From Cebu to the World: Meet the Phenomenal Singers Who Are Proud Sugboanons!

When it comes to exceptional singing talents, guess who comes up to the minds of the world? Yep, us Filipinos!

From the incomparable vocals of Lea Salonga to the performances of Arnel Pineda and the timeless melodies of Jose Marie Chan, our country has produced musical legends appreciated around the world. But the spotlight doesn’t end there—here in Cebu, our Sugboanon talents are rising to join the ranks of these famed artists. With voices that resonate with passion and skill, our local talents are set to make their mark on the international music scene. So let’s celebrate World Voice Day by upholding the rich musical heritage of the Philippines and our talented Sugboanons:

1. Max Surban

Hailed as the “King of Visayan Songs,” Max Surban is loved by many because of his novelty compositions and ballads such as “Discoral”, “Kuradang,” and “Manok ni San Pedro,” which later became the inspiration for a Visayan television series. Now at age 84, Max Surban continues to do gigs around the country and the world.

2. Karencita

An award-winning recording artist and actress, Karencita rose to fame after her song “Cebuana” became a Philippine phenomenon. With over 28 million views on YouTube, Karencita became a pop sensation because of her lively and LSS-inducing songs that embrace the culture of Sugboanons and Filipinos.

3. Janine Berdin

After winning one of the most prestigious singing competitions in the Philippines known as the “Tawag Nang Tanghalan”, Janine Berdin became a household name for RNB and rock ballads. Her success led her to sign a contract with Star Music who helped in recording her first single “Biyaya.”

4. Juan Karlos Labajo

Born and raised in Consolacion, Cebu, Juan Karlos Labajo a.k.a JK, is one of the top soul and RNB singers in the latest generation. His songs “Buwan” and “Ere,” hit the top charts in the Philippines. He won the All-Around Artist & Frontman Recognition Award during the 13th PMPC Star Awards for Music in 2022.

5. Sheryn Regis

Dubbed as the “Crystal Voice of Asia”, Sheryn Regis is known for songs with high-belts and powerful notes. Her stardom began when she won as first-runner up in the Philippine competition “Star In A Million,” after she flawlessly performed “Come In Out Of the Rain” during the grand finals.

6. Vina Morales

A graduate of Bogo Central School and a former member of the Saint Vincent Ferrer Parish Church choir, Vina Morales is famed for her ballads such as “Pangako” and “Hindi Ko Kaya”. She also was the very first Filipino to perform at the New York International Music Festival held at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
