iOS CarPlay Hit the Road for Video Streaming While Driving

Steering meets streaming in the most terrific way. CarPlay’s got the binge, not just the maps.

In the latest update to the CarPlay upgrade, Apple is transforming in-car entertainment. They announced at WWDC 2025 that drivers and passengers will be able to stream their favorite content and videos into their vehicle using AirPlay. This update turns compatible cars into rolling on-the-go entertainment centers, perfect for road trips, ride sharing, waiting for someone to pick up, or just making the time fly.

Behind The Wheel

Introduced in 2014, the device primarily focuses on navigation, music playback, and its communication features. The lack of video support has been a notable gap in today’s media-heavy world, while these functions continue to evolve and revolutionize. Apple’s cautious approach to video in cars stemmed from legitimate safety concerns about driver distraction. However, with the rise of advanced driver assistance systems and the impending arrival of fully autonomous vehicles, the company recognized the shifting landscape. The groundwork was laid with previous iOS updates that expanded AirPlay capabilities, and with the complete CarPlay redesign announced in 2022 that took over entire dashboards. Now, with iOS 19, Apple is finally ready to bring its signature video experience to the automotive environment, completing its vision for a truly comprehensive in-car ecosystem.

Tap To Stream

The new feature will work with popular streaming service platforms, such as Apple TV, Netflix, and Disney+, although these functions may vary across different apps.  Some early reports say that the system will automatically detect whether the car is in motion or parked, with some vehicles potentially offering a passenger override option. The interface design maintains Apple’s sleek and straightforward aesthetic, featuring easy-to-use playback controls and options that can be optimized for in-car use.

Binge On The Road

This upgrade offers several exciting benefits for users. Families can keep kids entertained on long drives, while ride-share drivers might use it to enhance the passenger experience. The wireless functionality means no messy cables, and Apple’s optimization ensures minimal lag. For electric vehicle owners charging their cars, it transforms waiting time into an enjoyable experience. The feature also hints at future possibilities, such as gaming or video conferencing, in autonomous vehicles.

Set to launch with iOS 19 later this year, video AirPlay in CarPlay represents Apple’s continued commitment to automotive innovation. While initially available in select 2025 and newer vehicle models, the feature will likely expand as more manufacturers adopt the latest CarPlay standards. This update not only enhances Apple’s ecosystem but also propels the entire automotive industry toward more connected and entertaining driving experiences.
