Filipinos are people who value faith and devotion like no other.
It is finally the Lenten season, and people, especially devotees, are observing a time of reverence and sacrifice. Lenten Season is celebrated differently worldwide; even the Philippines has its own way of celebrating.
Let’s talk about the various activities that Filipinos observe during Lent.
1. Daan ng Krus
Photo from Unsplash
Daan ng Krus, or the “Way of the Cross,” is done every Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent. The Way of the cross highlights the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
2. Viernes Dolores
Photo from Unsplash
Viernes Dolores is one of the oldest devotions to the Mater Dolorosa. On the Sixth Friday of Lent, women wearing black dresses and veils pray the rosary. They also recite verses of the Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows.
In other places in the Philippines, Viernes Dolores is celebrated with a procession of Mary. The image of Mary contains a heart pierced with seven swords. Moreover, the seven swords depict Mary’s seven sorrows.
3. Senakulo
Photo from Unsplash
The Senakulo is a street play about the Passion of Christ. The event usually takes place in Bulacan, Rizal, and Pampanga. Senakulo depicts the violence Jesus experienced from his persecutors.
4. Linggo ng Palaspas

If you are Catholic, you might have palaspas in your house. The palaspas, or woven coconut leaves, signify the palm and olive branches waved when Jesus arrived at Jerusalem.
5. Prusisyon

During Lenten Season, different processions take place. These processions are often done during Holy Week. During Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday, the procession of the Way to Calvary is done.
During the Way to Calvary, the image of the Fallen Chris is accompanied by the saints who were there when Jesus walked to his death.
6. Visita Iglesia
Antipolo Church, P. Oliveros Street, Padilla, Antipolo, Rizal, Philippin | Photo from Unsplash
Visita Iglesia is the act of visiting seven churches. During Visita Iglesia, the Way of the Cross is prayed on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. It is known as one of the most common way to remember the Passion of Christ.
7. Penitencia
Penitencia is a penance where participants beat their bodies through lashing and self-inflicted flagellation. The participants are bare up to the waist. Their faces are covered with hoods, and they wear crowns made of leaves.
The penitents start praying at a cemetery and initially wound themselves.
8. Paglilibing
Photo from Ma. Belen Bermachea YouTube Channel
The Paglilibing is one of the longest processions during Holy Week. During this time, an image of the Dead Christ is situated in a casket. The Paglilibing is observed on Good Friday after the Lord’s Passion and Veneration of the Cross.
9. Abstinence and Fasting
Photo from Unsplash
Another way to celebrate Lent is Abstinence and Fasting. Fasting is when individuals eat one complete meal and two smaller meals. People exempted from fasting are those who are sick, pregnant, and those who work extensively.
On the other hand, abstinence is the act of “doing without.” For example, observing abstinence means abstaining from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent.
These are only some of the things that Filipinos observe during the Lenten Season. In addition, of course, each part of the Philippines may have its unique way of celebrating. But, despite the differences, Catholics still have one goal, which is to remember the sacrifices of Christ.
Holy Week is fast approaching, and with it comes the most-awaited “long weekend” for students and everyone, especially us Sugboanons. So, if you plan on taking a week off work and spending the Lenten Season reflecting and unwinding simultaneously while staying within the city limits, this list is for you!
Temple of Leah
The Temple of Leah, with its awe-inspiring architecture reminiscent of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, holds a unique and heartwarming story. It gained widespread attention when the tale of its creation was shared with visitors, revealing a man’s enduring love and devotion to his departed wife. This narrative of love and loss infuses the entire place with a palpable sense of romance, inviting you to step into their story.

Easter Sunday in Cebu isn’t just about easter eggs or family feasts. Beyond these festivities, it is also one beloved tradition that Cebuanos eagerly look forward to: Padagat.
Photo from Joey Argawanon
This seaside tradition, deeply rooted in faith and festivity, is one of the most popular ways for families and barkadas to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ.
Photos from Kurdapya Kho
But what exactly is Padagat, and where can you experience the best one this Easter? Read on!
What Is Padagat?
In Cebuano, Padagatmeans “to go to the sea.” It’s a post-Lenten tradition celebrated on Easter Sunday where families and groups head to beaches, coastlines, and island resorts to unwind after the solemnity of the Holy Week.
Photos from Nico Tarife
It’s both a spiritual and social celebration, symbolizing renewal and the joy of Christ’s resurrection. This practice is especially vibrant in Cebu, where coastal culture and faith are deeply intertwined.

Many believe that taking a dip in the sea on Easter Sunday is both a panata(vow) and a pahulay(rest) after the sacrifices of Lent.
A Bit of History
The tradition of Padagat dates back decades and is often passed down through generations.
Photo from Unsplash
In older times, after a week of mourning and reflection, Easter Sunday served as a joyous celebration. This is highlighted by the Sugat–the pre-dawn re-enactment of the meeting between the risen Christ and the Virgin Mary.
Right after the Sugat mass, families would pack food, ride their motorbikes or jeepneys, and flock to nearby beaches for the rest of the day.

The Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, located 5 kilometers east of Mactan Island, is a critical refuge for migratory birds from as far as Siberia, Japan, and Northern China.
Comprising the main island of Olango and six smaller islets, Sulpa, Gilutongan, Nalusuan, Caohagan, Pangan-an, and Camungi, the sanctuary covers approximately one thousand hectares of protected wetlands, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests.
This medium-sized heron, known for its striking rufous and gray plumage, is a nocturnal hunter often seen perched silently in the mangroves during the day. As dusk falls, it emerges to hunt small fish, amphibians, crabs, and aquatic insects along the mudflats and shallow waters of Olango.
The Rufous Night-Heron plays a crucial role in the sanctuary’s ecosystem, controlling populations of small aquatic creatures and maintaining the ecological balance.
Visitors with keen eyes may spot this elusive bird lurking in the shadows of the mangroves or wading stealthily through the shallows in search of prey. Birdwatchers are encouraged to use binoculars or the spotting scope at the observation deck to catch a glimpse of this magnificent species.
Birdwatching and Conservation
The Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is home to 97 bird species, 48 of which are migratory.
Photo from Mr. Rubert Martinez of the DENR7 Regional Office
Every year, from September to May, particularly between November and February, approximately 40,000 migratory birds stop here to refuel before continuing their journey south. The best time for birdwatching is at least two hours before high tide.
Photo from Pinterest
Birds use the sanctuary’s mudflats, sandbars, and mangrove forests for feeding, roosting, and nesting. Expert guides provide detailed insights into the birds’ migratory and hunting patterns, deepening visitors’ understanding of the delicate ecological balance.
A long concrete pathway leads visitors to the main feeding area, offering panoramic views of the immense sand flats. The sanctuary’s observation deck, though weathered, provides a vantage point for spotting birds.
Photo from Pinterest
A spotting scope is available for close-up views of the avian visitors in their natural habitat.
Conservation Efforts and Activities
The Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is under the jurisdiction of Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova. It was declared a protected area by President Corazon Aquino in 1992 under Proclamation 903. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining the sanctuary’s ecological integrity while balancing tourism and local livelihoods.
Visitors can engage in various activities, including birdwatching, swimming, camping, sightseeing, and diving.
Photo from Unsplash
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) continues to monitor and protect the sanctuary, ensuring that both locals and tourists contribute to its preservation.
Supporting conservation efforts through responsible tourism will help maintain Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary as a thriving haven for birds and marine life for generations to come.
So, the next time you see a Rufous Night-Heron out in the wild, be mindful and keep watching from afar!

The start of the 2025 season was dominated by three teams — Tundra, Spirit, and Liquid. These teams won all four major tournaments of the year. Tundra had a particularly impressive start, taking the title twice and reaching the finals twice more. Will this powerful trio manage to continue their hegemony in the ESL One Raleigh 2025? In this article, 1xBet esports experts will reveal everything you need to know about the upcoming tournament.
ESL One Raleigh 2025 format and prize money
The last time the ESL One series of tournaments was held in the United States was in 2015 in New York City. ESL One Los Angeles 2020 was canceled due to a pandemic, and only now the series returns to North America. However, this time the organizers from ESL, with the support of official sponsor 1xBet, decided to hold the tournament not in a major metropolis, but in Raleigh — the capital of the North Carolina state.
The ESL One Raleigh 2025 tournament will be hosted at the Raleigh Convention Center from April 7 to 13, 2025, with only two stages — group stage and playoffs. The total prize pool for the tournament is $1,000,000, which will be distributed as follows:
1 place: $250,000 Player Prize + $40,000 Club Reward
2 place: $130,000 Player Prize + $35,000 Club Reward
3 place: $100,000 Player Prize + $27,500 Club Reward
4 place: $70,000 Player Prize + $22,500 Club Reward
5-6 places: $40,000 Player Prize + $20,000 Club Reward
7-8 places: $25,000 Player Prize + $17,500 Club Reward
9-10 places: $20,000 Player Prize + $15,000 Club Reward
11-12 places: $15,000 Player Prize + $10,000 Club Reward
In the tournament’s first stage, 12 teams will be divided into two groups, and each participant will play five matches consisting of two games. The top two teams from each group will advance to the upper bracket of the playoff, the 3rd and 4th place teams will move to the lower bracket of the playoffs, and the two worst teams will leave the tournament. The final matches will take place from April 10 to 13 under the double-elimination scheme, and in the grand finals, the teams will compete in the Bo5 format.
In addition to the prize money, the teams will receive 27,920 EPT Points, which will help them qualify for the Esports World Cup 2025 summer tournament, known for its massive prize pool. For example, last yearєs tournament featured a $5,000,000 prize pool in Dota 2 alone, with the winners of Gaimin Gladiators earning $1,500,000. By the way, the 1xBet Supernova tournament in the esports discipline Mobile Legends was held around the same period, and the team from the Philippines, Falcons AP.Bren, celebrated its victory.
ESL One Raleigh 2025 participants and favorites
Only four of the 12 entrants in the tournament received direct invites thanks to the EPT Leaderboard: PARIVISION, BetBoom, Falcons, and Liquid. The remaining eight spots went to the winners of the regional qualifiers:
Western Europe: Tundra Esports and AVULUS
Eastern Europe: Team Spirit
MESWA: Nigma Galaxy
China: Team Tidebound
Southeast Asia: Talon Esports
North America: Shopify Rebellion
South America: HEROIC
During the qualifiers, some teams used the banned Smoke of Deceit bug, which allowed them to explore their opponents’ inventory by dragging and dropping Smoke of Deceit. Because of this, NAVI Junior was disqualified and gave its slot to the AVULUS team at the tournament. However, the Xtreme Gaming team, which won the Chinese qualifier, had another problem — it was unable to assemble a squad and gave its slot to Team Tidebound.
Three teams are the clear favorites in the tournament: Tundra, Spirit, and Liquid. The winner is highly expected to be one of them, although PARIVISION, BetBoom, and Falcons also have chances for victory. 1xBet clients from the Philippines are surely looking forward to the start of the ESL One Raleigh 2025 tournament, as Talon Esports and Shopify Rebellion teams feature four local esports players: Kuku, Natsumi, skem, and Yopaj. As a reminder, the international platform 1xBet is an official partner of ESL One Raleigh 2025 and other esports tournaments, including 1xBet Supernova.

Come From Away
Get ready to cheer, “I’m an islander, I am an islander!” as “COME FROM AWAY” hits Manila this coming June 6 to 29, 2025! Set in the year 2001, the musical is inspired by a sequence of true events in Gander, Newfoundland following the 9/11 attacks. It tells the story of the local community who welcomed the passengers of 38 planes who had to be diverted to their area, approximately 7,000 people! Written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, the musical showcases the life-changing moments and what happens after 10 years, which includes the heartwarming moment about the “plane people” still keeping in touch with the Gander community who hosted them during one of the toughest times in history.

You will be found at the Theater at Solaire as GMG Productions brings “Dear Evan Hansen” to the Philippine stage for the UK Touring Production’s Asian premiere. The musical follows Evan Hansen, a bullied high school student with social anxiety, who finds himself in a predicament as he gets trapped in a story involving Connor, a fellow student who committed suicide. This musical not only addresses mental health and the realities of life but also illustrates how one decision can create a ripple effect that changes many lives. Originally starring Ben Platt, “Dear Evan Hansen” is a powerful emotional musical that moves audiences to tears with its songs, such as “You Will Be Found” and “Requiem.”
