Why Winning Bronze Feels Better Than Silver?

4

As the Paris Olympics end, talks about the winners continue circulating, including their feelings and emotions after receiving an award.

One of the striking observations that arose was the contrast in the emotional reactions of bronze and silver medal winners. While bronze medalists often show a sense of joy and satisfaction, silver medalists can sometimes appear disappointed. This phenomenon is not unique to the Olympics but is a common occurrence in any competition where there are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The question that naturally arises is, why?

Why Does Being 3rd Feel A Whole Lot Better Than Being 2nd?

Silver Vault Medalist | Photo from the London Olympics 2012

According to netizens, “Being 3rd means that one’s efforts made him win the competition, but placing 2nd means that that person is the first loser.” Although a tad bit negative to the silver or 2nd place winners, this statement has some truths laced in it.

It’s a common scenario for silver medalists, who often find themselves just a point or less away from the gold. In such cases, it’s easy to fall into the ‘if only trap,” thinking about what could have been. This can sometimes overshadow the achievement, whereas bronze medalists are more likely to embrace the satisfaction of their win.

How to Overcome Negative Thoughts When You’re the 2nd Placer

Photo and Screengrab from Spencer Lee’s Social Media

Competing is already a play on one’s physical and mental capacities, especially when you’re among the top competitors. However, when dealing with the tough “if onlys,” it’s best to incorporate and remind yourself about the spirit of sportsmanship. Offer goodwill to your fellow competitors and yourself, especially since you are your most challenging competitor. Celebrate the fact that you won in a highly competitive environment and embrace or bask in the glory of your win.

Photo from the Paris Olympics 2024

Lastly, always remember that you can do better, maybe not in the current set of competitions, but in the future. Just compete with yourself and you’ll find that regardless of your placement or award, you’ll be generally happier and satisfied as compared to comparing yourself with others.

The Debt of Gratitude: Should Children Give Back to Their Parents?

“Utang na loob? We didn’t ask to be born!” said one netizen.

Screengrab from ABS-CBN

From the moment we’re born, our parents are our biggest supporters. They care for us, work hard, and love us unconditionally. As we grow up and start our lives, a common question arises: Should children give back to their parents?

Photo from Carlos Yulo’s Instagram

Why Giving Back Matters

Photo from Canva

Showing Appreciation

Our parents work hard to give us everything we need. They make sacrifices and offer support in countless ways. As we become adults, giving back is a way to say “thank you” for all their efforts. It’s a heartfelt way to show that we recognize and value everything they’ve done for us.

Making Strong Relationships

When we give back, it helps strengthen our relationship with our parents. Spending quality time with them, helping around the house, or offering emotional support can make a big difference. It shows that we care and appreciate them, bringing us closer together.

Returning the Love we Owe

Parents give us love and support throughout our lives. As we grow up, we have the chance to return that love. This could mean helping them with daily tasks, being there for them when they need us, or spending time with them. It’s a beautiful way to show that we value their love and care.

Supporting Them Till They Get OLD

As parents age, they might need more help. This is when giving back becomes especially important. Helping with household chores and medical appointments or simply being there for them can make their lives easier. It’s a way to repay them for their years of caring for us.

VERDICT: It Depends on the Situation

Photo from Canva

It’s important to remember that giving back also depends on the situation. If our parents have always been supportive and loving, giving back is a natural and meaningful way to show our appreciation. But if they haven’t been there for us or have not shown us the love we need, we might need to think carefully about how and if we should give back.

Every family situation is different, and it is okay to make decisions based on what feels suitable for you and your parents.

Yes, we didn’t ask to be born; giving back to our parents is a way to show our gratitude for all they’ve done for us. It’s not just about fulfilling a duty; it’s about recognizing their sacrifices and expressing our thanks by supporting them, spending time with them, and helping them as they age. Every act of kindness and love we show our parents deepen our connection with them and honor their role in our lives. It’s a meaningful way to say “thank you” and ensure our family stays tight and caring throughout our lives.

#JobHunting: How Long Should Your Resume Be?

Whether you’re hunting for a new job, seeking an internship, or exploring other professional opportunities, crafting a well-written resume is important. But one question that often comes up is: How long should your resume be?

Photo from Canva

Well, the answer can differ based on your experience and the role you’re targeting. But, here’s a guide for you to determine the ideal length for your resume.

The One-Page Rule

Photo from Canva

For interns, first-time job seekers, or those who are still early in their careers, a one-page resume is highly recommended. The concise format allows you to indicate only your highlights, which are what an HR would look for; making every piece of information in your resume impactful.

Two Pages for More Experienced Folks

Photo from Canva

You can add an additional page if you are someone with tons of experiences relevant to the job that you’re applying for. So, when you consider having a 2-page resume, it’s best for you to elaborate on your accomplishments, work history, and certifications you received.

If you have several years of experience, a two-page resume is acceptable and often necessary.

Tip: Customize Your Resume

Photo from Canva

Considering the length of your resume may be crucial, but nothing is more important than having a customized resume! So, make sure that you incorporate all the necessary keywords that fits the job description and always highlight your relevant experiences. Of course, don’t forget to design your resume in a professional manner, or if you’re in the creative field, then show your talent by having a uniquely designed document that’s still readable, has clear headings, and with a consistent layout.

Above all, always remember that the goal of your resume is to capture the interest of recruiters and hiring managers, so keep it concise, relevant, and impactful to make the best impression, Sugboanons!

Dengue Safety; Because Prevention Is Better Than Cure

0

Dengue fever is a serious illness spread by mosquitoes, but you can take simple steps to protect yourself and your family; here’s how:

Eliminate Stagnant Water

Photo from Canva

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water. Regularly check and clean containers like buckets, flower pots, and old tires that can collect water. By getting rid of these breeding sites, you can significantly reduce mosquito populations around your home.

Use Mosquito Repellents

Photo from Canva

Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin and clothing. This helps keep mosquitoes away and lowers your risk of getting bitten.

Wear Protective Clothing

Photo from Canva

When possible, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks to minimize exposed skin. This makes it harder for mosquitoes to bite you.

Install Screens

Photo from Canva

Fit screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. This simple barrier can help keep these pests out and reduce your chances of getting bitten indoors.

Sleep Under a Mosquito Net

Photo from Canva

If you live in or are visiting an area with a high risk of dengue, use a mosquito net while sleeping. This is particularly important in areas where mosquitoes are more active at night.

Maintain Cleanliness

Photo from Canva

Regularly clean your surroundings and remove potential mosquito breeding sites. This includes emptying and cleaning anything that can hold water.

Participate in Community Efforts

Join local clean-up drives and support community mosquito control programs. Working together can help reduce the number of breeding sites and protect everyone in the community.

By following these tips, you can greatly reduce your risk of dengue fever and help create a safer environment for everyone.

The Golden Boy: Carlos Yulo’s Journey to Grabbing Two Gold Olympic Medals

Congratulations, Caloy!

Carlos Edriel Yulo, a remarkable gymnast from Manila, has marked his name in history as the first Filipino to win two gold medals at the Paris Olympics 2024. His story is not just about his incredible achievements but also about the dreams, hard work, and passionate heart that defined his journey.

The Observer Becomes The Athlete

Photo from Carlos Edriel Yulo’s Instagram

Carlos Yulo’s journey to becoming an Olympic champion began in the bustling city of Manila. Born on February 16, 2000, he showed an early passion for gymnastics. He loved the sport since he was a young lad and would watch other gymnasts train to compete at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

At seven years old, his grandfather, Rodrigo Frisco, saw him practicing flips at a playground. This hobby of Carlos became the turning point of his life when his Grandpa decided to take him to the Gymnastic Association of the Philippines (GAP) to undergo a formal training. And all those training hours paid off when he joined the National Capital Region’s gymnastic team.

In 2008 he joined his first big event, the Palarong Pambansa; and by 2010, he started bringing home gold medals in the individual all-around and floor exercise competitions.

Gaining International Recognition

When 2018 came, he made history by winning a bronze medal at the World Championships, marking his name as the Philippines first medalist in the event.
