in Talisay and ends at the SRP viaduct.

Carillo reminded everyone that this lane is intended for cyclists, bikers, and joggers only. For cyclists, a minimum of 20km/hr is advised. Furthermore, this should also serve as a reminder to not abuse this bike lane by performing stunts and/or exhibitions. After all, we are all after everyone’s safety.

Leading developer in VisMin Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI) strengthens its hotel portfolio in the region as it reveals its very first resort development – the P2.5 billion Abaca Resort Mactan. The expanded luxury boutique hotel is set to be completed in 2024.
The 125-room all-suite accommodation featuring exclusively panoramic ocean views is envisioned to fill the gap for luxury resorts catering to global travelers in Cebu’s thriving tourism scene in preparation for international mobility. It will rise 17-stories high on a 4,500 sqm. property formerly occupied by the multi-awarded Abaca Boutique Resort in Punta Engano, Lapu-Lapu City, a tourism growth center.
CLI purchased the property in 2019 and has signed up The Abaca Group to continue operating the hotel and providing luxury experiences tailored for local and global tourists. To design the resort and infuse it with a unique sense of place sought by an emerging breed of high-end travelers, CLI tapped internationally renowned architectural firm Büro Ole Scheeren whose projects won numerous awards globally. Some of their notable work are CTBUH Urban Habitat Award 2020 Winner DUO in Singapore, the World Building of the Year 2015 The Interlace in Singapore, and MahaNakhon Tower in Bangkok, a mixed-use high-rise development that upends the conventional typology of the skyscraper. The resort’s design is also locally supported by the Philippines’ leading architectural firm AIDEA.
Abaca Resort Mactan is CLI’s first resort development and will feature a timeless Sky Villas concept to serve as the platform for memorable getaways. Each room will offer the luxury of space and will range from 40-50 sqm for the Oceanfront Suites, and up to 105 sqm for the Sky Villas which will have its own one-of-a-kind floating infinity pools that will be offered in both 1 and 2 bedrooms.
Aside from its awe-inspiring architecture, the resort will feature a luxurious infinity pool, an elevated cascading plunge pool, 360-degree roofdeck bar, a private beach and panoramic ocean views. These will be enhanced by a gym and spa, kids center and function rooms for events.
Abaca Resort Mactan will also be distinguished by culinary offerings that have won for The Abaca Group a loyal following in highly cosmopolitan Cebu. The resort will have three outlets, offering new food and beverage concepts for the resort – a live-fire Asian concept on the main level, a new normal, all-day dining format and fantastic banquet facilities that can seat over 200 persons. Abaca restaurant will return and have a new home on the impressive rooftop with panoramic views of both the city and the sea.
“We have always wanted to contribute towards making Cebu a thriving economic and tourism destination,” according to CLI chairman and CEO Jose Soberano III. “Abaca Resort Mactan will put Cebu on the radar of this emerging breed of global travelers seeking world-class, authentic and unique holiday experience.”
The Abaca Group’s Founder, Managing Partner and Executive Chef Jason Hyatt says, “as one of the country’s preeminent developers, we are honored that CLI has chosen to partner with us once again through their hospitality arm. Being added to their portfolio of established global brands like Accor, Radisson and Ascott is so inspiring.”
Following the opening of the new Abaca Resort Mactan in 2024, Cebu Landmasters targets expanding its hotel portfolio to 1,433 rooms by 2025. This is in line with CLI’s strategy to build-up its recurring business contributing 10% to the company’s topline.
“We see tourism in the Visayas and Mindanao driving the economy once global mobility is restored,” according to Soberano. With direct flight connections all over the world, Cebu will be the natural gateway to the Philippines for many travelers seeking to enjoy the country’s world-acclaimed beaches and other attractions. “We will be ready for that boom.”
