Every April 9, the country pauses for Araw ng Kagitingan—Day of Valor—to honor the Filipino and American soldiers who fought during World War II, especially those who endured the Bataan Death March.

Speeches are given, wreaths are laid, and social media platforms are flooded with hashtags of bravery. But beyond the ceremonial rituals, we must ask: Do we still need to commemorate it?

The answer isn’t as simple as “yes” or “no.”

Remembering History or Repeating It?

Araw ng Kagitingan is rooted in our collective memory of resistance—of standing firm against a brutal occupation.

The Bataan Death March was not only a military defeat but also a human tragedy. Around 76,000 soldiers were forced to march over 100 kilometers under deadly conditions. Thousands died. And yet, what made it into textbooks was often just the American narrative, with Filipino valor playing second fiddle.

Commemorating Araw ng Kagitingan should not only be about mourning or romanticizing sacrifice. It must be a day of reckoning—a time to reflect on the structural reasons why Filipinos have continuously been caught in wars not of their making.

The Philippines was a colony under the U.S. when World War II erupted in the Pacific. We weren’t defending our own independent republic. But, we were defending an empire that never truly treated us as equals, even until the present imperialist stage.

So when we say “gallantry,” whose gallantry are we truly celebrating?

Valor Without Liberation?

Underneath the pageantry lies a contradiction. Every year, we honor the bravery of those who resisted fascism, yet we continue to live in a system that breeds injustice, inequality, and neocolonial control.

Many of the ideals that the WWII veterans died for—freedom, sovereignty, justice—remain unfulfilled. In fact, our history since the war has been marked by foreign military presence, economic dependence, and elite domination of politics.

From the post-war reconstruction that enriched a few families to the Marcos dictatorship that distorted nationalism for authoritarian ends, the promise of liberation has always been postponed.

The real question is: how do we honor courage without questioning the system that demanded so much of it?

Araw ng Kagitingan Today: Commemoration as Resistance

If we are to keep observing Araw ng Kagitingan, then let it be more than just a government holiday or a moment for hollow platitudes.

Let it be a reminder of unfinished revolutions. Let it spark critical conversation about nationalism, militarization, and the real heroes among us—those who continue to resist oppression in all forms.

From the Lumad defenders in Mindanao, to workers striking for fair wages, to activists red-tagged for speaking truth—they are the modern-day bearers of “kagitingan.”

Their battles may not be on war-torn islands, but in courtrooms, on picket lines, and in community organizing.

So, Do We Still Need It?

Yes—but not in the way we’ve been taught. Araw ng Kagitingan must evolve. It should be less about glorifying war and more about interrogating why we keep fighting. Less about memorizing dates, more about mobilizing people.

Binignit

Every Lenten Season, the Carbon Public Market gets all crowded with shoppers looking for ingredients to cook Binignit. This traditional dish has humble beginnings, originating from farmers who, as devout Catholics, relied on it to stay nourished during Holy Week. Filled with hearty carbs, Binignit is more than just a dish – it’s a Visayan culinary delight perfect for satisfying our cravings, be it served as a snack or as a full meal.

INGREDIENTS

5 cups coconut milk

3 cups water

½ cup white rice

¼ cup pilit / glutinous rice

¼ cup landang / palm flour jelly balls

2 cups ube, cubed

2 cups sweet potato, cubed

2 Saba bananas, sliced

1 cup sago, cooked

1 cup nangka / jackfruit strips

1 cup coconut cream

½ cup brown sugar

HOW TO COOK Binignit

Step 1: Over medium heat, combine the coconut milk and water in a pot and let it simmer gently to avoid curdling.

Step 2: Add both white and pilit, and landang to cook, and stir every 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 3: Add the ube and sweet potato and stir every 15 minutes, until tender.

Step 4: Add the sago, bananas, nangka, cream, and sugar, and continue to cook until all ingredients are tender and the liquid becomes thick and creamy.

Step 5: Serve hot.

Budbud Pilit

Rectangular and sticky are two descriptions of the simple yet delectable Budbud Pilit, also known as Suman. It’s served alone or with either the ever-tasty sikwate or chocolate drink, or with a sprinkle of sugar.

INGREDIENTS

4 cups pilit / glutinous rice

4 cups fresh coconut milk

1 cup white sugar

1⁄4 teaspoon table salt

young banana leaves, steamed lightly to make it pliable & cut to rectangular 8*6-inch pieces

HOW TO MAKE BUDBUD PILIT

Step 1: Over medium heat, add the coconut milk with the sugar and salt; stir until thoroughly combined.

Step 2: Add the pilit and bring it to a simmer in low heat until the liquid is gone.

Step 3: Remove the cooked pilit rice from the stove and set it aside to cool.

Step 4: Scoop at least 2 tablespoons of the cooked rice into the banana leaf and wrap it up by folding the leaf together.

Step 5: Steam the wrapped rice for 45 minutes or until it’s fully cooked.

Biko

Making Biko is somehow similar to cooking the Budbud Pilit, but they differ in color, solely because Biko uses brown sugar instead of white. So, you can follow the cooking instructions of Budbud Pilit, and just replace the type of sugar; also, instead of wrapping the rice in individual banana leaves, just use one wide leaf and place the entire thing on a serving pot.

And to make your Biko even more special, add the latik! This is the Visayan term for caramelized sugar. You can use brown sugar and then drizzle it on top of your Biko before serving. Some prefer to serve the Biko cold, while others prefer it warm; it’s all up to you!

Viernes Dolores is one of the oldest devotions to the Mater Dolorosa. On the Sixth Friday of Lent, women wearing black dresses and veils pray the rosary. They also recite verses of the Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows.

In other places in the Philippines, Viernes Dolores is celebrated with a procession of Mary. The image of Mary contains a heart pierced with seven swords. Moreover, the seven swords depict Mary’s seven sorrows.

3. Senakulo

The Senakulo is a street play about the Passion of Christ. The event usually takes place in Bulacan, Rizal, and Pampanga. Senakulo depicts the violence Jesus experienced from his persecutors.

4. Linggo ng Palaspas

If you are Catholic, you might have palaspas in your house. The palaspas, or woven coconut leaves, signify the palm and olive branches waved when Jesus arrived at Jerusalem.

5. Prusisyon

During Lenten Season, different processions take place. These processions are often done during Holy Week. During Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday, the procession of the Way to Calvary is done.

During the Way to Calvary, the image of the Fallen Chris is accompanied by the saints who were there when Jesus walked to his death.

6. Visita Iglesia

Visita Iglesia is the act of visiting seven churches. During Visita Iglesia, the Way of the Cross is prayed on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. It is known as one of the most common way to remember the Passion of Christ.

7. Penitencia

Penitencia is a penance where participants beat their bodies through lashing and self-inflicted flagellation. The participants are bare up to the waist. Their faces are covered with hoods, and they wear crowns made of leaves.

The penitents start praying at a cemetery and initially wound themselves.

8. Paglilibing

The Paglilibing is one of the longest processions during Holy Week. During this time, an image of the Dead Christ is situated in a casket. The Paglilibing is observed on Good Friday after the Lord’s Passion and Veneration of the Cross.

9. Abstinence and Fasting

Another way to celebrate Lent is Abstinence and Fasting. Fasting is when individuals eat one complete meal and two smaller meals. People exempted from fasting are those who are sick, pregnant, and those who work extensively.

On the other hand, abstinence is the act of “doing without.” For example, observing abstinence means abstaining from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent.

These are only some of the things that Filipinos observe during the Lenten Season. In addition, of course, each part of the Philippines may have its unique way of celebrating. But, despite the differences, Catholics still have one goal, which is to remember the sacrifices of Christ.

BY COMMUTE: From the Plaza Independencia Cebu, you can walk to the SRP by following where the sea is at and using the path laid for bicycle riders on the left-most corner of the road. Further into your stroll, you can find a little pavilion where you can stay at.

Kan-Irag Camp

The best part about the city of Cebu is that it is surrounded by the sea and mountains, meaning you can also go up for a hike or settle in at your preferred camping grounds. For beginners and leisure campers, Mt. Kan-Irag is the household name.

Hiking to the camping ground may take 20 to 30 minutes, but fret not because the way to it is not too sloped; unless it rains, always be prepared for the ever-changing weather conditions.

What Is Padagat?

In older times, after a week of mourning and reflection, Easter Sunday served as a joyous celebration. This is highlighted by the Sugat–the pre-dawn re-enactment of the meeting between the risen Christ and the Virgin Mary.
