Moalboal’s Rocky Gateway

0

Panagsama Boulder Beach in Moalboal, Cebu might surprise first-time visitors expecting soft, powdery sand. Instead, this shoreline is covered in smooth rocks and coral pieces, earning it the name “Boulder Beach.” But there’s a story behind the stones.

In 1984, a powerful typhoon struck Moalboal and swept away much of Panagsama’s sandy beach. What remained was a rocky shoreline, shaped by nature and time. Though it may not be ideal for lounging, these boulders now mark the start of one of the best underwater experiences in the Philippines.

No Sand, No Problem

Just a few steps from shore, the seafloor drops into a colorful coral wall full of marine life. Thousands of sardines swim here year-round, along with turtles and vibrant reef fish. Whether you’re snorkeling or diving, the waters of Panagsama offer an unforgettable glimpse into Moalboal’s rich underwater world.

There are small dive shops, cafés, and resorts along the coast, perfect for resting after a swim. So while Panagsama may not have soft sand, it offers something far more unique: a rugged beach with a wild history and a sea full of wonders.

How To Get There?

Location: Panagsama Beach, Moalboal, Cebu

By Car: Navigate Panagsama Beach, Moalboal via Waze or Google Maps.

By Commute: From Cebu City, go to the South Bus Terminal and take a bus bound for Moalboal (Ceres or Librando). Travel time is around 3 hours; fare is ₱170–₱200. Once you reach Moalboal town proper, ride a tricycle or habal-habal to Panagsama Beach (₱20–₱50). The beach is about 10–15 minutes from the town center. No entrance fee is required.

Fall for Free at Panas Falls

No entrance fees. No crowds. Just nature at its best.

In the upland village of Barangay Panas, Panas Falls is one of Consolacion’s lesser-known treasures. It’s the kind of place you won’t find in packaged tours or heavily filtered Instagram posts but that’s exactly the appeal.

Here, the water flows gently over layered rock, forming shallow pools perfect for a quick dip or a slow afternoon of doing absolutely nothing. It’s not a towering cascade, but it has something else: peace. No fences, no cement paths, and most importantly, no entrance fee. Just a footpath, a short hike, and a few minutes of stillness waiting for you at the end.

Things to Keep in Mind

Before heading to Panas Falls, keep in mind that the place is completely natural and unmanaged, there are no stores, cottages, or lifeguards, so be sure to bring your own food and water. The water is refreshingly cold, even on hot days, and the area stays quiet, especially on weekdays. Since no one’s there to clean up, take responsibility for your trash and leave the place as clean as you found it.

How To Get There?

Location: Barangay Panas, Consolacion, Cebu

By Private Car: From Cebu City, drive north to Consolacion.Once you reach SM Consolacion, head inland toward Barangay Panas. The road going up is partly paved but narrow in some spots. Be ready for rough patches. You can park near the start of the foot trail and walk the rest of the way.

By Commute: Ride a jeep or bus to SM Consolacion. From there, take a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) and ask to be dropped off at Panas Falls. The trail isn’t long, but wear proper shoes—it can get slippery, especially after rain.

Panas Falls isn’t about spectacle. It’s about stillness. It’s for people who don’t mind getting a bit of mud on their shoes for the sake of fresh air, cold water, and a quiet hour away from the city.

If you’re in Consolacion or nearby, and you feel like being somewhere with no noise but the water and wind, try Panas Falls. You don’t need a plan. Just go.

Wellness Meets Nature

Outdoor yoga is experiencing a global resurgence, and the Philippines is no exception. From beaches to mountaintops, parks to heritage sites, yogis are reclaiming nature as their studio. Outdoor yoga removes barriers like studio fees and space limitations. Parks, beaches, and view decks become open-air sanctuaries for movement and mindfulness. Platforms like TikTok and Facebook have helped collectives like Dawata Wellness and YogaHub Cebu organize events, share schedules, and build inclusive yoga communities.

Why It’s Booming

Practicing in nature reduces stress, anxiety, and depression by tapping into biophilia which is our connection to the natural world. The fresh air improves lung function and cardiovascular health; sunlight boosts vitamin D and serotonin levels. In natural settings, it enhances focus, emotional resilience, and creative thinking. The activity of outdoor yoga fosters social connection and shared experience, especially in group settings like retreats or public classes

THERE’S HISTORY IN EVERY TOUCH—HERE’S WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE PAMPERED AT TENDERBODY

There’s something heartwarming about places that carry stories. Some cafés were born from passion, and some resorts started with a dream. But Tenderbody Therapeutic Massage & Spa? This one was born out of love, literally.

This isn’t your usual spa story. The Tenderbody branch in Raintree used to be the Sunday afternoon tambayan of the current owner’s parents. It was their go-to date spot; massage first, maybe dinner after. The Tamiya branch in Lapu-Lapu City was the couple’s go-to for their weekday dates. Years later, after the mother passed away, the father bought the spa out of pure sentimentality. “This is where our love grew,” he must’ve thought. He kept the name, Tenderbody, a mouthful but heartfelt, and turned it into something more. When he too passed away, the responsibility (and the legacy) was passed on to their child, who now continues to run the business with the same love it was built on.

Now with three branches, Tamiya and two in Raintree Mall, Tenderbody isn’t just a spa. It’s a space filled with stories, family ties, and a lot of warm oil.

Changing the Spa Narrative, One Honest Massage at a Time

Let’s address the elephant in the room. When people hear “spa” in Cebu, there’s unfortunately still that lingering assumption that services go beyond what’s on the menu. Tenderbody Therapeutic Massage & Spa wants to end that.

This is a clean spa. No extras, no shady business, just good old-fashioned hilot and healing hands. All therapists are certified with NC-II training. More than that, they’re mothers, breadwinners, grandmothers, and even survivors of abuse. Each massage is given not just with skill but with strength, respect, and dignity.

“It’s not easy to touch other people’s bodies, especially when it’s sore. It’s not for everyone. And we want to show everyone that Cebu has clean spas”

“I was never an entrepreneur,” she added. “I just decided to continue this for the love my parents had.” And that love is felt in every aspect of Tenderbody Therapeutic Massage & Spa, from the way the therapists are respected and empowered, to how returning customers feel like old friends. It’s not just a business; it’s a living tribute to love, healing, and human connection.

Must-Try Services

Whether you’re a first-timer or a regular, here are our personal picks and client faves:

Tenderbody Signature Massage (2 hours)

A blend of Swedish massage, pressure point work, and stretching. It’s their gold standard.

Swedish Massage (best-seller!)

Oil-based with long, relaxing strokes. Perfect for muscle knots and tired souls.

Pinoy Hilot

Old-school, warm oil massage just like how our lola’s used to do it by heating an oil in the old-fashioned way and massaging it onto our backs.

Hot Stone Massage

Great for “frozen shoulders” and those who just want to melt into bed.

Foot Massage (Raintree branch best-seller)

Targets pressure points. Ideal after a long day of walking or standing.

Aromatherapy Massage (Tamiya’s favorite)

Perfect for bodybuilders, athletes, and anyone who needs serious muscle work.

Ventosa

A combination of cupping therapy and a full body massage—relaxing and detoxifying.

Other services also include facials, paraffin treatments, and waxing (Raintree branch exclusive). Products used are from NU Skin Manila, and they only use oils and tools they trust.

Something New: Gift Certificates and Loyalty Cards

As of June 1, 2025, Tenderbody launched Gift Certificates, the greatest gift of relaxation for friends and family who might not usually treat themselves. These GCs are valid for 6 months and serve as a lovely introduction to the spa.

They also have a Loyalty Card now! For regulars, it’s a fun way to earn a free massage. Every visit gets you closer to that reward and lets you know that loyalty does pay off.

We Got Massaged, Ventosa’d, and Almost Didn’t Want to Leave

We came to Tenderbody Therapeutic Massage & Spa out of curiosity, and left feeling like warm, happy marshmallows. That’s the best way to describe the experience, light, relaxed, and stress-free.

Joshua, our social media manager, booked a foot massage and almost didn’t make it past the first 20 minutes as he got *that* relaxed. He had to fight off sleep just to enjoy the full session. Grace, our head of sales, wasn’t as resistant. She chose the hot stone massage and completely knocked out mid-session. She woke up dazed, dreamy, and swore she’s never felt that kind of calm in weeks.

Cody, our ever-game team manager, tried the head and full-body massage. He was giggling half the time as it turns out he’s a little ticklish, but even he admitted he’d do it again in a heartbeat. As for me, I went all in with the ventosa massage, a combination of cupping therapy and full-body massage. Every cup, every glide, every release of pressure felt like someone carefully untying the knots in my soul, and inside every muscle on my back!

What made it all better was the space itself. The moment you step in, you’re greeted with the soothing scent of peppermint, dim lighting, calm music, and a peaceful energy that makes your brain stop racing. It’s the kind of place where your shoulders automatically drop, your phone stays in your bag, and your only task is to breathe and let go.

We’ve been to quite a few massage spots around Cebu, but Tenderbody stands out. There’s no gimmick here, just sincere service, skilled hands, and an atmosphere built for healing. It’s a spa with heart, and you can genuinely feel it from the moment you lie down.

So yes, we got massaged, ventosa’d, and pampered. If you’re overdue for a good reset, trust us, this is the place to go.

Binuthan Cave Is What Boom Feels Like

Deep in the northern highlands of Cebu lies a destination that remains largely untouched by mainstream tourism

Binuthan Cave, located in Sitio Morga, Barangay Bonbon, within the quiet municipality of Tabogon. Known for its unique cave-waterfall formation, underground passageways, and physically demanding terrain, Binuthan Cave offers a raw, immersive adventure experience that is ideal for experienced hikers and thrill-seekers.

The Trail to Binuthan Cave

Upon arriving in Sitio Morga, visitors are encouraged to hire a local guide due to the unmarked and rugged terrain. The trail to the cave begins behind the local residences and leads through vegetable farms, banana plantations, and flower fields, many of which serve as the community’s main source of livelihood.

Photo from Google Maps

The trek to Binuthan Cave typically takes one hour. The trail is mostly downhill and becomes increasingly steep, muddy, and slippery as hikers approach the cave. While the hike may seem manageable at first, the final portion involves ascending and descending wet boulders, and crossing shallow streams, making it important to wear appropriate footwear and bring only essential items.

Cave Features and Conditions

Binuthan Cave is notable for a waterfall that flows directly from its mouth, cascading down large rock formations into a natural pool below. Entry into the cave requires swimming approximately 10 meters across water that reaches depths of up to 12 meters.

Screengrab from The Explorer Vlog

Inside, the cave’s passage narrows considerably. Visitors must pull themselves through tight rock corridors where swimming is no longer possible. Instead, progress is made by climbing along jagged stone surfaces, with parts of the path consisting of chest-deep to knee-deep water.

The cave is a fascinating natural wonder, showcasing crystalline rock formations and layers of minerals that captivate the eye. As you navigate its depths, the knife-like textures of the stones demand slow and careful movement, ensuring safety on this uneven terrain. Hidden within the cave are surprise sinkholes and vertical drops, some plunging over five meters deep, adding an element of thrill to the exploration.

Photo from Canva

Throughout the cave, stunning natural pools reflect the light, creating mesmerizing surfaces that dance across varying geological structures, each turn revealing yet another layer of beauty.

Screengrab from The Explorer Vlog

Because of the risks and complexity involved, proper physical fitness is essential. The full cave exploration can last up to two hours, depending on group size and water conditions. Due to the cave’s darkness, limited mobility, and constant water exposure, taking photos inside can be difficult and is not recommended without waterproof equipment.

Environmental Note

Binuthan Cave remains undeveloped and free from commercialization. Visitors are reminded to practice Leave No Trace principles and respect the natural environment and local community. The area is maintained solely by the efforts of residents who provide guiding services on request.

Screengrab from The Explorer Vlog

Binuthan Cava Is The Bomb That You’re Looking For

Binuthan Cave is not a destination for casual tourists, it is for those seeking real exploration, physical challenge, and a firsthand encounter with Cebu’s raw natural beauty. Hidden beyond paved roads and far from commercial resorts, it offers one of the island’s most authentic and unforgettable cave adventures.

How To Get There?

Exact Location: Sitio Morga, Barangay Bonbon, Tabogon, Cebu, Philippines

  • By Commute: Binuthan Cave is situated in the mountainous interior of Tabogon, approximately three to four hours from Cebu City. To reach the site, travelers must first take a Route 04H jeepney from Lahug Market. While the 04H line serves several upland barangays, only a few trips go as far as Bonbon — passengers are advised to confirm the destination with the driver before boarding. The fare typically costs ₱25. The jeepney route ends near a water refilling station, which serves as the last stop. From there, motorcycle taxis (habal-habal) can be hired to take visitors to Sitio Morga, the jump-off point for the cave trek. The motorcycle ride takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes and features scenic views of Tabogon’s rural terrain.
  • By Car: Navigate to Bonbon Barangay Hall and hire a motorcycle taxi (habal-habal) or trek up to the entrance of the cave

With its underground waters, towering boulders, and remarkable geological features, Binuthan Cave is a testament to the natural wonders still waiting to be discovered in the heart of Cebu.

Two Islands, One Journey: Cebu’s Carnaza & Caohagan

Hidden gems in the northern part of Cebu?

Beyond the renown of Bantayan and Malapascua and far from Cebu’s busy peninsula are two islands that have their own stories to tell. One is a turtle-shaped island sculpted by stone and wind, while the other is a little paradise swarming with coral life and a sense of community. Despite their modest size, Carnaza and Caohagan provide a mix of privacy and intimate coastline settings that make them must-see destinations for every island tourist.

What Are Carnaza & Caohagan

Carnaza

The windy island of Carnaza is home to white sand beaches, secluded coves, and limestone cliffs. With ragged rock formations and expansive scenery from the top of hills, the terrain is wild and untamed. With solar-powered houses, glamping tents, and a community that depends heavily on fishing and ecotourism, the island’s simplicity makes it so charm

Attractions like Carnaza Eco Park, the main resort’s wooden cabins, and seaside helipad, mix perfectly with the surroundings. For stargazing, snorkeling, and sunset viewing, Skull Cove, Twin Beach, and Kailina Beach provide breathtaking views and peaceful seclusion.

Caohagan

With its pristine white sand, glistening waves, and thriving marine sanctuary, Caohagan is an island straight out of a picture. It is well-known for its lively seafood market, where residents sell freshly caught fish cooked on-site, and its sandbar, which forms at low tide. About 694 people live on the island, and many of them get their power from solar panels.

From swimming and snorkeling to mingling with amiable locals and enjoying grilled seafood by the seaside, Cebu is a vibrant place despite its small size. A popular destination on Mactan island-hopping cruises, it provides a tranquil haven only thirty minutes from the mainland.

What to See & Do

Carnaza

The island’s primary resort, Carnaza Eco Park, has glamping tents, cottages, and access to Skull Cove, a cave that is rumored to contain the bones of a couple who perished from leprosy. It also has a helipad with expansive views. Another option for cultural immersion is to visit Twin Beach (Liog-Liog), which consists of two white sand beaches that face one another close to a local hamlet. The “neck” formation represents connectedness and is more than just a geological feature.

The twin beaches, according to locals, symbolize two towns that were formerly split apart by topography but brought together by common fishing grounds. Kailina Beach: A local-run sunset retreat that costs ₱20 to enter. This beach, which is run by Kuya Eddie, is more than just a panoramic location; it’s a gathering place for residents to share stories and watch the stars. Some tourists call it “therapeutic,” both emotionally and visually. Rock Formations: Sharp limestone cliffs that are perfect for light scrambling and photography.

Caohagan

Sandbar & Marine Sanctuary: pristine seas perfect for snorkeling; white sand appears at low tide. Caohagan’s sandbar abruptly rises to the surface at low tide, forming a makeshift bridge to neighboring reefs. You may use poetry to examine this visual metaphor for impermanence.

Seafood Market: For a price, locals sell fresh seafood, including fish, lobsters, and crabs, which are frequently prepared on-site.

Community Life: The 694 people of Caohagan depend on fishing and solar energy, but tourism is changing their means of subsistence.

Today, some families combine tradition with adaptation by operating homestays or providing guides. Eco Vibes in the island’s simplicity is what makes it so appealing, yet opinions vary. Some refer to it as “inorganic” because of commercialization and fencing. Others commend its grassroots environmental initiatives and tenacity following Odette.

Alegria’s efforts to expand its tourism industry beyond organic farming and canyoneering include the Salay Cave. It’s a secret gem that spelunkers and nature lovers are gradually discovering.

What To Expect

A 30-minute stroll through bamboo forests, cornfields, and a massive balete tree awaits you after a habal-habal ride (motorcycle taxi). Headlamps are necessary because the cave is completely dark inside. Flashlights on cell phones are insufficient.

Delicate stalactites and stalagmites may be seen in the cave. To protect their growth, it is not recommended to touch them. There are no official facilities, such as bathrooms, designated paths, or an admission booth. It’s a genuine sensation of being in nature. The cave is unlabeled and well hidden. It is strongly recommended to hire a guide.

How To Get There?

Exact Location: Alegria, Cebu

  • By Commute: Start at Cebu South Bus Terminal. Ride a Ceres Liner bus bound for Bato via Barili. Tell the conductor to drop you off at Sangi Junction in Alegria. From Sangi Junction, hire a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) to take you to the village near Salay Cave. From the village, it’s a 30-minute hike through bamboo groves, cornfields, and a giant balete tree. The trail is relatively easy but can feel eerie due to the dense jungle and insect sounds
  • By Car: Drive south from Cebu City via the Barili route. Follow signs to Alegria town proper, then head toward Sangi Junction. From there, continue to the village trailhead (ask locals for directions or hire a guide). Parking may be limited near the trail, so plan accordingly.
