Located at the heart of Minglanilla, Cebu, Finisterre Gardenz offers a peaceful escape just steps from the main road. Unlike traditional memorial landscapes, Finisterre Gardenz surprises visitors with its expansive space for recreational activities, blending tranquility with leisure.
The highlight? There’s no visible indication of a burial ground; instead, guests are greeted by a beautiful landscape that showcases the breathtaking views of Cebu, creating a fresh and inviting atmosphere.
A Paradise Of Serenity & Bliss
Finisterre Gardenz stands apart from other modern memorial spaces by focusing on the celebration of life and peace. Designed to resemble a serene residential village, guests are greeted upon arrival by the St. James Gate leading to the spacious El Camino Pavilion at the center, setting a welcoming tone. This thoughtful architecture ensures that visitors experience the essence of life in a peaceful setting.
Planning Your Visit: What to Expect at Finisterre
The El Camino Pavilion is just the beginning of the wide lush areas of Finisterre. Here are their amenities and spaces that you and your family can enjoy peace and tranquility of life:
El Camino Pavilion
The heart of Finisterre is the El Camino Pavilion as it serves as the center of the entire area. It is a sheltered structure where a space for events and occasions can be held, as well as a dedicated office area for the staff and crew of Finisterre.
Playland
Amidst its serene surroundings, you’ll find a delightful playground equipped with swings, slides, and monkey bars, providing a joyful escape for children. Adults, too, can unwind in the leisure spaces, creating a welcoming environment for families to gather, relax, and celebrate.
St. Peter’s Rock
The St. Peter’s Rock serves as a landmark in the place and marks the groundness and peace of St. Peter, the apostle. It is a boulder that has the arrow or symbol of Finisterre Gardenz.
Serenity Lawn
A double-depth in-ground burial plot that offers a dignified and serene final resting place. Each plot, marked with a timeless marble stone and covered with well-manicured grass, measures 2.5 meters in length by one meter in width, providing a total area of 2.5 square meters. These thoughtfully designed plots allow for the underground interment of two fresh remains or mortal bodies, as well as the accommodation of skeletal or ash remains in an urn. This layout ensures that loved ones can be laid to rest together in a peaceful, beautifully maintained environment.
Columbarium Niche
Known for their best-in-class burial units, Finisterre’s Columbarium Niches are meticulously crafted spaces with premium concrete to ensure durability and elegance. Each unit is complemented by flat markers of authentic marble stone, providing a timeless and dignified tribute.
Designed for single interment, each measures 80 cm by 80 cm at the opening and extends to a depth of 2.30 meters; these burial units combine quality construction with aesthetic appeal.
Memorial Chambers
Finisterre Gardenz features Memorial Chambers designed to offer a private and tranquil setting for families to honor and remember their loved ones. These chambers provide a sacred space for reflection and remembrance, situated at the upper park level with a magnificent garden view. Each concrete repository is crafted to accommodate a combination of up to five skeletal remains and ash urns, with an opening measurement of 40 cm by 40 cm by 80 cm.
Unlike other memorial gardens, Finisterre aims to offer the ultimate peace of minds to each of their guests. This is why in their interment, burials, and reburial services, they will take care of it for you with utmost sensitivity and professionalism filled with dignity. They even have their own in-house facilitators who will manage any occasion for you.
Vista Stairs
At the top of the park, the Vista features a set of stylish staircases that give you a stunning view of the park’s landscape. This spot offers a peaceful escape, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty and calm of the area.
Celebrating Life & Beyond
Finisterre Gardenz aims to be more than just a memorial garden; it strives to be a warm community hub where life is celebrated in all its forms.
With this vision, Finisterre hosts a variety of annual and semi-annual events that bring families and friends together in joy and remembrance.
One of the standout events is the yearly Halloween Extravaganza, where families with children gather to celebrate the fun and excitement of Halloween. This event has become a beloved tradition of the residents in Minglanilla, filled with costumes, treats, and festive activities.
In addition to the Halloween celebration, Finisterre Gardenz hosts several other significant events throughout the year, including:
The Archer Awards
An annual and semi-annual event that celebrates the efforts and achievements of Finisterre’s esteemed community, showcasing the dedication and hard work of its members. This gathering not only honors individual accomplishments but also fosters a sense of unity and pride among the company, highlighting the collective spirit that makes Finisterre truly exceptional.
Finisterre Fiesta
A colorful festival filled with music, food, and cultural activities to celebrate the milestones of the company.
Finisterre Kite Festival
A lively event where colorful kites fill the sky, bringing joy to participants of all ages. It is held at the topmost area of Finisterre where the view of the Cebu seas and the humongous Anjo World ferris wheel can be seen.
Sugat-Kabanhawan Festival
A celebration of the Minglanilla residents that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter.
Moreover, Finisterre Gardenz offers tons of spaces for hosting private events, making it an ideal venue for birthdays, weddings, activities, and anniversary celebrations.
We Went to Finisterre & Here’s What We Think
In all honesty, we initially thought we were heading to a typical cemetery, expecting to see niches, underground burials, and the usual scent of candles and flowers at the entrance. But, amazingly, all we smelled were fresh air and well-cut grass!
The St. James Gate was grand, reminiscent of those you’d see in upscale subdivisions and private villages. Upon entering, we found ourselves stepping onto a charming brick pavement that leads straight to the Chapel and El Camino Pavilion where we were met and welcomed warmly by their staff.
The area is beautifully surrounded by lush greenery and adorned with creative designs, including a delightful group of chicken statues that add a touch of whimsy to the place.
During our tour, we hopped onto a golf cart for easier access to the expansive grounds. We were taken around the area, from its lowest point to a vantage point that boasts one of the most breathtaking views of Cebu.
A Promising Future Ahead
Finisterre Gardenz is constantly enhancing its amenities to provide an even more enjoyable experience for its guests. Exciting additions like the La Paloma Aviary, Fontana Finisterre, and the Family Estate are just a few examples of the continuous improvements being made. We eagerly anticipate these new features and look forward to witnessing how they will further develop this already remarkable place.
Finisterre Gardenz is truly setting a new standard for memorial gardens, making it a place for celebration and not just for a once-a-year candlelit tradition.

A brand new chapter in Miss Universe history is finally written for the Philippines. In addition to the country’s four-time victory, this year marks the debut of the first-ever Filipino-made Miss Universe crown.
Screengrab from the Miss Universe Official Facebook Page
Jewelmer, a Filipino jewelry brand, crafted the crown for the Miss Universe 2024, which took an extensive five years and 377 steps to complete. The Lumiere de I’Infini Crown, also known as the “Light of Infinity Crown”, is described as a “pinnacle of savoir-faire”, a term meaning the utmost skill and craftsmanship.

This crown replaces the previous “Force for Good” crown introduced in 2022 by Mouawad, a well-known jewelry and luxury watch brand. It had 110 carats of blue sapphires and 48 carats of diamonds, adding up to a total of 158 carats.
SYMBOLISM & CRAFTSMANSHIP

Jewelmer highlighted that creating the crown involved a large team, including artisans and pearl farmers. This emphasis on collaboration underlines the brand’s pride in Filipino craftsmanship and the traditional knowledge that went into its creation.
The crown’s design combines local materials and craftsmanship, using South Sea pearls and diamonds to create a look that mirrors ocean waves. At the center, a single golden pearl symbolizes the sun, with diamond rays around it to represent light. This centerpiece, the crown’s most striking feature, embodies the beauty and uniqueness of the Philippines’ natural resources.

FILIPINO PRIDE

For the Philippines, this achievement is a source of national pride. Not only does it celebrate Filipino skill in high jewelry design, but it also elevates the country’s jewelry industry on an international platform. Jacques Christophe Branellec, the founder of Jewelmer, expresses that this moment honors Filipino culture and the South Sea Pearl itself, which Jewelmer has championed since its founding in 1979.

For Chelsea Manalo, the Philippines’ Miss Universe 2024 representative, there is added significance as she competes not only for the Miss Universe title, but also to bring home a crown made by Filipino hands, symbolizing both her heritage and national pride.

The crown’s debut is making waves, and the Philippines is already shining brighter than ever. Can’t wait to see which Miss Universe representative gets to wear it next—though, let’s be honest, we’re all secretly hoping it’s the Philippines.
Microsoft has been making a profound impact on the technology industry and society as a whole, shaping the way we work, communicate, and innovate through its software, cloud services, and pioneering advancements in artificial intelligence.
Photo from Papal Basilca of St. Peter Official Website
With all the advanced technology Microsoft has, they now have the resources to create a world we never thought we can actually see through our naked eyes—well, sort of, and “-ish”. This innovation opens up new opportunities for those who can’t afford to travel, allowing them to experience destinations they might never visit in person. Does virtual reality count as travel?
The Vatican is pre-eminently the holy city for Catholics. We could think of lots of Filipino Catholics dreaming of visiting there. If Microsoft can now create this kind of technology, then we actually have the chance to experience the Vatican without actually going there.

VIRTUAL TOUR OF ST. PETER’S BASILICA
Screengrab from The Vatican’s Official Website
Microsoft and the Vatican have created a digital twin—a detailed 3D digital replica—of St. Peter’s Basilica using AI and over 400,000 high-resolution images. This project, launched in Vatican City, enables virtual exploration of the basilica and will aid conservation efforts. Through photogrammetry (a technology for creating 3D models from photos), drones, and lasers, they produced an incredibly detailed replica, helping the Vatican monitor visitor flow, manage entry and spot structural issues. This will allow people to explore the basilica’s history and architecture online.
Starting December 1 this year, visitors to the basilica’s website will be able to take a virtual tour, showing the basilica’s evolution over centuries, from ancient Roman times to today. Learn about its history, there will be an interactive timeline showing how the basilica has changed over the years. And finally, you can also explore notable spaces which include areas like the Vatican grottoes and the grand dome that crowns the building.

HIGH POTENTIAL
This AI also assists in detecting damage to the basilica, such as missing mosaic pieces and cracks that are invisible to the naked eye. This AI-driven monitoring is faster and more precise than traditional methods, allowing the Vatican to detect early signs of structural deterioration.
Pope Francis, a proponent of ethical AI, views this project as a way to preserve the basilica’s spiritual and cultural heritage responsibly. He recently called for an international treaty to ensure AI aligns with human values. He emphasizes that this technology aids in both the spiritual and material care of the basilica, showing a commitment to ethical AI in preserving cultural heritage. This initiative reflects similar projects by Microsoft, such as the digital preservation of Mont Saint-Michel and Ancient Olympia, underscoring the potential of AI to support global heritage conservation.
In the future, this AI will be relevant next year, especially when millions of pilgrims are expected to visit Rome for an upcoming event, the Catholic Jubilee in 2025. The virtual access to Saint Peter’s Basilica offers an alternative to those who might not be able to visit in person due to crowd sizes or travel limitations.

Chick No. 30 was born on November 11, 2024, and the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) excitedly shared the news on social media. This marks a significant milestone in the successful hatching of the chick at their newly established National Bird Breeding Sanctuary.
56 Days of Careful Attention
Photo from the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) Official Facebook Page
It took 56 days for the egg to incubate before the chick was ready to hatch. According to PEF, the team had to step in to assist during the process to ensure the chick didn’t suffocate due to excess carbon buildup.
“The decision to use the ‘help out’ method was not made lightly,” shared the BBS Facility Manager and PEF’s conservation breeding expert, Mr. Domingo Tadena, “It was a calculated measure based on years of experience and the chick’s status during the later stages of incubation. Without our intervention, the risk of losing this hatching to suffocation was high. This chick’s survival represents not just a successful breeding cycle.”
A Scientific Success
Photo from the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) Official Website
Chick No. 30 is the result of artificial insemination, using a female eagle named “Pinpin” and a male eagle named “Sinag.” Pinpin incubated the egg for the first seven days, and the success of the hatching was made possible with the help of advanced equipment donated by the Liberec Zoo in the Czech Republic.
This hatch represents a major step forward in the conservation of the endangered Philippine Eagle, combining science and expertise to protect this magnificent species.
Did you know about the Ati community here in Cebu? They’re an indigenous group with a deep cultural history.
The Ati community are considered descendants of the earliest inhabitants of Panay Island, dating back about thirty thousand years. Due to issues like land disputes and environmental changes, many Ati people relocated, with some eventually settling in Cebu.
In Cebu, the Ati are known for their traditional skills, including hunting, fishing and gathering. They also have a strong understanding of ethnomedicine, using natural remedies to treat illnesses. In case you’re wondering what ethnomedicine means, it is a comparative medical study of how different cultures treat illnesses based on their cultural views. It is also defined as the medical beliefs and practices of indigenous cultures.
The Ati traditionally had healers who performed rituals for specific ailments. These are some examples the community’s ethnomedicinal practice:
They create bracelets known as “panagang” or “kuntra sa buyag” which are believed to protect against negative forces. They are most worn by newborn babies.
The “hambubukad” known as dried flying lizards which are used to treat asthma.
The Ati makes a talisman, or “habak”, consisting of various plants, minerals, and other ingredients placed in a small pouch worn around the waist. This amulet is intended to shield the wearer from illness and misfortune.
According to them, Good Friday is the most powerful day for gathering medicinal plants, as they consider it a holy day that enhances the efficacy of their remedies. The collected plants are prepared and combined back in the community to create various ethnomedicinal products.
They use palina, a ritual burning of specific plant leaves, branches, or other materials like almaciga resin (kamangyan) combined with tawas, to create a protective smoke. The smoke is used to cleanse and drive away bad luck or evil influences, especially for babies, pregnant women, or houses.
Some of these traditional remedies are sold at Cebu City’s Carbon Market, reflecting the Ati’s cultural influence on local healing practices. Today, around 200 of the Ati population live in the City of Naga Cebu with support from local and national organizations.
Some late Sugboanons are concerned about their small population. Ethnomedicinal knowledge was traditionally passed down through generations, but it’s at risk of being lost due to a lack of interest from younger generations since the Western medicine was introduced. Now that there are scientific facts, these cultural practices are fading away.
How about you? Do you still believe in Ethnomedicine, Sugboanons?

Your favorite animated franchise is returning to the big screen! After eight years since the last film, a new Ice Age sequel is finally in production.
On November 9, 2024 at D23 Brazil, Disney released a teaser video announcing the upcoming film. Original cast members Ray Romano (Manny), John Leguizamo (Sid), Denis Leary (Diego), Simon Pegg (Buck), and Queen Latifah (Ellie) are all set to reprise their iconic roles. Other cast members are still to be announced in the future.
HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW
Photo from Ice Age
While details about the film’s plot are still under wraps, one thing is certain: Scrat, the lovable saber-tooth squirrel, will be front and center. After all, no Ice Age movie would be complete without him—he’s the one responsible for setting the events of the entire franchise in motion.
This time, Scrat will be joined by Baby Scrat, who made his debut in the 2022 Ice Age: Scrat Tales series. With two mischievous squirrels in the mix, we can expect even more chaotic antics and a brand-new ice age catastrophe. Get ready for a wild ride!
ICE AGE 6 WILL BE MADE BY DISNEY
Photo from Ice Age
Since Blue Sky Studios was shut down by Disney in 2021, this upcoming Ice Age film will be the second in the franchise produced by Disney, following The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, which was released directly to Disney+ as a spin-off.
Since the release of that spin-off, fans are hoping Disney won’t disappoint them with their second film. Many are eager to move past the disappointment of the first and forget it ever happened. Despite that, fans are looking forward to seeing the franchise back in cinemas.
Ice Age 6 will premiere in 2026, the same year Shrek 5 and Toy Story 5 will be released. Stay tuned for more updates.
Unsa na’ng “NUISANCE” uy? Well, Sugboanons, the term “nuisance” refers to something that causes inconvenience and annoyance. So, putting the two together, a “nuisance candidate” is someone whose intent is to mock the election process and cause confusion or inconvenience to voters. In short, nagpataas ra sila sa lista!
Photo from COMELEC Official Facebook Page
According to the Omnibus Election Code’s Section 69, a nuisance candidate is defined as one who files a certificate of candidacy:
to put the election process in mockery or disrepute; or
to cause confusion among the voters by the similarity of the names; or
in other circumstances which clearly demonstrate that the candidate has NO bona fide intention to run for the office and to prevent a faithful determination of the true will of the electorate.
The Forty-Seven
The COMELEC declared 47 senate aspirants as “NUISANCE CANDIDATES” and may revoke their run for candidacy for the upcoming May 2025 elections. But, of course, there is a process for the candidates to file a petition for reconsideration:
Photos from COMELEC Official Facebook Page
An aspirant gets tagged as a nuisance candidate for many reasons, including but not limited to the following:
No political party
Lacks social media presence
No statements
No policies
No platforms
Photo from COMELEC Official Facebook Page
So, Sugboanons, do you agree with the list of nuisance candidates or should the COMELEC reconsider especially to give way for new leaders to rise in the future?
