Smart Ukay-Ukay Tips to Thrift Like a Thrift God

0

Shopping at ukay-ukay stores is like going into a treasure hunt where you can find unique and cool items at great prices. Whether you’re new to thrifting or a pro, having a plan can help you save and get more items.

Things to Prep

Here are some tips to help you when you go thrift shopping:

Clear Perspective

Decide what you’re looking for, whether it’s a specific outfit or just exploring. This will help you focus on quality or quantity. Having a goal, or maybe a Pinterest lookbook can make your ukay-ukay adventure easier when flipping through items on and off the rack.

Large Bag

Ukay-ukay stores are filled with hidden treasures, so a big bag is essential, especially if you plan to purchase many items. And to be a responsible shopper, opt for reusable shopping bags.

Wear a Comfortable Attire

Choose comfortable clothing like leggings and shirts for easy trying-on of items. Don’t forget to bring alcohol for disinfecting and wear your face mask to avoid dust allergies.

Cash

Most UKAY-UKAY stores still prefer cash transactions over digital banks, so it’s safer to bring cash and coins with you.

Things to Do

Plan Your Ukay-Ukay Approach

Survey the store quickly and decide which section to start with. Signs may indicate styles or prices, making your search more efficient.

Stay Focused

Stick to your original plan and avoid distractions unless they match your goals.

Thoroughly Inspect Items

Check items carefully for any damage or defects, even while managing your expectations. You’d want to avoid spending more to fix the damages than being able to save on your next fashion haul.

Negotiate Prices

Don’t hesitate to bargain, especially if purchasing multiple items. Vendors may be willing to lower prices when you ask politely.

With these tips, you’re all set for your next ukay-ukay adventure. Remember to stay focused, check items carefully and have fun thrifting!

#FanTalk: Here Are Signs Of A Toxic Fandom

Raise your lightstick if you’re part of a fandom!

Photo from Freepik

Fandoms are communities of fans who support a particular person, group, show, book, or other forms of entertainment. While most fandoms are positive and supportive, some can be toxic.

Here are the common signs of a TOXIC FANDOM.

Bullying

This happens when fans are mean or rude to others who like different things or have different opinions. They might send hurtful messages online or make fun of others in person.

Excluding

Some fans believe that only certain people can be true fans. They might say that others aren’t real fans because they don’t know enough about the show, movie, or book, or because they like different parts of it.

Demanding

These fans feel that creators should always do what they want. If the creator makes something they don’t like, they get very angry and might even send mean messages to them.

Stalking

This is when fans follow or invade the private lives of creators, actors, or other fans. They might try to find out where they live, constantly send messages, or try to meet them in private places without being invited.

Can’t Take Criticisms

Some fans can’t handle hearing anything negative about their favorite show, movie, or book. They get very upset and might attack anyone who says something bad about it. These fans refuse to see any flaws in what they love. They believe it’s perfect and won’t listen to anyone who points out problems or suggests improvements.

Over Positive

This is when fans won’t allow negative talk about their fandom. They might shut down conversations or attack people who try to discuss any issues or problems.

Forgets Boundaries

Some fans don’t respect the personal space of limit set by other. They might send too many messages, try to meet or demand too much

Lying

These fans spread false information to control what people think. They might make up stories or twist the truth to make other fans look bad

Fighting with Other Fans

Toxic fans often create unnecessary fights with fans of other shows, movies, or books. They might say mean things, start arguments, or try to prove that their favorite thing is better.

Recognizing these signs can help your fandom be more welcoming to the other fans. And if you know a toxic fandom, maybe it’s time to call them out; comment their group names in the comments below!

Shorter Route to MCIA

Traveling to Mactan-Cebu International Airport can be grueling sometimes, especially if it is already in the rush hour. However, a planned construction of a bridge might remedy this problem.

Last Thursday, July 11, 2024, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard ‘Ahong’ Chan disclosed in his speech in the Tourism Dialogue held in Shangri-La Mactan that the city is set to begin constructing an expressway aiming to reduce the travel time going to Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

Lapu-Lapu Expressway

Mayor Chan further disclosed in his speech that the bridge will be named Lapu-Lapu Expressway. Further announcing that the signing of the memorandum of understanding will be done after the week Tourism Dialogue took place.

“By next week, we will be signing the memorandum of understanding with the proponent PMI and the new partner, which is the Manny Pangilinan group. After the signing next week, we will immediately begin the project.”

Mayor Junard ‘Ahong’ Chan

The memorandum will be signed along with Premium Megastructures Inc. and a new partner, the MVP Group of Companies. As of now, the layout of the LLEX is still under finalization. The bridge will aim to connect the Pilipog Bridge to MCIA.

The bridge will have its starting point in Barangay Babag 2, and will be passing through the following Lapu-Lapu sites:

Mactan Economic Zone – Mactan Aviation Road – Barangays Pajac – Buaya – Bankal – Ibo

The bridge will then have its exit point in Pusok.

— The construction of the bridge will surely be a huge benefit for many Cebuano people, especially when they are running late to their flight schedules. Additionally, this will also help lessen the road congestion of Lapu-Lapu roads.

Into the Woods: A Natural Spring in Malabuyoc — Aranzana Natural Spring

The south of Cebu is mostly well-known for its collection of numerous waterfalls and white sand shorelines.

Image contributed by Philma Marie Latayada

However, unbeknownst to many, it is also home for quite a number of springs like Obong Spring in Dalaguete and Guadalupe Mabugnao Mainit Hot Spring National Park in Carcar. Nevertheless, a relatively hidden location in the south also cradles a breathtaking natural beauty.

The Town of Malabuyoc

In the south of Cebu, 125 kilometers away from the heart of the Metro, sits the rather small town of Malabuyoc. The town is relatively known for its crystal clear beaches, breathtaking waterfalls and lush green forests.

A Spring Among the Woods

Among the towering trees of the Malabuyoc forests lies a hidden wonder that is waiting to be discovered by adventurous souls. Aranza Natural Springs is a collection of springs sitting in the lush green forests of Barangay Aranzana, Malabuyoc.

Image contributed by Philma Marie Latayada

These springs flow straight towards the rivers of Barangay Aranzana, while some of the springs flow to small pools which are artificially created by the locals in the area. Apparently, the freshwater from the spring is one of the main sources of drinking water by the locals!

HOW TO GET THERE?

Exact Location: J8WP+V2R, Malabuyoc, Cebu

  • By Car: Navigate via Waze or Google Maps and pin the location “Aranzana Natural Spring.” Find the town’s sole Western Union Money Transfer location. That building is directly next to a road. Once you notice a fork, continue driving for a minimum of one minute. Take a right turn and continue driving until you come to a large river. However, you must leave your vehicle at the coconut forest near the spring.

By Commute: Ride a bus in Cebu South Bus Terminal going to Malabuyoc. Then ask the driver or conductor to drop you off at Western Union. A road going to the spring is just beside the establishment. From there, ask the locals for proper directions heading to the place.

World Snake Day: Why You Should Hug A Snake

Pet ba nimo kay snake? I hug na kay World Snake Day ron! Pero kung si bes ang snake, aw ihug pud kay make your enemies closer man daw.

Image from National Geographic Channel

World Snake Day is celebrated every year on July 16th to help people learn more about snakes and appreciate them. While hugging a snake might sound strange or scary, there are good reasons to give it a try and at least get close to one.

Overcoming Fear

Image from National Geographic Channel

Many people are scared of snakes because of myths and stories. Hugging snakes or simply being near can help you see that they are not. As scary as you think. You can learn about their behavior and see that they are interesting animals.

Mother Nature Appreciation

Image from National Geographic Channel

Snakes are important for keeping nature balanced. They eat pests and help control animal populations. By learning about snakes, you can better understand the role they play in nature and why they are important.

Unique Feeling

Hugging a snake offers a special feeling. Snakes have smooth, cool scales that feel nice to touch. Holding a snake can be calming because they move slowly and gently.

How to Safely Hug a Snake

If you ever get the chance to hug a snake, here are some safety tips:

  • Choose a calm, non-venomous snake with a professional’s help.
  • Approach slowly and gently so the snake doesn’t get scared.
  • Support the snake’s body to make it feel safe.
  • Avoid quick movements and loud noises to keep the snake calm.

World Snake Day is a great chance to learn more about snakes and change how you feel about them. So, Sugboanons, hug that python now!

#TheSugboanon: Francis Mendres, The Barefooted Pajama Runner

A man who runs barefooted, not just for himself, but also for his advocacy. Let’s get to know the barefooted “Pajama Runner” of Cordova!

Who Is Francis Mendres?

He wore the outfit of Andres Bonifacio during the Independence Day Run in Cebu this year, and he even had a partner with a Dr. Jose Rizal costume running alongside him. However, outside of being a renowned costumed runner, Francis Mendres is also a loving father and husband and a resident of Cordova who advocates for cancer and mental health awareness. Why? Well, because of a sudden change in his life.

Plot Twist: Take Care of Your Health

When we called Francis for the interview, he was ecstatic to accept it and shared how much he longed to have a platform to share the importance of taking care of one’s health, especially in time for Philippine Nutrition Month.

Turns out, Francis’s peaceful life in his hometown shot a plot twist when his health began to decline. Dealing with severe and recurring acid reflux, and sooner paired with high-blood pressure, he found himself in an anxiety-inducing situation. To make matters worse, his wife was diagnosed with cancer and experiencing a postpartum disorder, plunging their lives into an even greater challenge.

However, with their unwavering faith, Francis and his family chose to surrender to God and reconnect with nature to pave their lives towards healing. They started with a shift in dietary habits which involved reducing their reliance on the typical Filipino rice-heavy diet, opting instead for meals rich in greens and wholesome ingredients.

Naa guy times nga maglaway na ko makakita ug lettuce sa merkado kay mao namay among kinaon; presko nga gulay.

Francis M. a.k.a “Pajama Runner”

Through these dietary adjustments, Francis not only witnessed a remarkable improvement in his own health but also ensured his family embraced a healthier lifestyle. This shift was particularly important in supporting his wife and children.

Today, Francis continues to advocate for the transformative power of nature and balanced nutrition, proving that sometimes, the simplest changes can lead to big improvements in health and overall well-being.

Photo from Francis Mendres Official Facebook Page

“Di ka kailangan mugasto ug dako, kana ra gung mga barato or in-season nga mga gulay, pwede na na,” he said adding to it the value of also consulting with vegans and vegetarians. Although Francis is not on a full veggie diet, he did emphasize on the difference in his body and mind when he eats greens.

The Barefooted Runner’s Journey to becoming the “Pajama Runner”

To begin choosing to be more active and healthier, you don’t need expensive gears; you just need to know yourself and that’s more than enough, believed Francis as he began his journey as a suki sa runs in Cebu.

Photo from Francis Mendres Official Facebook Page

He did not possess any expensive running shoes nor did he own pricey sports athleisure; instead, Francis let his feet hit the pavement bare and wore a pair of pajamas.

Although it looks fun, he admitted that it was beyond just wearing something out-of-the-ordinary. When we asked why, he said

Akong wife akong motivation. Ganahan ko nga makakita siya nga kuyog ko niya sa kaning sakit nga iyang giagian…

Francis M. a.k.a “Pajama Runner”

“…Di man ko maka-feel sa cancer niya, pero pina-agi sa pagtiniil ug pagdagan, ma-inspire unta nako siya nga makaya rajud.”

On his Facebook page, Francis is seen wearing a pair of Doraemon pajamas. But, just like how important it is for him to run barefooted, there is also a reason behind this choice of clothing, “Ang pajama kay pangkatog. Sa time nga nagsugod kog dagan, mao sab to around ana nga time nga na-diagnose akong wife; and, wa siyay tarung tulog sukad ato.” Those life-changing moments became Francis’s reason for him to wear pajamas in his runs; as it shows that he is embracing the sleepless nights and challenging days that he and his family have encountered because of cancer.

Photo from Francis Mendres Official Facebook Page

Sa akong runs kay mutawag jud ko dayun sa akong wife inig abot nako sa finish line. Kay ipakita nako niya nga kaya ra. Bisag wa sad koy tog, kaya ra.

Francis M. a.k.a “Pajama Runner”

Amidst his busy schedule at work, his sidelines, and the weekly runs he registered for, he still emphasized the significance of keeping up with his advocacy towards cancer awareness, not only for his wife but also for everyone who’s in the same situation as him. According to Francis, he holds on to this verse of faith,

Tapat ang Diyos, at hindi niya ipapahintulot na kayo’y subukin nang higit sa inyong makakaya.

1 MGA TAGA-CORINTO 10:13

Future Plans of the Barefooted “Pajama Runner”

The farthest that the Pajama Runner was able to run was 32K, which is only 10 KM less than a full run. And he completed that barefooted as well!

For Francis, he makes sure to listen to his body when doing his runs, so, for this year, he plans on slowly easing himself towards completing a full run by 2025, “Apil na sa akong plans pero hinay-hinay lang sa. Nya puhon kay muapil na kog ultra marathon.”

We also asked Francis what he can suggest to those aspiring to take on the same barefooted path as him and he shared the value of staying active, going out, and getting some needed sun. “Sa generation karun, murag nabalewala ang sports tungod sa social media, tungod sa laag laag, mao nang prone na kaayo ta sa anxiety ug mental health issues,” said Francis. He also added,

Francis is one of the inspiring individuals whom we want to tell the story of. He is proof that having a passion and advocacy is more than enough to try out new hobbies; and even better if you’re making yourself healthier and more well-rounded as a result of it.
