Lenten Traditions: The Role of Ash Wednesday in Christian Faith

Have you ever seen people walking around with crosses painted on their forehead? This happens at least once in a year for Christians.

Receiving ashes on one’s forehead is a tradition in time for the beginning of the Lenten season–the annual Ash Wednesday.

Every year, this day symbolizes the first day of the liturgical season of Lent. This falls six and a half weeks before Easter in preparation of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

This 2025, Ash Wednesday falls on March 5! Before that day comes, here are important things you need to know before starting with your Lenten journey.

Origin and Biblical Significance

Did you know that Ash Wednesday dates back 11 centuries ago? While its history is not clear, the tradition has been practiced way earlier with the ancient Hebrew custom of wearing sackcloth and putting on ashes to repent.

The ashes are an important part of the Lenten journey, especially since it symbolizes death and repentance.

Ashes are said to equate to dust, while human flesh is composed of dust as mentioned in the Book of Genesis from the Holy Bible. Thus, this symbolism is akin to the return of human beings to dust after death.

Ultimately, the tradition focuses on human mortality and sinfulness–an opportunity for Christians to enter the Lenten season with repentance in practice.

Modern Lenten Traditions

The tradition of receiving ashes persisted until today with modern Churches preparing ashes out of palm branches.

Photo from Joey Argawanon

These come from the previous Palm Sunday when priests bless the palms brought by the churchgoers.

The palms are a significant reference to Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem: onlookers filling His pathway with palm branches.

Aside from the cross on one’s forehead, Christians also practice fasting and abstinence. What do these practices entail, you may ask?

These are the specific details of the acts of penance

FASTING PRACTICES

  • For Roman Catholics, fasting is only advised for those ages 18 to 59.
  • Fasting with only one full meal and two smaller meals.
  • Snacking while fasting is allowed, but only if it is not a full meal.
  • Exemptions are made for those with special needs and restrictions.

ABSTINENCE PRACTICES

  • Young Catholics ages 14 and older must abstain from eating meat.
  • Abstinence is done on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent until Good Friday.
  • Food to be abstained include meat, wine, oil, and dairy products.
  • Food allowed includes fish and other non-meat alternatives available.
  • Other forms of abstinence include giving up other food, distractions, and addictions.

The practices outlined above may help with physical health, but beyond that, fasting and abstinence is about creating space and relying on God instead of earthly comforts.

At the end of this journey, the acts of penance strengthen faith and discipline. This leads to a deepened relationship with God and heightened awareness of His presence.

Lenten Season Practices

In a predominantly Catholic country, most Filipinos and Cebuanos practice Lent. How about other Christian denominations and religions?

Well, here’s the thing! Aside from Catholics, other denominations like the Orthodox, Anglican Church, and Episcopal Church also observe Lent.

Even though Lent is not named nor observed in the Holy Bible, this journey is practiced by Christians who believe in repentance and humility.

This is primarily why Lenten practices persist–the Scripture calls for a life of worship and self-discipline that is most exemplified during the Lenten season.

By the end of the Lenten season, believers are said to experience spiritual renewal.

This is not only a beginning of change but an ongoing mission to transform the Good News into good deeds towards one another.

The Church leaves with a message for Christians to ponder upon: “Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”

Burgers, Milkshakes, and the 1950s: What It’s Like Dining at Cocinero

If you love tall diner milkshakes topped with cherries, you’re in for a treat back in time!

Black and white checkered floors, red brick walls, and red-and-white diner chairs, all with a menu full of 1950s American classics—that’s what’s waiting for you at Cocineros Bar and Restaurant!

Located in Norkis Cyberpark, Mandaue City, Philippines, this retro diner takes you back to the 50’s. Inspired by the charm of classic American diners from the movies, the owners of Cocinero have made their vision a reality. Now, it’s becoming a popular spot as customers come in to enjoy the movie-set vibes and tasty menu options that surely brings anyone to either Riverdale or Grease.

A Filipino Name for an American-themed Diner?

The name of the restaurant, “Cocinero,” pays tribute to its Filipino owners, who are also fantastic cooks. They decided to keep this name even while embracing the vibe of a 1950s American diner. Originally, they thought about opening a Filipino-themed restaurant, but with so many of those around, they wanted something different.

Their goal is to transport customers into a classic 1950s movie, where high schoolers sport letterman jackets and puffy hairstyles. So, they chose to create an authentic American diner experience instead!

From Cheese Burgers to Banana Splits

Let’s talk about their best-sellers and best-tasting menu; because we just can’t get enough of it!

Heights and Cheese Burger

We can say that this is an absolute must-try! Juicy, flavorful, and piled high with all the classic toppings, it’s our favorite, and not to mention the free fries it comes with!

Cocinero’s Sandwich

This is their signature sandwich and is one of the best that you can choose from the menu! But, if you want other toppings perhaps, then don’t worry as they also have an All-Meat Sandwich, Cheesy Deli Sandwich, and the crowd-favorite Savory Chicken Sandwich!

Rice Meals

We Sugboanons and Filipinos love our rice to the core! So, if you’re out for lunch or maybe a satisfying dinner, then head to Cocineros because they have Rice Meals paired with different savory dishes such as the smoky BBQ Spareribs, juicy Burger Steak, and the well-seasoned Pan Seared Chicken!

Steak

You can never go wrong with a good rib-eye steak! Served with marble potatoes and buttered vegetables, their signature steak is one for the record if you’re up for an all-American experience!

Banana Split

Ah, the lord of all desserts—the Banana Split! Topped with creamy vanilla ice cream, sprinkled with mini marshmallows and rice crispies, drizzled with chocolate syrup, and served with a wafer stick; it is the perfect dessert to cap off your meal.

I-Scream Sundae

Not a fan of bananas? No problem! The I-Scream Sundae is a delicious alternative. It includes all the same delightful toppings as the Banana Split, minus the banana—just sweet and creamy ice cream served in a tall glass.

Experience the Golden Age of Hollywood

At Cocinero, it’s not just about the delicious food and top-notch service; they’ve got plenty of surprises for their customers! While you wait for your order, you can enjoy their free arcade games, and groove to classic pop songs that capture the true American diner vibe.

To make the experience even more special, the walls are plastered with portraits of iconic celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. As soon as you step through the doors, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time to a classic era that you only got to see on television.

Cebu Remembers: Historical Sites during the People Power Revolution

“NEVER AGAIN, NEVER FORGET!”

Screengrab from Aninaw Productions

A resounding chant echoes the streets of Cebu once again. Fists are raised, placards are carried–all to oppose attempts at the erasure of history.

This time, the roads remember the feet that once walked on them almost four decades ago.

Cebu remembers the horrors of dictatorship, but the Cebuanos also remember its resistance. And as the 39th People Power Revolution Anniversary is commemorated, these sites of resistance are cemented into memory.

Warm Bodies Fill the Streets of Cebu

The streets of Cebu have always been busy–even back in the 1970s when the doors were locked past curfew and the roads were blocked by state forces.

Fuente Osmeña

Fact of the day: The meeting area of modern rallies is usually held at Fuente Osmeña.

Photo from the wires
Photo contributed by Kentboy15

History shows that this is not a recent thing–organizations and alliances back in the day also gathered at this site to protest against state fascism.

Plaza Independencia

Did you know that now-usual date spot used to be a rallying point?

During the height of Martial Law, 3,000 warm bodies filled the plaza to protest for justice. In fact, Cebuano students linked arms with other sectors to further solidify their call.

Jones Avenue

The student population did not stand alone during the era of dictatorship–Jones Avenue bares witness to the solidarity of Cebuanos.

Before the U.S. Consulate in Cebu was transferred elsewhere, the avenue was filled with mobbers who stood in opposition to foreign control.

Juan Luna Street

One of the famous streets in Cebu also holds the greatest historical significance. Once again, the Cebuano students showed deep engagement with issues outside education as they marched against poverty.

Learning Outside the Classroom Walls

Education is not only a matter of lesson plans and exams, the Cebuano students learned back during Martial Law.

Aside from simply learning, schools became a major center for dissent against societal issues.

High Schools

In a particular high school in Cebu, students held a demonstration regarding constitutional conventions, indicating the early organizing of local student activism.

Universities

While early organizing efforts began in secondary-level schools, college students showed consistent forces in mobilization. The University-Belt in Cebu was aroused with agitation against human rights violations and other forms of brutality. This horror ended with injuries and deaths–but the martyrs of Cebu live on.

Most university administrations were hostile against dissent, even leading to a blacklist against activists, but resistance fueled the students.

The med students also coordinated with the labor sector in advocating for their rights.

It was not just the student leaders and students who stood up–student publications, too, exposed the violence that the regime was trying to hide in mainstream media.

Even then, the student population recognized that their role in resistance held greater power than the forcible suppression put upon them.

The Historical Sites of United Struggle

With the increasing repression of human rights, other sectors have shown united opposition against dictatorship.

Cebuano organizers militantly forwarded their demands with strikes. Workers resisted the issues within their workplace–from wages and benefits to their labor rights.

Meanwhile, the drivers and small operators organized city-wide protests together with the students. These strikes were political acts intended to raise the political consciousness of the Filipino people, illustrating the interconnectedness of student, labor, and social movements.

Decades later, the People Power Revolution is slowly being erased and forgotten. Cebu, however, stands as a testament to the nationwide struggle in remembering and resisting.

Today marks the day of victory in toppling a dictator. Tomorrow is another day of struggling for democracy.

Rare Diseases You Didn’t Know That Existed: From Mutations to Vampirism

0

February 28 is “Rare Disease Day”

Rare diseases haven’t received attention since they always affect a few people. What makes a disease rare and prevalent — the individuals living with it. In the United States, a rare disease is one that fewer than 200,000 people live with.

A rare disease is often genetic; 72% of rare diseases analyzed by researchers in a 2019 paper published in the European Journal of Human Genetics were found to have a genetic origin. Other rare diseases could be an infection or allergy. In many cases, the reason is always unknown.

Fatal Familial Insomnia

Photo from Canva

When a protein called prion causes normal brain proteins to fold abnormally, affected individuals may develop a prion disease such as fatal familial insomnia, which affects the PRNP gene. The FFI is the result of the changes in thalamus. The thalamus is the part of the brain that regulates sleep and consciousness, motor control, and many bodily functions. The disease causes insomnia, weight loss, increased or decreased body temperature, and rapid dementia. It only requires one gene from the parent and the individual can die within 12 to 18 months of the first symptom.

Progeria

Photo from progeriaresearch Instagram Page

At birth, children born with progeria look healthy but symptoms will begin to appear by the time they turn two. This genetic condition causes children to exhibit the signs of aging at an accelerated rate. They experience growth failures, loss of body fat, and exhibit the signs of aging found in older adults. People with progeria also experience hardening of the arteries, strokes, and cardiovascular diseases. People who are diagnosed with the disease will only live until they are fourteen years old.

Aarskog Syndrome

Photo from Canva

Short stature with limb, facial, and genital abnormalities characterize a rare genetic condition called Aarskog syndrome. This disorder affects more males than females and sometimes impairs intellectual capabilities. Twenty percent of people with Aarskog syndrome have a mutation with the FGDI gene, but the cause in others is unknown.

Symptoms can vary from person to person: drooping eyelids, an underdeveloped upper jawbone, fleshy earlobes, a prominent widow’s peak, and a delayed tooth eruption.

Gitelman Syndrome

Photo from Canva

Unlike many rare diseases, the disease may not appear until the second decade in life. Two mutated genes, one from each parent, cause the disorder. This syndrome is often compared to Bartter’s syndrome, damages to the kidney can lead to the progressing renal condition. The disorder causes an inability to absorb salt, forcing changes in the electrolytes, and the fluids outside the cells, and leading to dehydration. Individuals may frequent urination or large amounts of pee. Additionally, heart palpitations, fainting, and salt cravings.

Clinical Vampirism

Photo from Canva

Clinical Vampirism, also known as Renfield’s syndrome. This is a rare disorder or disease that is related to the obsession of drinking blood. The earliest presentation of clinical vampirism in psychiatric literature was a psychoanalytic interpretation of two cases. The authors Richard L. Vanden Bergh and John F. Kelley points out brief and sporadic reports of blood drinking behavior associated with pleasure. Many medical publications concerning clinical vampirism can be found in the literature of forensic psychiatry. This behavior is reported as an aspect of extraordinary violent crimes.

Celebrating Cebu Charter Day: A Look at Our City’s Heritage

Ay! Walay klase ug trabaho!

Photo Contributed by Soulful Studio PH

February 24th is a day for the people of Cebu! Each year, this day is dedicated to celebrating Cebu Charter Day, a special non-working holiday that commemorates the founding anniversary of our beloved city.

A Legal Holiday for the Sugboanons

In March 1992, the Cebu Charter Day was officially recognized as a holiday under Republic Act 7287. This legislation shows the significance of the event, allowing Cebuanos to honor their city’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The roots of Cebu City can be traced back to February 24, 1937, when it transitioned from a municipality governed by the Cebu provincial government to an independent chartered city. This transformation was made possible by Commonwealth Act No. 58, marking a pivotal moment in our city’s journey.

A Day of Reflection & Celebration

Photo Contributed by Soulful Studio PH

Cebu City holds a relevant place in the Philippines’ history, becoming the third city to be inaugurated in the nation, following Manila in 1571 and Baguio in 1909. This legacy shows the value of our identity as Cebuanos, reminding us of our city’s significance.

Cebu Charter Day is not just a day off from work; it’s an opportunity for us to reflect on our roots, celebrate our culture, and look forward to the future. So, itaas ang bandera sa lig-on nga Sugboanon, Cebu!

Health Risks of Instant Noodles: What Pancit Canton Lovers Need to Know

0

Shoutout to all pancit canton enjoyers, your health might be at risk because of your dietary patterns!

Photo from Canva

Did you know that instant food consumption is associated with cardiometabolic risk factors?

A study published in The Journal of Nutrition investigates the relationship between instant noodle consumption, dietary patterns, and cardiometabolic risk factors in South Korea.

Here is what was revealed about the link between instant food intake and its associated health risks so far!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!

Instant food is a staple among Asian countries, especially in South Korea and the Philippines.

Photo from Research Study by the World Instant Noodles Association showing the list of countries with the highest demand on instant noodles for consumption (per million servings) , as of May 13, 2024

In the Philippines, a demographer describes a typical young Filipino diet that mostly includes instant noodles, chips, grilled street food, and carbonated drinks.

It was revealed in 2014 that six in 10 young Filipinos have instant noodles and chips in their weekly diet.

Photo from Canva

Meanwhile, South Koreans have one of the highest per capita consumption of instant noodles globally with approximately 3.4 billion packages of instant noodles in 2010.

With data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV from 2007 to 2009, the research shows the link between high instant noodle intake and increased cardiometabolic risks.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

The Journal of Nutrition research found that consuming instant noodles twice a week or more is linked to cardiometabolic syndrome, increasing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

Photo from Canva

South Korea has seen a swift rise in health issues, particularly heart disease, along with a rising number of overweight adults.

These developments may result in higher mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases and escalating healthcare expenses.

WHO IS AFFECTED?

Consumption of instant noodles twice a week or more was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome in women but not in men.

The study noted that the results were more common in women, likely due to biological differences, obesity, and components of metabolic syndrome.

Varying eating habits and food reporting accuracy may also contribute to the gender gap.

Another factor could be bisphenol A (BPA), found in Styrofoam noodle packaging, which studies suggest disrupts hormonal communication, particularly estrogen.

Gender-related findings aside, the existing data show the importance of understanding the foods consumed, noting that many people eat instant noodles without being aware of the potential health risks.

This study may serve as a basis for future research on the health effects of instant noodle consumption, especially since Filipinos have a knack for eating cheap and accessible food.

When you choose to cook pancit canton for a midnight snack, remember that your dietary choices affect your health outcomes.

After all, it’s better to be safe than suffer from cardiometabolic conditions, Sugboanons!

The Future of the Catholic Church Amid Pope Francis’ Health Concerns

Thoughts and prayers bounce against the walls of the Catholic Church with the recent updates on the supreme pontiff.

Pope Francis, the 88-year-old leader of the Catholic Church, is revealed to be hospitalized at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic due to bilateral pneumonia and a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection.

The Vatican confirmed that a CT scan revealed pneumonia in both lungs, necessitating targeted drug therapy.

Here is what we know so far after he was initially admitted last Friday for diagnostic tests and treatment for bronchitis.

Understanding Bilateral Pneumonia

Bilateral pneumonia, also referred to as double pneumonia, occurs when both lungs are infected, leading to inflammation and fluid accumulation in the air sacs.

This condition is particularly dangerous for elderly individuals, as weakened immune systems make fighting infections more challenging. Common symptoms include fever, cough, chills, and difficulty breathing.

Dr. Maor Sauler, a pulmonary and critical care specialist at Yale University, noted that while bacterial pneumonia is often treated with antibiotics, viral pneumonia requires antiviral medication and symptom management.

Given Pope Francis’ advanced age and history of respiratory issues, his ability to recover is a primary concern.

Getting to Know Polymicrobial Respiratory Tract Infection

Meanwhile, a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection means multiple types of bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites are present in the lungs simultaneously.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that such infections are more complex to treat, requiring a tailored antibiotic regimen that may take days to weeks to fully clear.

Because of this, the Pope may be on a combination of medications to address different aspects of the infection and prevent further complications.

The Severity of the Pope’s Condition

Pope Francis has faced previous respiratory challenges, including pneumonia and bronchitis.

Additionally, he lost part of his right lung in 1957 due to an infection, further complicating his ability to recover from severe respiratory illnesses.

His recent medical history includes a three-day hospitalization in March 2023 for bronchitis and a 10-day hospital stay in July 2021 due to an intestinal issue that required surgery.

Given these preexisting conditions, medical experts warn that infections in already-compromised lungs can be difficult to manage.

The Vatican reported that while Francis remains in stable condition and has no fever, his medical team has ordered complete rest to aid recovery.

Despite this, he has continued to check in on global affairs, including reaching out to parishioners in Gaza.

Expected Treatment and Recovery Time

Typically, antibiotic treatments for pneumonia last between several days to two weeks. In cases like Pope Francis’, additional medications—such as antivirals, steroids, and supportive respiratory treatments—might be necessary.

Oxygen therapy and intravenous fluids are often used to stabilize severe cases, while chest physiotherapy can help clear fluid buildup in the lungs.

The primary focus now is on monitoring whether the Pope’s condition improves or deteriorates despite treatment.

The Future of the Catholic Church

The Vatican has announced the cancellation of several of Pope Francis’ public events, including the Jubilee of Deacons Mass on February 23 and his weekly general audience.

Doctors will continue to evaluate his response to treatment in the coming days, watching for any signs of respiratory failure or sepsis, both of which are risks for elderly pneumonia patients.

Meanwhile, concerns about his health have led to speculation about his successor.

While any baptized Catholic male can be elected pope, the role is typically filled by a cardinal.
