Newtown School of Excellence: Providing Cebuano Kids Holistic, Quality Education

For five years now, Mommy Cherryliz Oyao has been entrusting the Newtown School of Excellence, Inc. (NSEI) to handle her unico hijo’s education out of all the schools in Lapu-Lapu City.

Oyao’s son is actually among the very first batch of students welcomed by NSEI when the school first opened in 2018. When the new school year starts this August, Oyao’s son will be a Grade 4 student.

A well-rounded learning institution

Located inside the 30-hectare The Mactan Newtown, a live-work-play-learn township by property giant Megaworld that also has its own beach, NSEI offers programs from Nursery up to Grade 9 levels and boasts facilities that complement children’s academic and extracurricular pursuits. 

The school features two buildings with a total of 16 classrooms that can accommodate up to 35 students each; a modern library, school clinic, General Science laboratory, computer laboratory, TLE (Technology and Livelihood Education) classroom, playground, and a multipurpose gymnasium.

“For me, compared to other schools here in Lapu-Lapu City, NSEI has the best facilities the kids could ever have by far. The school makes sure to provide the kids with different avenues where they can enhance their skills not only academically but also, for example, when it comes to sports,” OYAO SAID.

Oyao’s decision to send her son to NSEI proves to be a great one, as her child has grown to love the school just as much as she does.

“He always tells me that he has fun in school and he learns a lot. ‘I love the school because it’s big and nice,’ he once told me. I am also sure that he has already grown attached to his classmates because he has been there since he was in Nursery,” OYAO SAID.

The Newtown School of Excellence is currently accepting enrollees for the school year 2023-2024, which begins in August. This will mark a return to full face-to-face learning set-up after three years of online and hybrid classes due to the pandemic.

Big dreams for NSEI

Sarza, who brings with him decades of teaching experience to NSEI, hopes for the educational institution to soon offer the senior high school program so it becomes a truly K to 12 school.

“NSEI is a relatively new private basic educational institution in the area. Despite this, NSEI has already permeated among its learners the values of excellence, hard work, integrity, and social responsibility. NSEI is values-driven, and adaptable to the current trend of teaching modalities,” HE ADDED.

He also expressed his wish for the students to not just excel in school, but be great contributors to society when they grow up.

“I would like to motivate our learners to be at their best not only academically but also as contributors to society in their own unique ways. I want these kids to learn, and to make these learnings of good use individually and societally,”

Imagine getting a phone call from someone claiming your child has been abducted. For their release, kidnappers will demand a ransom. You’re scared and unsure of what to do.

As old as humanity itself, scams are still alive and well today. Scammers can now operate without coming face-to-face with potential victims. 

A scam in which criminals call a victim and falsely claim that a loved one has been kidnapped is known as virtual kidnapping. In exchange for the victim’s release, the criminals demand a ransom payment.

As scam tactics advance, virtual kidnapping schemes are becoming more frequent. Criminals may employ voice cloning technology to generate realistic audio recordings of the victim’s loved one, which they will play to the victim to make the scam appear more credible.

You can take the following steps to safeguard yourself from virtual kidnapping scams:

  • Be wary of unsolicited phone calls or emails demanding ransom payments. Refrain from responding if you receive a similar call or email. Hang up the phone or delete the email instead.
  • Personal information should not be given to someone you do not know and trust. Your name, address, phone number, and social security number are all included.
  • Be cautious with what you post on social media. Criminals can target you for a virtual kidnapping scam using the information you post on social media.
  • Call the authorities immediately if you receive a call or email that you suspect is a virtual kidnapping scam.
  • Keep your computer security up to date. This includes having a firewall and antivirus software installed.
  • Be careful about what links you click on. If you receive a link in an email or text message, do not click on it unless you are sure it is legitimate.

If you receive a phone call demanding payment of a ransom for a kidnapped victim, keep the following in mind:

  • Make an effort to slow down the scenario. Request to talk directly with the victim. “How do I know my loved one is okay?.”
  • Use social media to call, text, or contact the alleged victim. Request that the victim return your call from his or her cell phone.
  • While on the phone with the alleged kidnappers, try calling the kidnapping victim from a different phone.
  • Repeat the caller’s request to gain time and say you’re writing. Reduce the demand or inform the caller that you need more time to meet their demands.
  • Never argue with or quarrel with the caller directly. Maintain a calm and steady tone of voice.

Have you ever seen a Philippine eagle? If you haven’t, you’re not alone. This critically endangered species is one of the most elusive birds in the world. But thanks to a recent TikTok video, people worldwide are finally getting to see this unique creature up close.

Lohwana Halaq, an animal keeper at Davao City’s Philippine Eagle Foundation, recently went viral on TikTok for her video comparing the real Philippine eagle to the one represented on the new P1,000 bill.

Halaq is seen in the video holding the bill next to Sinag, the youngest Philippine eagle at the center. She then compares the two, highlighting similarities such as their golden brown feathers, white head, and sharp talons.

More than 10,000 people have shared Halaq’s video, which has received over 1.8 million views. Despite being the Philippines’ national bird, several individuals in the comments expressed their amazement at how little they knew about the Philippine eagle.

From my experience working with these beautiful animals I can truthfully say that it shocks me much our own Filipino citizens do not know this eagle exists or what it even looks like. Despite its high profile status in media, culture and government. I’ve had many guest interactions in  which local Filipino visitors come up to ask me: “ma”am, nasaan ang Philippine agila?” , “ma,am where can I find the Philippine eagle?” … I am literally holding the Philippine Eagle on my arm…. I look at them look at my eagle, Sinag, and look back at them and point out “You are staring at the Philippine Eagle”… I have conservations with Filipinos abroad in Canada and I explain to them that I work and live in the Philippines as an Animal Keeper and I help breed the critically endangered Philippine eagle species. Many of them comment: “I did not know we have this eagle in the Philippines”…. my response usually is “did you even open your Filipino passport?” As the Philippine Eagle is also featured in the Filipino Governing passport. It is clear that awareness plays a crucial role in species conservation from local to international recognitions. Education is key. According to Halaq, she made the video to encourage people to learn more about the Philippine eagle, an endangered species, and raise public awareness of it. She added that spreading awareness of the need to preserve the Philippine eagle through education is essential for species conservation.

Only about 500 Philippine eagles are alive in the wild, making it a severely endangered species. The Philippine eagle is endangered mainly by habitat loss, hunting, and electrocution.

Action must be taken to safeguard the Philippine eagle’s habitat, crack down on illegal hunting, and educate people about the significance of this species if we are to prevent its extinction.

The video uploaded by Halaq is an excellent representation of how social media can be utilized to spread awareness of significant environmental issues. Halaq has aided in educating people about the Philippine eagle and encouraging them to take action to save this endangered species by sharing her video with her followers.

French stuntman Remi Lucidi Falls to His Death from the 68th Floor of a Hong Kong Skyscraper.

It is a sad day for the stunt community as a French Instagram stunt star falls to death from the 68th floor of a skyscraper in Hong Kong. The man was identified as Remi Lucidi, who was only 30. 

Lucidi apparently lost his balance and fell from the 721-foot Tregunter Tower, as the South China Morning Post reported. Reports say the stuntman told the guard he was visiting a friend on the 40th floor. As shown on the Surveillance camera, Lucidi exited the elevator on the 49th floor and made his way to the staircase.

Unfortunately, Lucidi got trapped outside the building. He saw a maid and knocked on the window to call the maid’s attention. The woman then called the police.

The event could have been a good “rescue story”; however, Lucidi had a mishap and fell. The stuntstar’s body and camera were then found on a patio.
