Holy Week Movie Marathon: Films to Watch this Lenten Season

This Holy Week, gather the family and get ready to tear-up, laugh, and be inspired in a cinematic journey that celebrates faith, reflection, and miracles!

Journey to Bethlehem

This is one of the newest movies inspired by the story of the holy family. It follows Mary (Fiona Palomo) and Joseph’s (Milo Manheim) story from the day they met, the challenges of Joseph as he learned of Mary’s pregnancy, the struggles of the Antipater (Joel Smallbone) and King Herod (Antonio Banderas), and up to Christmas Day when Christ was born. It is a musical masterpiece with songs such as “We Become We” about the marriage of Joseph and Mary, “Good To Be King” focusing on King Herod and Antipater, and “The Ultimate Deception” which topped the iTunes music during its release in 2023.

The Young Messiah

After watching the Journey to Bethlehem, it’s time for the story of Jesus (Adam Greaves-Neal) as a 7-year old kid in The Young Messiah. From Egypt to Nazareth, the plot explores the childhood of Jesus and follows his miracles and natural curiosity that leads him to places as he digs deeper into his understanding of his purpose and the world.

Son of God

One of the most heart-wrenching movies about Jesus Christ (Diogo Morgado) is “Son of God”. The plot focuses on him growing into an adult and embracing the Gospel Truth. From miracles to betrayal, this gripping portrayal of the Messiah’s journey will leave a lasting impression on viewers of all ages.

The Passion of the Christ

Based on the New Testament, The Passion of the Christ is one of the go-to movies that Filipinos watch during the Lenten season, especially on Good Friday before the clock strikes 3’oclock in the afternoon. This is because the story focuses on the events directly leading to the crucifixion of Jesus (Jim Caviezel) and the seven last words. With raw intensity and honesty, this powerful film invites viewers to witness the ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s salvation.

Prince of Egypt

Now for a lighter movie after the dramatic and painful “Son of God”, the “Prince of Egypt” would be the best choice to conclude your Holy Week marathon, especially with kids in the household. It is a retelling of the Book of Exodus focusing on Moses’s discovery about his roots and his journey to free his people. The hit song “When You Believe” is from the movie which highlights the faith of Moses and his people.

So, dim the lights, grab some popcorn, and immerse yourself in these timeless stories of faith, hope, and redemption. Let the magic of cinema ignite your spirit and strengthen your bond with loved ones this Holy Week!
