Something big is happening again in the highlands of northern Cebu this January. A well-loved mountain trail is preparing to open its paths to trekkers and nature lovers. The announcement has sparked excitement among locals and frequent climbers alike.
The Mountain in Focus

Mt. Kapayas, also known as Torre Peak, is officially reopening for trekking activities starting January 2026. The mountain had been closed after earthquakes and a series of typhoons affected trail safety. Its return marks a fresh chapter for one of Catmon’s most visited natural attractions.
The temporary closure allowed the area to undergo a full safety assessment and environmental recovery. Local tourism officials ensured that both trails and surrounding ecosystems were given time to stabilize. This careful pause was done to protect visitors and preserve the mountain’s natural state.

What Visitors Must Do

All climbers are required to register at the Catmon Municipal Hall before any trekking activity. A mandatory orientation and waiver signing will be conducted at the Municipal Social Hall before proceeding to the jump-off area. Group size limits will be enforced to match the number of accredited guides assigned.

A Priority for Waiting Climbers

During the reopening period, priority will be given to individuals and groups whose climbs were postponed due to the earthquakes. This step ensures fairness for those who secured permits earlier. It also helps manage the flow of visitors during the initial reopening phase.
Trekkers are reminded to follow safety rules, respect trail regulations, and manage their waste properly. Responsible tourism plays a key role in keeping Mt. Kapayas open and protected. With shared effort, the mountain’s views and trails can be enjoyed for years to come.
