Cebu Eats: Why Cebuanos love the Special Caycay delicacy

0

There is no doubt that Cebuanos are known for their appetite and passion for flavor. This love for food manifests in the local favorites like: the sweet and savory humba, the tasty and flexible bam-i, and most especially, the smoky and scrumptious lechon de cebu.

Of course, there’s a whole lot more to cuisine than just lunch and rice meals. Cebuanos’ passion also extends to dozens of delicacies and snacks! Surely, you’ve met bingka and you’ve heard of torta, but our focus here is a special treat that can be enjoyed anywhere. Tableside, from your bag or your pocket, a light dessert after a hearty meal, this is a delectable delight of a snack that you can have any time.

Enter one of Cebu’s most fun snacks: caycay!

Caycay is a sweet and crunchy snack in the form of a round biscuit. Characteristically known for the crunch it makes while eating, it’s a layered cookie coated in caramelized coconut cream syrup (latik) and rolled in ground toasted peanuts.

When you take a bite of caycay, the initial texture is coarse and dry, but the cookie easily gives after you start chewing. It may be a little dehydrating, but man, is it satisfying to eat!

The cookie itself is usually mildly sweet, with a flavor that is sugary yet not overwhelming. This balance, along with the distinct taste of peanut, makes it a great snack to get rid of the taste of fat and grease (or as we call it, bidli) after a hearty meal.

These crunchy treats are delightfully enjoyable with coffee, tea, juice, or any cold drink you’d like! The dryness adds depth to this delicacy while your drink will keep your mouth from getting too parched.

The ingredients of caycay are simple and fairly common. With an oven and some flour, a bit of milk and butter, water, sugar, and salt, you can make your very own at home! It’s totally the combination and the execution of cooking that makes it so enjoyable.

Go out there and try this light, fluffy, and tasty treat! Caycay can now be bought in packages from supermarkets, pasalubong stores, and online.

Trending Cebuana Beauty Queens’ Costumes and What They Mean

We Filipinos really love our beauty pageants; when our very own beautiful ladies get recognized worldwide in events like Miss Universe, many of us would even skip work just to watch the whole event. Indeed, it is a beloved tradition that we have adored because of its charm.

The beauty pageants are not only about the individual beauty of each contestant. Even wits are important. When it comes to costumes, there must be a balance between aesthetics and cultural relevance.

Today, we take a look at some of the Cebuana beauty queens and their costumes, as their costumes have actually trended for many reasons. All of these costumes are related to the culture of where they hail from, so let us explore what they can potentially mean and learn some culture.

Note that these are the interpretations of the author and not the actual definition as intended by the creator, however that is the beauty of art: it is free to the interpretation and the imagination of the audience. So, if you have a different interpretation, feel free to comment down below.

Megan Campbell (Miss World Philippines, Lapu-Lapu City)

Miss World Philippines Lapu-Lapu City Representative Megan Campbell dons her fierce and bold national costume that symbolizes the Oponganon courage and triumph. Her costume resembles that of a brave warrior fighting for Datu Lapu-Lapu during Magellan’s arrival. She wields with her a sword and a shield that resembles the ancient weapons used in warfare.

Tracy Perez (Miss World Philippines, Cebu City)

Representing Cebu City in the Miss World Philippines, Tracy Perez actually got into the Top 10 Costumes. Dubbed as the “Vessel of Faith”, it represents Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival unto the shores of Cebu, and along with them the Christian religion which dominated the nation. The hat is shaped like a carrack ship which the Spanish used during voyages, and the outfit’s fashion is similar to that of Spanish royalty.

Claire Codilla (Miss Philippines Earth, Lapu-Lapu City)

Another representative of Lapu-Lapu City, yet on the Miss Philippines Earth 2021 stage, Claire Codilla dons traditional clothes adorned with beads hanging down. Her outfit, especially the crown, resembles that of the Visayan Goddess of the Eastern Skies Alunsina. Another close resemblance to the outfit is comparable to that of Southeast Asian dancers such as Cambodia, Thailand, etc.

Charissa Rama (Miss Philippines Earth, Moalboal Cebu)

Proudly flaunting the blue-themed attire, Charissa Rama represents Moalboal, Cebu in Miss Philippines Earth 2021. Moalboal is known for being one of the most sought-out tourist spots in Cebu for having luscious blue waters with rich biodiversity. It is home to many of Earth’s finest attractions, such as the sardine run. Thus, picking blue to represent the waters of Moalboal is fitting.

Mia Jane Salisbury (Miss Philippines Earth, Talisay City)

A vibrant yellow hits your eyes as Mia Jane Salisbury, the representative of Talisay City for Miss Philippines Earth 2021, dons her attire. It could possibly represent the sun, which is very fitting and a nice contrast to the picture, since the background has gloomy clouds. This makes the young and beautiful maiden shine in the picture.

There are plenty other representatives that we did not tackle in this article, such as Kheshen Babatid representing San Fernando and Esperanza Mina representing Mandaue City in Miss Philippines Earth 2021, and so much more. We leave that to you, dear readers. What do you think about the outfits?

DOTr Secretary Art Tugade, in a video message, during the launching, said that DPWH in partnership with other government agencies have completed a total of 497 kilometers of bike lanes in Metro Manila, Metro Davao, and Metro Cebu.

This 2.4km bike lane is part of the initiative of the national government called the Metro Cebu Bike Lane Network.

“Indeed, for us at the DOTr, road safety is paramount. Kaya nga ‘ho sa kasagsagan ng pandemya, pinilit at pinipilit po naming tapusin ang mga quality at safe dedicated bike lanes. Dahilan dito, may kumpiyansa ang ating mga siklista at pedestrians, may disiplina ang ating motorista at higit sa lahat may pagbabago mula sa nakagawiang sistema sa daan,” Tugade added.

According to Cebu City councilor Gerardo “Gerry” Carillo, this bike lane starts from the Cebu South Coastal Road in Talisay and ends at the SRP viaduct.

Carillo reminded everyone that this lane is intended for cyclists, bikers, and joggers only. For cyclists, a minimum of 20km/hr is advised. Furthermore, this should also serve as a reminder to not abuse this bike lane by performing stunts and/or exhibitions. After all, we are all after everyone’s safety.
