What You See From the Top of Osmeña Peak Isn’t Just Mountains

Beyond the Peaks: What Osmeña’s Summit Truly Reveals

Osmeña Peak, known to avid hikers as it is short and beginner-friendly, takes up to 15-30 minutes from the jump-off point. It stands tall at 1,013 meters high above sea level, making it the highest point in Cebu.

At the Top

The mountain provides a breathtaking view over the western shore and the rocky interior of Cebu. Even Moalboal, Badian, and occasionally the islands of Negros and Bohol are visible in clear weather. Additionally, you may observe the ragged hill formations of sharply pointed, grouped hills that have a more dramatic, rugged texture, just like the Chocolate Hills of Bohol. A 360-degree panorama of the ocean, agricultural valleys, and many groups of isolated settlements tucked away between the hills will greet you. The summit is especially renowned for its breathtaking views during dawn and sunset, when the peaks are covered in a magnificent display of brilliant orange and purple hues.

Atmosphere

The peak offers a cool and windy atmosphere with breathtaking views of rolling hills and neighboring islands. The weather may be unpredictable; high winds are frequently seen at the peak, and fog and rain are frequent occurrences. The trek is typically regarded as easy and appropriate for beginners, despite the possibility of difficult circumstances. The peak is largely exposed, with no shade or shelters, so hikers should bring and prepare for the direct sun and strong winds.

You Can Do This!

In addition to trekking to the top, you may camp overnight for a small fee of Php 50.00 and wake up to the soothing sound of songbirds and foggy hills. It is the perfect location to fly drones and capture the breathtaking ridgelines, vast landscapes, and dreamy atmosphere. There is also an entrance fee of Php 150.00, which includes a mandatory guide.

DAI PAI DONG BRINGS HONG KONG’S CLAYPOT CRAVINGS TO CEBU

Bringing the soul of Hong Kong’s street stalls to Cebu, one sizzling claypot at a time.

It starts with a sizzle, followed by the rich aroma of smoke and spice. Then comes the star, a steaming claypot filled with tender meat, crisp-bottom rice, and warmth you can taste.

Photos by Dai Pai Dong

Welcome to Dai Pai Dong, where every bowl tells a story, and every bite takes you to the neon-lit streets of Hong Kong, without ever leaving Cebu.

A Bite of Hong Kong, in the Heart of Cebu

Dai Pai Dong isn’t your usual Chinese food joint. It’s a culinary tribute to Hong Kong’s most iconic food culture, and the dai pai dong, or street food stalls, where locals gather for honest, flavorful, soul-hugging meals.

In Cebu, the brand recreates that experience with a “no-frills” approach. There are no gimmicks, no distractions, just street-style dishes that hit all the right notes, warm, savory, and nostalgic.

The Dish That Started It All: Claypot Rice

Photos by Dai Pai Dong

The undisputed star? Claypot Rice. A slow-cooked masterpiece, this dish is a symphony of texture and taste. Imagine perfectly steamed rice at the bottom of a sizzling clay pot, soaking up the juices of tender marinated meats. As it cooks, the bottom layer crisps into a golden crust, giving you that irresistible crunch with every spoonful. It’s smoky. It’s steamy. It’s irresistibly good. And Dai Pai Dong nails it. Every time.

Must-Try Claypots That Keep People Coming Back

Here’s what fans can’t get enough of:

• Pork Claypot Rice

Marinated pork spareribs melt into the rice alongside Chinese sausage, bok choy, and mushrooms. The flavor is deep, savory, and juicy that creating a harmonious blend of textures and tastes.

• Chicken Claypot Rice

Juicy chicken fillet paired with Chinese sausage and drizzled with a sauce that seeps into every grain of rice. Comfort food in its purest form.

• Combination Claypot Rice

Chicken feet, pork spareribs, and chicken fillet, all in one pot? Yes, please. It’s a medley of flavors and textures that makes each bite a mini adventure.

Why Is It Different? And Why Does That Matter?

In a city where trends come and go, Dai Pai Dong sticks to what matters: tradition, flavor, and quality. It’s not just about selling food. It’s about sharing an experience that feels familiar, even if it’s your first time.

Authentic claypot rice isn’t easy to perfect. But here? It’s done the right way, with slow cooking, seasoned pots, and meats that are marinated to the bone.

No shortcuts. No substitutions. Just that pure, smoky magic you can only get from a real claypot.

Hidden along the trail lies another kind of journey—one that leads downward. Lumanoy Cave demands a different kind of courage with its narrow opening of the cave mouth and the slippery steps on your way down. While no recent formal explorations have been documented, the cave remains accessible to the public as part of the Torre Peak trek.

Let’s Rock n’ Form: Malingin Rock In Liloan Gaining Smash

These rocks sparked a love for geology that I didn’t know I had.

Photo from Google Map

Standing raw, rugged, and a beautiful wonder of Cebu’s diverse geological landscape, the Rock Formations of Liloan’s Cliffs are located in Barangay Mulao, Liloan, Cebu. The area has been inhabited and known to locals for centuries, with its breathtaking features, such as beaches, cliffs, and caves, being part of the community’s landscape and home long before it became a tourist spot. The stunning formation has been a part of the local communities for over a century, with cliffs, caves, and beaches that serve as a landmark and a source of livelihood for the locals long before it gained popularity among visitors.

‘Arc’ You Seeing This Too?

One of its notable formations is the Stone Arc, also known as the Malingin Rocks, an arc standing on two rocks, inspired by the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. However, there’s no official naming or documented folklore associated with it, but it’s a fun saying that people discuss and take an interest in. For mountaineers and trekking enthusiasts, this hidden gem awaits you! This wonder is a favorite among photographers and geologists, offering a great backdrop and different formations against the water and sky.  For those seeking adventure and immersion in nature, this may be perfect for you! For those unsure of where to turn, this is a haven for you!

Where The Rocks Slay, You Slay Your Way

The cliff is a hidden gem waiting to be explored by people, especially for trekkers, mountaineers, and those who enjoy outdoor activities. The terrain provides a challenging trek for hikers. At the same time, some of the surrounding beaches and caves offer opportunities for swimming, jumping, and spelunking, which is perfect if you are looking for an adrenaline rush to your mind or a peaceful escape to nature, as anyone here can have anything all at once.

Stop Over For A Second

Beyond Mulao, the town of Liloan offers a variety to explore. One of these places was founded as a parish in 1845 and was already known for its scenic coastal areas long before it was formally recognized as a town. A historic church, San Fernando El Rey Parish, showcases Spanish-era architecture and was used as a shelter during World War II, adding a historical dimension to your visit. It is now home to mesmerizing destinations, including various resorts around the area where you can stay, relax, and enjoy yourself with their accommodations. Liloan itself is rich in history and culture, with sites such as the wartime limestone caves in Barangay San Vicente and the historic San Fernando El Rey Parish, adding depth to each visit.

How To Get There

Exact Location: Mulao, Liloan, Cebu

  • By Car: If you’re traveling by car, you can easily reach the site using navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze by simply entering “Mulao Rock Formations”  as your destination. The route typically takes you through the town proper of Liloan and up to the upland barangays via well-paved and rough roads.
  • By Commute: Take a jeepney or bus bound for Liloan from Cebu City (SM City or North Bus Terminal). Upon reaching the Liloan Public Market or town proper, ride a habal-habal (motorbike taxi) and ask the driver to bring you to Barangay Mulao. Travel time may vary depending on the road condition, but the adventure and views are well worth the trip.

As Liloan continues to develop its tourism potential, these rock formations and cliffs stand out as a must-visit destination for those who appreciate nature’s rugged artistry and the thrill of exploration. Whether you want to go alone, with a group of friends, or bond with your family as you seek an adventure, this place promises an experience that you will never forget.

Did Lapu Lapu Curse Us?

What if honoring a hero accidentally awakened the wrath of one?

The scent in the wind of Opon, Lapu-Lapu, is more than just the rush of the seabreeze; it carries legends and a curse that the locals believed once before. In the waves of the Mactan Channel that hit the shore, a 20-meter Bronze statue of Datu Lapu-Lapu, the first Filipino hero to repel foreign invaders on the island, stands. Its original bow and arrow, long replaced by its stories, are still in the memories of the elders. But beyond its fascinating structure and memorial lies a tale that questions its authenticity, whether it was a good idea that evokes goosebumps in visitors and locals every time they hear this tale.

Face Off Gone Wrong

The creation of the statue was intended to commemorate the historic victory of Lapu-Lapu over Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and serve as a symbol of national pride, reminding us of the sacrifices made by our local heroes. Yet from the moment it was finished, strange things started to happen, and something feels off and wrong. The bow of Lapu-Lapu was not aimed at the foreign invaders, but it was shot straight at the town’s center of governance. The stand of the warriors, with its back turned to the sea, led his people to triumph for freedom. Primarily, a warrior never turns his back on his enemy, as they murmur, which was no mere artistic insight but a grave insult to his spirit.  They believe that the statue’s posture has awakened something relentless in the air as a presence that refuses to be ignored.

Photo from Google Maps

Fatalities Within the Wreckage

A strange occurrence began the moment the statue was completed. The officials involved in its construction encountered various challenges. The Opon Municipal President, Rito de la Serna, who had overseen the construction and completion of the monument, suddenly passed away months later. He is also a local politician who dismissed critics and successors; moreover, a local politician who rejected critics and successors has died in mysterious ways, alongside Simeon Amodia and his cousin Gregorio de la Serna. Is it a coincidence? Maybe, but in a land where folklore and reality collide with each other, the people in Mactan know better than to test the spirit’s patience.

Photo from Canva

The Soul of What Remains

The attempt to correct the statue’s orientation is met with an eerie resistance. When Mayor Arturo Radaza proposed relocating the monument to face the sea in 2007, the project was unexpectedly stalled, despite having allocated funds. The construction crews report some unusual events, including equipment failures, the disappearance of tools overnight, and an overwhelming sense of fear when working near the site. Whether out of fear or symbolism, this act was seen as a gesture of peace, and a way to let the spirit’s fury ease. Even though there are no new misfortunes publicly linked during the revision of the statute, the legend still lived on in hushed tones.

Warrior Wakes the Wise Ones

The Visayan community believes that modern worries are often connected to ancestral spirits and sacred places. In pre-colonial times, people thought that the souls of warriors protected their battlefields forever, and the sea was honored as the main home of their ancestral god. Some community members worry that certain modern statues may be disrespectful because they overlook both historical significance and the sea’s importance. This concern ties back to legends about disturbed ancestral grounds, which are thought to cause bad luck. Stories about events like the controversial digging up of ancient burial sites near Cordova highlight the need to respect cultural heritage and sacred spaces.

Photo from Canva

The statue stands as a mysterious yet popular attraction during the day, drawing tourists while locals maintain a wary distance after sunset. Although the original statue has been replaced, its stories linger in the memories of the elders. The eerie tales surrounding the deaths of certain officials may have transformed into legend, yet the statue remains a link to the past. It invites us to look beyond mere myth and to confront the complex, often unsettling ways we remember our heroes.

True history, as it turns out, is not solely found in textbooks but is embedded in the whispered fears, beliefs, and warnings that are shared through generations. The idea of a curse may not be rooted in the supernatural, but rather in our tendency to overlook the deeper truths.

The new system, integrated within the eGovPH mobile app, is a component of the government’s initiative to digitize its services. It’s not merely focused on enhancing convenience; it also aims to transform the way individuals interact with government agencies entirely.

How Does It Work?

The ODLRS is integrated into the eGovPH app, which serves as a one-stop platform for government services available on both iOS and Android. Through this app, drivers can conveniently upload their license details, take a compliant selfie, and complete a medical exam via teleconsultation. Additionally, they can participate in the mandatory five-hour Online Driver’s Enhancement Program (ODEP) and make payments online. Once all requirements are met, users will receive a digital license directly within the app. Furthermore, there are plans to have the physical license delivered to users in select pilot areas soon.

It’s a full-service experience — no need to visit an LTO branch unless required.

Just a heads up before you start the process.

Before you start using the system, ensure that your license is either valid or has expired for less than two years. Additionally, it’s important to confirm that you have no unsettled violations. Lastly, you will need to complete the online medical exam and obtain your ODEP certificate within the app.

You’ll also need a stable internet connection and a valid government-issued ID for verification.

How to renew your driver’s license?

To renew your driver’s license using the eGovPH app, start by downloading the app and registering for an account. Once you’re set up, navigate to the “LTO Services” section and select Online Driver’s License Renewal. You’ll need to upload images of your current license, showing both the front and back. The app will then prompt you to take a selfie, guiding you through the process to ensure it meets the required standards.

Get Your Medical Certificate

Next, you can book an accredited medical exam through the app’s in-app teleconsult feature. After that, finish the Online Digital Exam Process (ODEP), keeping in mind that you can pause and resume at your convenience. When it comes to payment, you’ll have various digital payment options available to settle the renewal fee.

With the implementation of the ODLRS, renewing a license in the Philippines has become remarkably more efficient. You can say goodbye to the hassle of commuting to various offices, the annoyance of dealing with fixers, and the countless hours wasted in long lines. This innovative system transforms what was once a stressful experience into a quick and streamlined process, making it a truly modern solution for today’s drivers.

Is Solea Mactan Worth It? We Checked In—Here’s the Real Tea

Is Solea really paradise? Well, we went and here’s what we think…

It was a Friday, and we figured it was about time we took a break from the whole corporate grind. So, we went looking for a place where we could relax but still have a bit of fun. After scrolling through the internet (as usual), we stumbled upon that familiar blue logo of Solea and thought—hmmm, this could be it. So, we booked a room and packed up for the weekend.

It did feel like a private island, with tons of pools!

The resort’s layout makes it feel like you’ve escaped far away, even though it’s just within Mactan. It’s wide and spacious, with lots of pools, open areas, and ocean views that scream “vacay mode!” from the moment you step in. You’ll find cozy loungers by the pool, modern tropical interiors in their rooms, and wide-open views of the sea that are IG-worthy in every corner.

If you’re the type who can’t get enough of pools, Solea Mactan Resort is basically your dream come true. They don’t just have one or two; they have eight pools and one inflatable waterpark.

But, if you’re up for something a little more active, Solea’s got a floating inflatable waterpark filled with obstacle courses out in the sea that’s open from 9 AM to 6 PM. It’s for those who want a bit of a challenge and perfect if you want to shake things up after lounging in the pool.

To make the most of your stay, it helps to know the pool hours, too. The beach is open from 8 AM to 5 PM, while the main infinity pool runs from 7 AM to 9 PM. Other pools like the Nina Pool, Karen Pool, and Kath Pool are available from 9 AM to 6 PM. For a splash of fun, the Aqua Park is open from 10 AM to 7 PM, and Aqua Play from 9 AM to 7 PM. Richie Pool gives you longer hours on weekends (7 AM to 9 PM), while Rose Pool opens later on weekdays but extends up to 9 PM on weekends. Whatever your swimming style is, Solea has a pool for it.

We wanted to just stay in and binge-watch whatever…

Working a 9-to-5 in the corporate world does a number on your back, brain, and just about every inch of your body; so when we finally opened the door to our room at Solea, we just wanted to melt into the bed. It was so hard to get back up because everything in the room screamed, “Stay. Rest. Don’t move.”

The space was modern and comfy, with floor-to-ceiling windows that gave us a relaxing view of the pools and the beautiful seas beyond. The interiors were soft and neutral with white sheets, earthy tones, cozy lighting; the kind that makes you want to stay in bed all day with a romcom on screen or your playlist on loop. Even the bathroom had that sleek hotel vibe we all love, with care kits ready in case you forgot your essentials. Honestly? It’s the kind of room that feels like a reward after all the deadlines.

If you’re looking to rejuvenate and recharge, SOLEA’s also got you covered with the Nouveau Spa and the Health Club gym. Prefer to stay in? They also offer in-room spa services, so you can chill without even leaving your bed.

And guess what? There’s more coming soon as they’re leveling up the vacation experience with new spots like Mozza, a Smash Room, a Recreation Center, and even more arcade games.

Food Trip at Earth and Salt & Sky

When it comes to food, Solea Mactan doesn’t play around. Their in-house buffet restaurant, Earth, has a solid mix of local and international favorites that’ll keep your taste buds busy all day long. Mornings are made better with crispy bacon, fluffy pancakes, and an omelette station that’s always a hit. For lunch and dinner, you’ll find savory dishes like grilled seafood, juicy lechon belly, flavorful pasta, and even veggie options for the more health-conscious.

But if you’re more into just chillin’ with cocktails on hand, then the Salt & Sky Rooftop Lounge, the Cuckoo Pool Bar, and the Sandy Point Beach Bar are the options to take. The rooftop lounge gives you a gorgeous panoramic view of the sea and sky; perfect for watching the sunsets of Mactan. They’ve got bar chow, refreshing mocktails, and signature cocktails. It’s the kind of spot where you can de-stress, toast to the weekend, or just chesmes with friends after a full day of swimming.

The Verdict

We’re definitely going back—no questions asked. It was a weekend well spent, and one that honestly felt like a breath of fresh air. Solea Mactan Resort nails that sweet spot between luxury and accessibility. You don’t need a plane ticket or a passport to feel like you’ve escaped the city; just a quick drive and you’re suddenly in a place that has it all. From their spacious pools and comfy rooms to the great food and stunning sea views, this resort really delivers the sulit experience. It’s no wonder it’s a favorite among both locals and tourists. Solea’s got your back, without breaking the bank, Sugboanons!
