The Short Attack that Feels like a Lifetime

Mental health issues have always been a major concern in our society. However, the medical field has seen an unprecedented spike of it during the COVID-2019 lockdowns. Leading them to believe that the long period of isolation from the outside world caused this alarming phenomenon.

One of the mental health issues that our society is facing today are anxiety attacks or what are commonly known as panic attacks. Panic attacks happen when a person suddenly experiences an unexpected spike of anxiety that might be triggered with over breathing, long periods of stress, physical activities that might lead to intense physical reactions, excessive coffee drinking, physical changes happening after an illness or a sudden change of environment.

Although medical experts describe the attack to be short (between 5 – 20 minutes) and not life-threatening, to an individual who is experiencing the attack, it feels otherwise. The short duration the doctors are talking about feels like an entire lifetime for a person experiencing the attack. It’s as if the individual is facing death face to face but is unwilling to come with it and is fighting back with all his/her might.

Panic attacks are sometimes confused with cardiac arrest, but, doctors have put a clear distinction between the two. However, how do we identify if it is a panic attack?

The Symptoms

Panic attacks are also classified by medical experts as the sudden feeling of losing control even if there are no clear signs of threat and danger. The doctors classify an attack as a panic attack if an individual experiences a combination of the following symptoms:

  • Pounding Racing Heart
  • Sweating
  • Chills
  • Trembling
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Weakness or Dizziness
  • Tingly or Numb Hands
  • Chest Pain
  • Stomach Pain or Nausea
  • Hot Flushes
  • Chills
  • A Choking Sensation
  • Dry Mouth
  • Feeling of Dread or a Fear of Dying
  • A Churning Stomach
  • Feeling that You’re Not Connected to Your Body

If you are experiencing these symptoms then you might be having a panic attack.

What to Do During an Attack?

Sometimes, it is inevitable that we are alone during an attack. Hence it is dreadful to think of this possibility, since most persons experiencing it crave for company to alleviate and remedy the panic attack. However, there are ways to calm yourself down during your panic episodes when you’re alone:

  • Remember that the attack will pass
  • Take deep breaths
  • Smell some lavender
  • Find a peaceful spot
  • Focus on an object
  • The 5-4-3-2-1 method
  • Look at 5 different objects
  • Listen to 4 distinct sounds
  • Touch 3 objects
  • Identify 2 different smells
  • Name 1 thing you can taste
  • Repeat a mantra (a phrase that you think might calm you down)
  • Walk or do some light exercises
  • Try some muscle relaxation techniques
  • Picture a happy place
  • Take any prescribed medications
  • Learn your triggers in order to avoid them

However, it is important to remember that a panic attack may happen without specific triggers. Hence, it is imperative that you seek medical attention immediately if you’re experiencing the attacks in a frequent manner.

—  The uncertainties in the society molded by the brutality of human hands are putting our mental health at stake. Hence, it is important to remember that we must guard ourselves well and be close to individuals who truly care about our well-being to tide across the tumultuous waters of our current era. How about you fellow Sugboanon? What are your thoughts regarding this?

The Man with the Plan: Meet Carlo Abaquita, the Top Wedding Planner of Cebu

0

In a generation filled with scammers and fake event organizers, one name stands out for maintaining its reputation as one of Cebu’s top wedding and event planners: Carlo Abaquita!

Who Is Carlo Abaquita?

Carlo Abaquita is a proud Cebuano who is already the household name when it comes to weddings and events. Big companies and organizations reach out to him to plan their celebrations, and brides and grooms trust his hands to put their wedding dreams to reality. But, who is Carlo Abaquita outside the busy hustle of wedding planning and beyond being a nurse?

I am a simple dreamer.

Carlo Abaquita

“We were not born rich and lisud among life when I was young,” shared Carlo as he recalled the times when he was still a student. Looking back, he remembered how his parents just urged him to graduate so he can finally work. “Pagskwela ug tarung para makatrabaho ka,” his parents said, and he did.

Carlo Abaquita graduated with a Nursing degree and worked in Perpetual Succour Hospital for 5 years. “When I graduated, they were very happy; much more when I finally got the job as a nurse. THAT was their dream for me. So, mao to, mana ilaha, ako nasad.”

Photo from Carlo Abaquita

A Journey Of Realizations & Reality

When asked about the beginnings of his career, Carlo revealed that it took a major realization for him to fully get into the field of event organizing. “Because ang akong goal jud ever since was to go abroad and become a nurse, in which I was able to become one, just here locally sa Perpetual Succour, for 5 years,” he shared. However, Carlo faced numerous challenges in his pursuit of working abroad, and so he continued his side hustle of event organizing. Little did he know, his dedication to creating magical memories for his clients was precisely what the universe had in store for him.

My career is not what I studied for, but because of my experiences and how the universe opened up doors for me, I am here; enjoying this life.

Carlo Abaquita

And guess what his realization was? “Nakarealize ko nga naa man diay kwarta sa events! Although it’s not that big, pero naa,” Carlo said, recounting his shock at the discovery.

Initially, he would accept small fees of 500 to 1,000 pesos from friends for organizing events just for fun. “As part of the LGBTQIA+ community, we are very talented jud nu. So, I used to work with Circa Events, and when the owner went to Canada kay iyang gibilin sa ako ang ubang task. We handle tons of pageants and modeling fashion shows, and I was okay with that; until…” Carlo’s turning point came when a friend asked him to organize a wedding, which did not go as planned. “Daghan kaayog palpak,” he admitted. “You’ll realize the importance of the tiniest parts sa event, such as the rings, the line-up, everything!” Despite the setbacks, this experience was important in shaping his journey toward becoming one of Cebu’s top wedding planners.

Crafting Perfection Through Challenges & Triumphs

Photo from Carlo Abaquita

For 15 years, Carlo has been crafting magic and granting unforgettable memories for his clients, and he has gained their loyalty and satisfaction every single time. This consistency of Carlo and his team made them a household name in the industry of events and wedding planning.

Recently, Carlo received an award as one of the “Top 10 Wedding Planners In Cebu,” and he and his team truly deserved it. When asked about how he feels learning that he has gained the loyalty of many brides over the years, Carlo smiled warmly and said,

It’s an honor.
Makaflatter, makahappy. It’s one of the reasons why we keep on pushing forward despite sa kakapoy at times…

Carlo Abaquita

…In this industry, you get to build relationships and friendships.” He shared that he had clients who were once the brides and they come back bringing their daughters, friends, and even grandchildren who will be getting married.

Humbly, Carlo expressed his gratitude to the mentorship he received in his early years, “I’m very proud to say that my mentor was Mommy Ramil Solis who was a makeup artist for 35 years already. I think swerte lang siguro ko when I started nga I’m surrounded with mga mommies in Cebu, like Mommy Santiago and Ramil; they were the most humble bunch nga ako nakakuyog and they taught me well, especially when it comes to managing a work-life balance. They used to say, ‘Everything is temporary. All you need to do is to enjoy lang jud.’”

Balancing Act: Managing Stress & Maintaining Passion

Photo from Carlo Abaquita

The wedding scene in the Queen City of the South is getting busier day by day, especially during the months of June and December. According to Carlo, there are times when they organize up to 20 weddings a month, or as much as one to two weddings a day for 9 straight days! Imagine the toll it takes on one’s physique and mental state, in which Carlo agrees. “Among challenge jud kay ang sa among mental health because your physical state can be managed due to the manpower, but mentally? The pressure’s always on.”

You need to dance with the rain; if it’s gonna happen, then it’s gonna happen.

Carlo Abaquita

Carlo listed possible scenarios that could go wrong in just one day such as the chandelier possibly falling, or a platform breaking down just an hour prior to the opening of the venue’s doors. However, he shared that thinking about these scenarios ahead of time makes them prepared and enjoy the big day.

Admittedly, Carlo also shared that there was a time when he really gave a client up, “You need to learn to set your limits and boundaries, so if grabe najud ka-difficult ang client, then we’d advise for that client to look for a different organizer, before it all goes south.” When it comes to the percentage, he said that it’s only 2 out of 100 clients that he and his team had to return the initial payment and surrender the client to another event planner. “Luckily, most of our clients trust us and they already know what we can do, so they hand over their trust to me and my team. Di na sila magduha-duha. When the client doesn’t know you, they’d question your credibility and constant pa ang need to prove your expertise. ”

The Team Of Carlo Abaquita

Being a wedding and events planner gave Carlo tons of advantages and opened opportunities he just used to dream when he was younger. It allowed him to travel abroad without paying for anything, from Australia, Canada, New York, to Japan! “It’s the best job; and I’ve worked different jobs before, but being an events & wedding planner is just beyond what I expected,” said Carlo. But, the biggest question is how Carlo’s team and mind work when it comes to organizing events flawlessly? And he answered humbly, “It takes a village…

The secret recipe is having staff whom I can trust.

Carlo Abaquita

Since Carlo started, they were able to utilize social media, specifically Facebook, to market their services. From a wedding-a-day, Carlo and his team managed to triple the numbers and became the trendsetters in the events and wedding organizing industry.

Tips for Aspiring Events Planners

Of course, our interview will not be complete without asking Carlo some tips he can pass on to the next generation of aspiring events and wedding planners, and here’s his ultimate list:

Carlo’s Thoughts On The Issue Of Wedding & Event Scammers In Cebu

Carlo believed that the tag “scammer” is loosely used nowadays, “I think some organizers do not intend to scam and I’m not saying daghan jud ang scammers karun, they just need to learn how to handle and stay within their budget. Na-tag nalang na sila kay wa man sila kadeliver sa services on time. Always remember that the money your client will hand you is not yours.”

Unique Events was the name of Carlo’s organization and team, and they have rescued many couples who unfortunately, got subpar services from other groups. When it comes to helping the victims, Carlo’s go-to was to ask his team. “I always ask my team, the suppliers, and everyone involved if they can spare something or donate things and services for free, because let’s be honest, we still have to pay them. You have to pay for the venue, the flowers, and the food! Bisag gamay.”

Carlo’s advice to couples planning to have their wedding is:

If it’s too good to be true, then it probably is!

Carlo Abaquita

“This is a type of job nga dako. It involves a lot of money, tagaan ka ana nga amount, and if the organizer can’t manage that one, mao nang ma-aan jud nga nang scam. Some organizers will keep on posting promos to collect more money kay they are compensating sa ilang na-overspend. Pero ang gibayad sa bride whose wedding will be next year kay itapal nila sa one whose wedding is near nga ilahang naoverspendan.”

Future Plans: What’s Next for Carlo Abaquita?

Some people dream grand, while others embrace reality and make the best of it as they’re already living their dreams, and Carlo is one of the latter. Contented and happy with the status of his life in the current, he shared how he values the relationships around him as opposed to the goal of earning more or becoming more, “It’s not about the money anymore but the people that surround you.”

Slimy Surgery: Robotic Slime to Retrieve Objects Inside Human Bodies

0

Our favorite slime toy can now be used to save human lives!

Slimes are commonly used as toys by people of all ages. However, did you know that a recent scientific discovery has given them the ability to be used as a medical tool to treat patients?

Photo from Chinese University in Hong Kong

Another Medical Discovery

The Hong Kongese academia has contributed another novel concept to medical science that might offer significant help to medical operations and internal surgeries; a robotic slime that can go in and out of the human body. Currently, the robotic slime is under development with the collaboration of The Chinese University in Hong Kong and Harbin Institute of Technology.

The Gooey Medical Tool

Photo from Chinese University in Hong Kong

The slime was authored and developed with a basic use of getting out unwanted objects inside the body that was accidentally ingested. It will basically work using the magnetic property to avoid incision and cuts.

Hence, the slime will be constructed with materials with a magnetic element. To cover the toxic properties of the magnet, it will be covered with slime ensuring the safety and security of the patient.

Apparently, the slime will behave like solid if it is applied with a strong force and will behave like liquid if a gentle force is applied on it. Furthermore, the robotic slime can be controlled to take different forms; forms like C and O.

The chief author of the concept Li Zhang also stated that the discovery can not only be applied to medicine, but it can also be used for other real-world applications.

— Medical science is one of the most important branches of life sciences. Since this field solely focuses on saving human lives, and we know how fragile a human life can be. This discovery will surely be a huge boost to the field to further our knowledge in curing and extending human life.

A Kagwang in the Flesh — The Philippine Flying Lemur

0

Kagwang is a common Bisaya term to describe someone who is careless, boisterous and flippant. However, did you know that ‘Kagwang’ truly exists in the flesh? That’s right,  Kagwang is an alive being living among us!

Photo from the DENR

An Endemic Species

Cynocephalus volans or commonly known as the Philippine Flying Lemur is an endemic land animal in the Philippines. This animal can be commonly found in Southern Mindanao and Bohol. On rare occasions, they can also be spotted in Samar and Leyte.

However, the locals know this animal by the name of Kagwang. Currently, the animal is numbered around 100, 000 in population. They are expected to live for 17.5 years, and weigh around 1 – 1.7 kg. The Kagwangs currently stand around 13.8 – 16.9 inches tall.

Although called flying lemurs, these animals cannot fly and most certainly not a lemur! Instead, these creatures glide through the air using the large folds of skin and leap along tree branches. Moreover, these organisms are closely related to bats and are classified as nocturnal animals making them only observable during dusk or dawn.

Photo from Canva

Not Getting Enough Attention

We currently have limited data on these animals since these plant-based diet creatures are listed among the least studied animals in the Philippines. Back in 2008, the Kagwangs were labeled by The International Union for Conservation of Nature as ‘least concern’.

However, due to large-scale deforestation and devastating typhoons in the country, Kagwangs are hypothesized by environmentalists as one of the threatened species in the Philippines, since these animals mostly live in rainforests due to its terrain and abundance of trees.

Photo from Canva

— Philippines is home to unique and never-seen-before species of animals. However, our forests, which are the natural habitat to these organisms, are being purged one by one; threatening the lives of these animals and exposing them to mass extinctions. Therefore, we must stop these violent acts towards nature lest we lose all of our wildlife.

Become a BGC Conyo Kid With These 5 Conyo Terms!

0

RUG, bro?

Photo from the Bonifacio Global City Official Instagram

The conyo kids are all around the internet nowadays and are using terms we cannot understand. Hence, we are here to explain some conyo terms used by the rich kids in their conversations.

Photo from Kyle Echarri’s Official Instagram

What Is Conyo?

The usage of the term conyo can be traced back in the colonial 19th century in the Philippines. The term was given to the Filipinos who belonged to the upper society. However, its first usage can be heard around the Spanish regime in the country. The word was used to describe Spanish expatriates who seemed to enjoy using the term as a swear word.

Currently, the term conyo is used to describe Filipino kids who were raised in a well-off family that are predominant English speakers. These people mostly talk Taglish; a relatively newly invented language by these kids which combines Tagalog and English in their sentences.

The Conyo Kids

Photo from Pexels

Most Filipino kids who are around BGC in our current generation are mostly children who came from families in the upper ring of the society. Most of them can be observed to be using a mixture of Tagalog and English terms in their conversations, thereby gaining the nickname the conyo kids.

Crazy Conyo Terms by the BGC Coded Kids

There are already a lot of conyo terms in the Filipino lexicon. However, overtime, these words have already evolved into something that is really hard to understand especially if you are not up to the current internet updates.

These days, the BGC kids are coming up with a lot of crazy words. Below are terms these kids are using in their personal and group conversations!

CARPS

Photo from Pexels

This conyo term is the short term for the expression ‘Are You G?’. This is used when a person wants to ask someone if they are down for a celebration or something similar. The term is derived from the word carpet which is synonymous with the word RUG. Moreover, RUG is spelled as R-U-G which sounds like the expression ‘Are You G’.

Example:

“Uy broski, we have inuman later tonight. Ano, carps?”

PICS

Photo from Pexels

A conyo word that is used to shorten the term ‘I Am G’. The term ‘I Am G’ is commonly used by people when they agree to an invitation by a friend. The term PICS is derived from the word pictures. Picture is abbreviated as IMG when being downloaded or uploaded in a computer, and the acronym IMG can be pronounced as I-M-G which is synonymous to the sound of the common expression ‘I Am G’.

Example:

“Uy broski, we have inuman later tonight. Ano, carps?”

“Pics pare, since I don’t have anything naman to do tonight!”

SCOOBS

Photo from Scooby Doo

This term is used when a person wants to refuse something that is offered. Initially, the first conyo term for the refusal was Deins. However, as time went by the term evolved into something more incomprehensible! The term Scoobs was based on the initial term deins. Since Scooby-Doo’s dog breed is a Great Dane which is synonymous to the sound of the initial conyo term. Thereby, gaining the term SCOOBS.

Example:

“Uy broski, we have inuman later tonight. Ano, carps?”

“Scoobs pare, I have a date with my jowa later tonight kase.”

FROGS

Photo of Pepe The Frog

A conyo term used by the BGC kids to tell you to get well soon! Frog is translated as palaka in Filipino. Hence, by adding ‘s’ to the word frog it has become an imperative to add ‘s’ to the palaka word too. Gaining us the term palakas which can be used as palakas ka; which can be translated in English as get well soon!

Example:

“Broski I can’t sama to the planned staycation in Paris. I’m sick kase.”

“Uy sayang broski, frogs ka diyan, para you can make sama na next time.”

GUMPS

Photo from IMDB

This term is used by the BGC conyo kids to express thanks. The word GUMPS is based on the movie Forrest Gump. Since the main character was played by veteran actor Tom Hanks, and his name can be abbreviated as T.Hanks which can be spelled as ‘Thanks’.

Example:

“Pare, I have panda dunks here and I want to make bigay this to you.”

“Uy, gumps pare! I’ve been looking for panda dunks for a long na rin kase.”

Conyo terms is one of the proofs that Filipino wittiness is truly limitless and unparalleled. However, it is important to remember that we must not forget our mother tongue lest we forget about our Filipino roots. How about you though, how do you feel about these terms, do you think this will change the Filipino lexicon in its entirety? Or perhaps just improve the range of Filipino vocabulary?

In December 2023, Meta launched a default end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls in Messenger. Along with it is the updated feature of the messaging app that enables the user to edit a message. Meta has added an edit button when you long-press your own message sent within the app. However, the update can only allow the user the message that was sent within 15 minutes.

Is It Safe?

The updated feature of the app has become a concern for the app’s avid users, since the feature may be used for personal gain with hidden agendas, such as editing a message to tamper potential court evidence that can be used in a criminal trial. However, Meta reassured its users that they can report an edited message and the report will enable Meta to view the original content of the modified message.

— The update can be helpful for a lot of Messenger users, especially those who are careless enough to send nonsensical and shameful messages. Nevertheless, it is still important to review and reread the messages that you will send to a person online since Meta has a backup feature that enables them to view your unedited message sent in the app, and remember that a screenshot feature is available for all cellphones today; hence, your shameful and nonsensical messages can be documented and recorded!
