— Traveling to other countries is a fun thing to do, but we should remember that we need to be careful during our trip to truly enjoy our tour. We should also be especially cautious to travel to other places now, since our country’s weather has started to become unstable due to the presence of hanging Habagat (Southwest Monsoon).

#ThePeopleofCebu: Cebu’s Opinion on the Cebuano Fashion Scene

0

Cebuano fashion has always been a controversial topic for many Filipinos and Cebuanos alike, especially that the country is highly conservative due to the large influence of Catholic teachings. However, as eons went by, our fashion culture is slowly breaking out the norms of the country.

Pride Campaign by ANTHILL Fabric Gallery

Hence, we went on the busy streets of Cebu and asked the people of Cebu about their personal perspective on its current fashion scene.

An Expression

Princess Christine Literato shared that right now, fashion is how Cebuanos express themselves. Similarly, both Yoshi Cañete and Josh Plariza shared the same insights.

Moreover, Rizelle Caumeran shared that fashion is also a Cebuano’s outlet of expression. Like the way she dresses is how she expresses herself, it’s like how she’s telling the world who she is through the way she dresses.

Mackabuang or also known as Mack also views fashion in the same light as Princess and the other three. He remarked that fashion is “being who you are and how you express yourself.”

Additionally, Kamille Bascar, also views fashion as a self-expression. Further stating that fashion is an art and it’s an outlet one can express himself/herself or just “a way to be who you are.”

Further proving this point, Clarence expressed that fashion is an art, since art is how people express themselves and the way Cebuano people use fashion as an outlet for their personality, then fashion is truly an art.

Adaptation

Sniwel John Lenix Cartagena shared his sentiments that the fashion in Cebu is largely affected by the climate and weather of the country. That the clothing that an individual wears is dependent on how hot or how cold the surrounding environment is. This has also shown how versatile Cebuano fashion can be.

Pop Culture

Andrie Elizalde, who is apparently just a visitor of Cebu, shared his insights on the Cebuano fashion scene. He was actually impressed by the Cebuano fashion scene. According to him, our fashion is largely influenced by pop culture. Further adding that our current pop preferences are what’s affecting our personal choice of clothing.

Western Influence

For a high school student, the current fashion scene of Cebu is now slowly adapting to the Western influence, that the current generation of Cebuanos are integrating the Western style of dressing. She further added that the Western influence might be because of thrift stores that are mostly selling clothing that are largely influenced by Western fashion.

— The Cebuano fashion scene is rapidly evolving due to numerous factors, but the question remains, is this a good thing for Cebuano culture? Well, time will tell. For now, let us just relish and enjoy the colorful fashion scene of modern Cebu.

Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.

Photo contributed by Joselle C. Fulvadora

Parvo Awareness Month in the Philippines is observed every July during the rainy season. It is a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness about canine parvovirus, a highly contagious viral illness that primarily affects dogs.

Photo contributed by Joselle C. Fulvadora

What Is Parvo?

Canine parvovirus is a serious and often fatal disease, particularly affecting puppies and unvaccinated dogs. It is characterized by symptoms such as severe vomiting, diarrhea (watery and bloody), fatigue and loss of appetite. The virus spreads through direct contact with an infected dog or contaminated objects and surfaces, making it crucial for dog owners to maintain good hygiene and vaccination.

Activities during this month typically include informational seminars, discounted and free vaccination drives and community outreach programs to educate dog owners about the risks and preventive measures associated with parvovirus.

The Cebuano Terror of the Night — Sigbin

Hala naay Sigbin, naa siguro’y ungo sa duol!

Photo generated by Canva

The Myth of Sigbin

A Philippine mythological that is known to be commonly seen during the night. They are also infamously known for their vampiric tendencies in which they suck blood from their victims from their victim’s shadow.

Photo generated by Canva

The Sigbin is known to walk backwards with its head lowered between its hind legs. These creatures also have the ability to become invisible. They apparently emit a very foul odor that can make nearby creatures nauseate.

Photo generated by Canva

Oral hearsays state that the Sigbins usually come out from their lair during the Holy Week, where they look for children to snatch their hearts to craft them into amulets for their own use. Some people believe that these creatures are reared by rich people or other mythological creatures like aswangs.

Photo generated by Canva

In the olden belief, they say that if you see a Sigbin nearby, then it is a clear sign that an aswang is also near the vicinity. Hence, it is advisable to run if you see one.

What does a Sigbin look like?

Records that were passed down orally state that Sigbins resemble a hornless goat. They also have very long ears which have the ability to clap like hands. Their tails are long and flexible, which they use as a whip towards their potential victims. In some beliefs, the feet of these creatures are facing the wrong way which is the main reason why they walk backwards.

— It is interesting to see that our own culture has many colors and things that are yet to be unraveled. However, it is quite sad to think that most of the current generation has forgotten about these legends and myths that were the foundation of our modern culture. So, fellow Sugboanon, join us in remembering these stories to further spread the beautiful colors of our culture and history.

  • Create a LinkedIn Profile – LinkedIn is similar to Facebook but it’s for jobs. Many companies look for new hires on this platform, so make sure your profile includes your education, achievements and awards you’ve won and your previous job or internship experiences.
  • Prepare a Resume, CV & Portfolio– Your resume is a summary of your skills and experiences. You can download a simple resume template online or create your own. If you’re applying for creative jobs, like in the fields of design or media, put together a portfolio showcasing your best work. Some companies prefer online portfolios for convenience, so get ready to have one before you start to submit your resumes.

If you’re not ready to start working, you can consider taking in masteral programs to continue your studies and get a higher degree. Some professions require this sort of advancement such as those in law schools and in the medical field.

Take a Break First

After years of studying, it’s okay to take a break! You can rest and recharge while picking a new hobby to improve yourself. Better yet, focus on your mental and physical health to be more productive and happier in the long run.
