Iloilo: 2 Mpox Cases

Health authorities have confirmed two Mpox cases in Iloilo, one in Iloilo Province and another in Iloilo City—marking the province’s first official detection of the virus.

In the province, the patient reportedly has no recent travel history, suggesting that local transmission is already happening. Nine close contacts have been identified and are now under home isolation and monitoring.

Meanwhile, Iloilo City has also logged one case, with four others under observation. The Department of Health (DOH) is still determining if these suspected cases are linked to the confirmed patient.

Cebu: 1 Deceased and 1 Suspected

Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas confirmed on Thursday, May 29, that the city has recorded its first case of Mpox. In a public statement posted on social media, the mayor clarified that while the patient had tested positive for Mpox, the cause of death was not due to the virus itself. According to Gullas, the individual succumbed to complications brought on by pre-existing medical conditions unrelated to the infection.

Meanwhile, Mandaue City is also on alert as local health officials investigate suspected cases. Dr. Debra Catulong, chief of the Mandaue City Health Office, shared that one patient presenting with lesions, a common symptom of Mpox, was immediately placed in isolation.

Here’s why BSP Executives are paid so high

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) executives once again dominated the list of highest-paid government officials in 2024, according to the Commission on Audit’s (COA) latest Report on Salaries and Allowances (ROSA). Leading the pack is BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr., who earned a total of ₱47.97 million, marking a significant increase from his ₱35.48 million earnings in 2023.

The top 10 highest-paid government officials were all from the BSP, with Deputy Governor Chuchi Fonacier earning ₱30.39 million and Deputy Governor Francisco Dakila Jr. receiving ₱28.82 million.

Why Are BSP Executives Paid So Much?

  • Allowances: ₱14.94 million
  • Discretionary and Miscellaneous Expenses: ₱2.24 million

Additionally, Governor Remolona served on the governing boards of 10 other government financial institutions and corporations, including the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp (PDIC) and the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), without receiving additional compensation for these roles.

Our country’s music scene has just lost one of its most iconic voices. Freddie Aguilar, the legendary folk musician best known for the timeless anthem Anak, passed away on May 27, 2025 due to multiple organ complications.

Born on February 5, 1953, Ferdinand Pascual Aguilar, a.k.a “Ka Freddie,” hit the spotlight of Filipino fame in the 1970s with a style that was raw, emotional, and nationalistic. He was known for his soulful songs and signature long hair. He wasn’t just a singer, he was a great storyteller, protester, patriot, and a man whose music echoed the struggles and triumphs of the Filipino spirit.

The Song That Touched the World: “Anak”

There is no remembering Freddie without remembering Anak. Released in 1978, this ballad was about a child’s regret and a parent’s unconditional love that could be applied to several generations, even until today. Because of the meaning of the song, it was appreciated beyond the Philippines and had been translated into over 20 languages and covered by countless artists. Even in his later years, he continued to perform, collaborate, and serve as an inspiration to both established artists and new musicians.
