Nag Launch na ang Bagong Crypto ICO ‘Bitcoin ETF Token” – Ano ba ang BTCETF?

0

The Sugboanon: This Animal Shelter Shines Hope to Neglected Animals in Cebu

According to a Native American Proverb, “We must be kind to everything that lives,” including our furry friends.

However, the sad reality is not all are kind to our four-legged companions. Here’s a little hard pill to swallow: in the Philippines, animal neglect and abuse are normalized.

Countless cases of abandonment and animal cruelty are shaking communities, which is why there is a need for civilians and organizations to step up and become the unsung heroes of animals— one of them being the Mayari Animal Rescue Organization, Inc. or MARO.

Lending a Helping Paw Since 2012

The Mayari Animal Rescue Organization was founded by Joene Omega, Joey Brunet, and Dan Vetter in 2012. How did it all start? Well, it all started with a dog named Agwa.

According to Joene Omega, she and her twin sister started as volunteers for another animal rescue organization. During the Ironman race in Cebu, many dogs were captured and impounded due to the race’s tight security.

Moreover, at that same time, Joene and her sister saw a Facebook post about a dog named Agwa that was sent to the pound after being rescued from being trapped in a house after the owner abandoned her. Joene recalls how it was a rainy day, and they only intended to feed and rescue Agwa. However, when they got to the pound, they saw other dogs.

“We couldn’t just go there, feed and rescue another dog, and leave the rest behind.”

Joene Omega.

And thus, that encounter with Agwa led to the establishment of MARO. Joene, Joey, and Dan Vetter, wanted to register their own animal welfare organization. The twins and Dan were then joined by Ian Derbyshire later on.

Their organization name came from Mayari, the Filipino Goddess of the Moon and the Guardian of Animals. They wanted something nature-based that would fit perfectly with their mission and goals.

What sets team MARO apart is that they also lead by example as they take their love for animals to heart. The founders are Vegan and Vegetarian, respectively.

“If you want to influence other people. It would be better to influence them through actions. show that you are dedicated, not just in words.”.

Joene Omega

MARO’s mission is to prevent cruelty and needless suffering of animals and to rehabilitate and re-home abused and neglected animals. The shelter focuses on the treatment and recovery of animals in dire need of help, especially those injured.

Furthermore, the organization supports birth and disease control and educates the public about being responsible pet owners to avoid abandonment. Not only that but MARO advocates for the development and enforcement of humane and effective animal welfare laws such as the Republic Act 8485 or the Philippine Animal Welfare Act of 1998, amended by RA10631, which is centered on the protection and getting justice for animals.

Most Memorable Rescues

MARO has met, sheltered, and provided new homes for many animals. They have also experienced loss and pain. However, their mission to help never stops.

Aside from Agwa’s rescue, Mr. Dan Vetter recounts rescues relating to dogs who are all skin and bones, show such a fighter attitude, and recover in just a few weeks. He also shared about animals who were victims of running vehicles that miraculously made a fast recovery. One was Tuna Cat in 2012, who had a broken hip. There was also a pregnant Mama cat with dislocated hip joints.

All these animals were tended to and were given a new chance at life.

Animal Rescue in the Philippines: A Battle Going Uphill

According to Joene, being an animal rescuer in the Philippines is an uphill battle. This is because animal abuse is rampant in the country. The more dogs get abandoned, the more shelters fill up with animals.

MARO has been operating independently in Bohol and two locations in Cebu. With a total of 198 animals, operating is not without financial challenges. Food, supplies, and volunteers have always been the shelter’s hardships. And to add to that are the vet bills for animals who need medical attention.

But you can help turn their situation around. MARO has a fundraiser on their Facebook page to raise money for the shelter necessities. To make an animal smile today, you may donate in-kind or through monetary help.

Planning to Adopt? Here’s what you need to know

People might think that adopting is as easy as picking up your new adoptive pet. However, MARO ensures all their shelter animals are given a good home.

There is a lengthy and meticulous process to determine whether those looking to adopt are suitable candidates.

  1. Interested adoptive owners should visit the shelter, meet the animals, and establish a positive impression.
  2. A questionnaire with educational content will be given to candidates to know the cost and effort of a pet.
  3. Background checks should be expected, such as providing photos of the place where the pet will call home.
  4. There is a P1000 partial reimbursement for the expenses. The rescues are all spayed/neutered vaccinated, and dogs get heartworm prevention monthly. All rescues are also scheduled to be dewormed monthly.

A Future Where Animal Shelters No Longer Exist

MARO and other animal rescue shelters only want one thing: to cease to exist.

They exist because hundreds of animals are abandoned and abused every day. The real fulfillment is to help all animals find a loving home and educate pet owners to be responsible. That way, there won’t be a need for animal rescue centers in the first place.

As civilians, we can always lend the shelter a helping hand, aside from monetary and in-kind donations. If you see an abandoned animal, you can nurse it back to health on your own, provided that you are willing to do so.

Animals deserve care, love, and respect as much as humans do. Let us all do our part to ensure no animal gets left behind. And to animal rescue shelters like MARO, we salute you for your selfless act of making a difference in an animal’s life, one paw at a time.

Kenya Announces Visa-Free Travel Starting 2024

During Kenya’s 60th independence anniversary, President William Ruto declared itself to be a visa-free destination for all citizens from any nation. This is a landscape-defining move as tourists will no longer go through the hassle of processing so many travel requirements. There will be, however, an electronic travel authorization. Even so, this is already so much better than traditional visa applications that require so much.

In his speech on December 18th, President William Ruto said, “Beginning January 2024, Kenya will be a visa-free country. It shall no longer be necessary for any person, from any corner of the globe, to carry the burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya.” This move is done with the goal of becoming a more welcoming country to international travelers, given its accessibility.

Reports show that security will still be paramount even with this change. The online travel authorization will have robust security checks to guarantee both the travelers’ and the nation’s safety. The best part of this service is that it is free of charge. This is both convenient and economically beneficial, especially for tourists on a budget who still want to explore Kenya and witness its diverse landscape and culture.

This transition to a visa-free system leads to a streamlining of the entry process. Kenya’s decision to implement a visa-free system is truly a step forward to an inclusive and travel-friendly system. The nation anticipates the advantages this will give them economically, welcoming everyone around the world to get to know their stunning landscapes and beautifully diverse cultures. Like Shakira said, this time for Africa!

Unlocking Philippine History with NHCP’s National Memory Project

A nation’s history is one of the pillars that hold it to make up what it is today. A lot of things ought never to be forgotten. Launched as a response to the rising demand for a democratized history, the National Memory Project serves as a digital trove of the past. Within its virtual shelves are documents, rare books, and photographs, and documents sourced from the archives, museums, and libraries of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

Through it, we are able to access high-resolution materials regarding our national history online. Users are able to download files as well. Since the year 2020, this has been contributory to preserving the rich history of the country with everyone even beyond our nation serving as their audience.

For materials categorized as copyrighted, the organization guarantees that these are still available for onsite viewing and purchase. If you’re interested, you may do so at the NHCP Serafin D. At a time when misinformation and disinformation are rampant, it is highly important for people to have access to facts. History cannot be altered, nor are there “two different sides”. History may have multiple narratives, but all of these are interwoven within each other to create one single story. The National Memory Project stands as a beacon that illuminates the dark crevices of Philippine history like never before. You should check it out!

Firework Safety Guide for the New Year

As the new year approaches, the anticipation of our celebration to welcome it involving loud noises and visuals through the use of pyrotechnics grows. But with that comes the danger in using these fiery spectacles.

To prevent and treat firework injuries, here’s what you need to know.

Safety Measures and Precautions

Always prepare what is necessary if your family is one who always participates in lighting up something for the new year. Or even if you don’t, it’s still best to be proactive when worse comes to worst.

  • Stock up on the essentials such as a first aid kit with all the necessary equipment and medicine, water, and a fire blanket. Also prepare sterile saline in the case of eye contact with sparks.

  • If you are hosting a home display, make sure to follow the rules and guidelines in your local area and designate a responsible adult to facilitate your firework show. You may google the Fireworks Code in your area to be guided.

  • And of course, to be extra precautionary especially for children, make sure to keep fireworks in a closed metal box to avoid contact.
  • If you’re going to give your children sparklers, make sure that they are supervised and instruct them to do so at a distance from others.

First Aid Tips

  • MINOR BURNS

1. Alleviate the heat of the burn through putting it under running water for at least 20 minutes.

2. Cover the affected area with cling film or a dressing after cooling it with water.

  • EYE INJURIES

1. Make sure to wash your hands or wear sterile gloves before you touch the affected area.

2. Apply sterile saline to the eyes.

3. Seek medical advice afterwards to have better treatment, or in the case of persistent pain or discomfort.

  • LOSS OF LIMB

1. Cover the amputated part and place in a sterile bag or container full of ice.

2. Seek immediate medical attention. Call an ambulance or immediately drive the casualty to the nearest hospital.

  • FIREWORK INGESTION
  1. Seek immediate medical attention. Firework ingestion is highly dangerous and varies from case to case.
  2. List down symptoms of the casualty if there are any while waiting for an ambulance or while on the way to the hospital.
  3. Avoid self-induced vomiting at home. While it is a common treatment to any kind of poisoning, in terms of fireworks, it may cause further harm.
  4. Bring a sample of the firework ingested if possible. This can help healthcare providers examine the toxins involved and treat you more accordingly.

The misuse of fireworks poses serious risks as these things are a double-edged sword. Make sure to be prepared for accidents, and better yet, be careful enough not to let them happen. Supervise children, follow the guidelines in using fireworks, and use them responsibly.

Firework Anxiety in Pets: Tips for a Stress-Free Celebration

We have only a few sleeps until the new year, and by virtue of tradition, fireworks will be taking center stage. The feast to the eyes and the belief of the noise driving away evil spirits make up a wonderful event for us humans, but not so for our furry friends who have no idea what is going on, it just so happens that everyone is all dressed up and there’s so much food on the table. When the fireworks start, pets experience anxiety, fear, and stress because of the deafening noise, and unfamiliar and unpleasant smell of the pyrotechnics. These can trigger various fear responses in animals.

Here is what to do to ensure your pets’ well-being during fireworks.

Keep Your Pets Away From Fireworks

The first most important thing to do for your pet is to make sure they are not directly exposed to the sounds right before they start going off. This means that you have to keep them inside to at least have the walls of your house as a barrier from what’s going on outside, furthermore making them feel safe since they are with the rest of the family. For big animals that have a tendency to be violent to other pets or people inside the house, you may help them through soundproofing their outdoor cages to block noise. If this option isn’t attainable, you may stay with them outside during the fireworks to make them comfortable and let them feel that you are there for them.

Create a Safe Haven

All animals seek comfort in den-like spaces as territorial beings. For cats, you may give them a secure hiding place where they can stay during the festivities, perhaps a box would do. Preparing a calming environment in a quiet area away from the doors and windows will give your pet shelter from everything going outside, and will surely make them feel secure. You may provide familiar toys and treats to calm them down and allow them to feel comfortable even in hiding. Close your windows and your doors, and use blackout curtains to block everything from outside as much as possible.

Play White Noise

Playing white noise can mask the sounds of fireworks outside. You can leave the TV on, or play calming music. There are multiple sounds available online that are proven to have soothing effects for different animals, depending which ones you have. An example of which is “Through a Dog’s Ear” which is known for having calming effects on dogs. Other Classic FM’s pet classics help pets relax during our festivities as well.

Comfort Your Pet

As the owner of your pet, you are the one they trust the most and you have the ability to make them feel as safe as possible. If you’re not going out for the holidays, make sure you stay close to your pets and comfort them. You can talk to them in a soothing tone as this can help alleviate their anxiety. You may also give them pets and strokes while the fireworks are going on.

Talk to Your Vet

Your pet may have firework phobia if their anxiety during fireworks is severe. In this case, you should consult your veterinarian in advance. There are options such as calming treats, anxiety vets, and possible medications to lessen distress. This is treatable, so there is nothing to worry about as long as you take precaution to guarantee your pet’s well-being.

Consider Hiring a Trainer

In the case where the medications and the advice of your veterinarian doesn’t work, you may consider getting the help of a behavior consultant or a professional trainer if this is to your avail. This can develop healthier mental responses within your pets and further help them. If you cannot do so, you may gradually expose your pets to the sounds of fireworks yourself through playing videos of them on your own device. This is to desensitize your pet to fireworks and lessen their anxiety. The method called counter-conditioning can be done through giving your pet treats after or during playing the sounds.

It is important to ensure our pets’ well-being as much as it is for us to have a good time during the holidays. As pet moms and dads, it is our responsibility to keep them comfortable and make sure that they feel safe and secure to make the celebration enjoyable for everyone in the family, especially for our furry family members.
