The Unforgiving Cancer

Over the years, Anne dedicated herself to her work in various NGOs in Talisay, Cebu, where she focused on community development and support. But in 2013, everything changed when she received a life-altering diagnosis: Stage 3 breast cancer. Faced with the reality of her condition, she encountered the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of her illness. However, cancer never made her lose her spirituality. “Keep your faith in God,” she shared.  This belief kept her going, along with a spirit of gratitude, knowing that at least it was she who had the illness and not another child who might have suffered more, “Maynalang nga sa akoa, kay daghan kaayog pwede ma-cancer, pero maygani sa akoa, dili sa bata.”

Art is my escape

In the midst of chemotherapy and uncertainty, she turned to art—not just as a hobby but as a form of therapy. Through her artworks, she’s able to express her emotions that she could not speak out loud; she released her fears and pain with every stroke of the brush and every blot of the watercolors. In 2014, while still undergoing treatment, she began painting earnestly and ended up creating around 30 pieces that became her refuge and a testament to her strength.

The right support system is very important for dealing with cancer.

Throughout her journey, Anne emphasized the importance of a solid support system. “I was encouraged to return to work to distract myself,” she shares. As an admin and finance officer in her NGO, she found purpose in helping others, which in turn helped her heal. The camaraderie and encouragement from her colleagues provided a lifeline during her darkest days.

In 2015, Anne received the incredible news: she was cancer-free. This milestone deepened her appreciation for art, which she embraced as a powerful tool for healing and self-expression. Now, she plans to give back by establishing her own organization to inspire hope and engage people in art, transforming it from a mere hobby into a meaningful escape.

This November, together with the founder, Ian Rustia, they will launch their vision for the “Lighthouse Foundation,” The Lighthouse Foundation is driven by a mission to uplift underprivileged children and students, empowering them to overcome obstacles and build brighter futures through education, mentorship, and community support. As a new organization, it is eager to grow and expand its initiatives, making a lasting difference in the lives of those it serves. By the beginning of next year, they will also open their own art studio “Arte de Café”, providing a safe space where individuals can find an escape from the challenges of everyday life and experience art as a form of therapy.

Anne Ruiz lives by a powerful mantra that shaped her life and continues to inspire her, as well as the people around:

Keep your faith in God, be kind, never lose hope, and know that everything is temporary

Breast cancer, like all forms of cancer, is a journey no one should have to navigate alone. It can cast a shadow, challenging even the strongest spirits. Anne, a beacon of hope similar to what a lighthouse is in the dark seas, bravely shares her story at art festivals and the recent “Locks of Love” event. Her message is clear: you are not alone, and there is always hope.

In her words, Anne inspires others facing similar battles, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, a light can guide us forward. And, for her, it was the support of her family and friends, and the hues of her watercolor palette that brought her peace and the light that she needed.

So, to all the warriors out there, remember that every step you take is a proof of your incredible resilience and strength. You have faced these challenges that would have discouraged many, yet you stand tall—an inspiration to everyone who knows your story.

You are deeply loved, you are incredibly strong, and you are never alone.
