Panagtipon 2025: A Celebration of Cebuano Theatre

Theatre lovers in Cebu are in for a grand spectacle as the University of Cebu presents Panagtipon: A Festival of Cebuano Theatre.

Taking place from March 19-22 and March 26-29 at the Cebu Coliseum, the festival brings to life Cebu’s vibrant storytelling traditions and rich cultural heritage through original Cebuano plays and translations of well-loved works.

A Gathering of Artistic Excellence

Panagtipon, meaning “gathering” in Cebuano, is a celebration of culture, identity, and artistic expression. 

With a lineup of five straight plays and two musicals, the event aims to foster cultural pride, spark meaningful conversations, and showcase the undeniable talent of Cebuano playwrights, directors, and performers.

Producer Rudy U. Aviles, a long-time advocate for Cebuano theatre, shares his passion for keeping local stories alive: 

“Now in its seventh year, this festival continues to be our tribute to Culture and Arts Month. It is an invaluable opportunity to share Cebuano stories while highlighting the significance of local theatre as a platform for expression and cultural dialogue.”

For larger groups, renting a private pump boat is a great option.

By Car: If you prefer to drive, start your journey from Cebu City by taking the Cebu North Road toward Daanbantayan. The scenic drive typically takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic. Upon reaching Tapilon Port, you can park your car securely before boarding a boat to Carnaza Island.

Known for its pristine waters and abundant marine life, this small coral islet offers a secluded paradise perfect for adventure seekers and nature lovers.

The Origin of Capitancillo Islet

Legend has it that Capitancillo Islet was once a grand Spanish ship captained by Captain Basilio.

His arrogance led to a fateful encounter with a local chieftain, who, angered by the captain’s mockery, cursed the ship and transformed it into a rock formation adrift at sea.

Another version of history attributes the name to an American Navy Captain Cillo, who reportedly beached his vessel on this tranquil islet during World War II.

While these histories remain unconfirmed, one thing is for sure–the present has many more stories to tell.

Once in Bogo Proper, hire a pedicab or tricycle to Brgy. Siocon Bantay Dagat outpost, a journey of approximately 30 minutes. Finally, from the outpost, take a pump boat to Capitancillo Islet, which lasts around 45 minutes.
  • By Car: If traveling by car, drive north from Cebu City via the Cebu North Road, reaching Bogo City in about 3 hours, depending on traffic. From Bogo, continue to Brgy. Siocon Bantay Dagat outpost, which takes an additional 30 minutes. After parking your vehicle, take a pump boat from the outpost to Capitancillo Islet, with the boat ride lasting roughly 45 minutes.

When Oscar arrived at Steere House in 2005, he wasn’t exactly the social butterfly of the feline world. 

He was aloof, preferred solitude, and often sought refuge in supply closets or under beds. Unlike the other therapy cats, he had little interest in receiving affection from residents or staff. But then, something changed.

Oscar began making unexpected visits to certain patients, settling down beside them in bed or sitting by their window. 

What seemed like random feline behavior soon revealed a pattern: within hours of his visits, the residents he chose to spend time with would pass away.

At first, the staff thought it was a coincidence. Once it happened 20, then 30, then over 100 times, they knew Oscar possessed an extraordinary ability. 

So reliable was his sense that when Oscar settled with a patient, the staff would call their family, giving them precious time to say goodbye.

The Explanation Behind the Special Ability

The question that perplexed doctors, researchers, and pet lovers alike was: how did Oscar know when death was near?

Dr. David Dosa, a geriatrician at Steere House, speculated that Oscar might be detecting biochemical changes in the body. As cells begin to break down, they release specific scents that animals with heightened senses–like cats–might be able to perceive.

Similar to how dogs can sniff out cancer, Oscar may have had a keen ability to sense when the body was shutting down.

Others believe there may be a deeper, more intuitive connection at play. Some even likened him to a spiritual guardian, offering solace to those transitioning from life.
