#TheSugboanon: The Ice Cream Man of Starbuks

Upon the Spartan Trail, you’ll find a familiar face…

Photo and story by Josh Almonte

Long before the sun rises, while the city still sleeps and the mountains are in mist, a familiar figure begins his quiet climb up one of Cebu’s most visited hiking trails. No, he’s not just another hiker chasing the sunrise, he’s the man who brings cold, sweet joy to every tired soul on the trail.

Meet Kuya Rey

Photo and story by Josh Almonte

“Alas kwatro pa lang ng umaga, gising na ako. Umaakyat ako kasabay ng mga hikers,” Kuya Rey shares with a warm smile. “Minsan, umaabot ako hanggang tuktok ng trail. Kapag naubos na ang paninda ko, saka lang ako bababa.”

Photo and story by Josh Almonte

Carrying his humble cooler filled with ice cream, Kuya Rey climbs the same steep trails as everyone else, often in slippers or worn-out shoes. He journeys through the woods, his steps steady and familiar with the rhythm of the mountain. By the time most hikers are catching their breath at the halfway mark, he’s already found his favorite spot to set up, a perfect resting point where the cool breeze meets tired feet and growling stomachs.

And just like that, his P20 ice cream becomes a priceless moment for many.

A Dream Worth Climbing For

Photo and story by Josh Almonte

Despite the effort, the earnings are modest. “Mga 800 hanggang 900 pesos po. Minsan lampas, pero kadalasan, ganun lang,” he admits. “Sakto lang. Nakakabili pa rin ako ng bigas at ulam.”

Photo and story by Josh Almonte

But for Kuya Rey, it’s never just about the money. “Hindi lang ito tungkol sa kita. Dito ko nararamdaman na buhay pa rin ang mga pangarap,” he says.

Kita ko ang pagod sa mukha nila, pero kapag bibili sila ng ice cream ko, ay napapangiti sila.

He has become a source of joy and a quiet inspiration. A gentle reminder that simple things, like a cold treat on a hot trail, can create unexpected warmth. His presence has become part of the hiking experience itself, a moment of rest and reward.

Photo and story by Josh Almonte

When asked why he chose the mountain trails, despite the long walks and heavy loads, his answer comes with a spark of hope in his eyes as he shared that he wanted to thrive for his own family that he’s building with his partner.

Gusto kong maipakita na kahit simpleng tao lang ako, kaya kong magsikap para sa pangarap naming dalawa.

More Than Just a Vendor

Photo and story by Josh Almonte

In a world obsessed with shortcuts and success stories, Kuya Rey reminds us that there is beauty in slow climbs, in early mornings, and in honest work. He may not wear hiking gear or post selfies on summit stones, but in the eyes of many, he is a true legend of the trail.

So next time you find yourself hiking a mountain in Cebu, listen for the soft clang of a cooler and the familiar shout of “Ice cream yummy, ice cream good!”—and remember that behind every sweet scoop is a man chasing dreams, one step at a time.

What to Expect sa SMX Convention Center in Cebu

…aside sa traffic…

Cebu is stepping it up big time, and at the center of it all? The upcoming SMX Convention Center Cebu, set to be the largest privately-owned convention center in the Visayas and Mindanao. So if you’ve ever wished for more events, expos, or fancy galas without flying to Manila, this is your sign!

The new SMX Convention Center is rising right next to SM Seaside City Cebu in South Coast City, a huge seaside complex being developed by SM Prime and Ayala Land. It’s also super accessible thanks to the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX). So, you can definitely head there straight from Mactan in minutes.

What to Expect

Aside from the 52,000 square meter floor area, the convention center will also be made up of 3 levels with 4 massive halls on the ground floor. There will be multiple smaller rooms on the upper levels, great for seminars, breakout sessions, and private events. It’s also not just a standalone building as it will be connected via the “Sky Bridge” that lets you walk from it straight to SM Seaside Cebu or the future SM Seaside Arena without breaking a sweat.

Photo from SMX Convention Official Facebook Page

Once it opens, the SMX Cebu will become the capital for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions) which means more BIG events, more employment opportunities for local businesses, caterers, hotels, and performers, more tourists, and bigger celebrations.

We’ve waited long enough for a venue that matches Cebu’s growing energy, and the SMX Convention Center Cebu is exactly that. Maybe when both establishments finally open their doors, we’ll have a better space for the upcoming Sinulog festival celebrations; who knows.

Why Bitcoin Hyper Is June’s Top Crypto Presale, According to Analysts

Bitcoin Hyper ($HYPER) is quickly emerging as June’s breakout crypto presale, and the buzz is building fast. With over $555,306 already raised and growing by the hour, leading crypto analysts are calling it one of the most promising crypto launches of June 2025.

But what’s fueling this rapid momentum? Unlike many projects that piggyback off Bitcoin’s name, Bitcoin Hyper introduces something new: a true Layer 2 blockchain purpose-built to scale Bitcoin, cut down transaction costs, and finally bring usability to the world’s most valuable digital asset.

What Is Bitcoin Hyper ($HYPER)?

At its core, Bitcoin Hyper is a dedicated Layer 2 chain designed to do what Bitcoin alone has struggled to achieve—process fast, low-cost transactions without compromising decentralization.

Rather than tweaking Bitcoin from within, Bitcoin Hyper takes a fresh approach. It’s built from the ground up as a fully functional blockchain that connects to Bitcoin, helping it move beyond being just a long-term store of value.

Currently, $HYPER is available at $0.011775, the lowest price in the presale cycle. But here’s the catch: prices increase every two days, meaning early investors stand to benefit the most. With each tier, $HYPER becomes more expensive, rewarding those who move quickly.

Why $HYPER Is Gaining Momentum

Several factors are fueling the growing attention around Bitcoin Hyper:

  • It’s Bitcoin’s first dedicated Layer 2 with its own ecosystem and tokenomics.
  • The presale is structured with rising price tiers, creating strong early buying pressure.
  • The project addresses Bitcoin’s well-known limitations: slow speeds and high fees.
  • Analysts are closely watching $HYPER’s rise, comparing it to early opportunities seen in Ethereum Layer 2 projects.

In a market full of hype and recycled ideas, Bitcoin Hyper is positioning itself as a utility-first solution with real-world potential.

Bitcoin Works as a Store of Value, But That’s Not Enough

Looking For The Best Crypto Presale Before Summer? Bitcoin Hyper Could Be It - FinanceFeeds

There’s no debating Bitcoin’s success as a digital store of value. Trading at over $104,000, it has proven its strength in the face of inflation, fiat devaluation, and market uncertainty.

But Bitcoin’s day-to-day usability is still stuck in the past. High fees and long confirmation times have pushed everyday use cases to the sidelines. While Lightning Network and other scaling solutions have made incremental progress, adoption remains limited.

Bitcoin Hyper aims to change that narrative by making Bitcoin fast, cheap, and usable again.

The Bigger Vision for Bitcoin Hyper

Bitcoin Hyper doesn’t want to replace Bitcoin. It’s designed to complement it, acting as a high-speed layer where transactions can settle quickly while preserving the integrity of the Bitcoin base layer.

With native token support, scalable infrastructure, and a strong community-driven presale, $HYPER could become a key building block in the broader Bitcoin ecosystem.

Whether it’s enabling microtransactions, DeFi protocols, or everyday payments, Bitcoin Hyper is built for adoption—not just speculation.

Final Take

Bitcoin Hyper is more than just another presale, it’s a ground-floor opportunity to be part of something big, before the rest of the market catches up.

The price is still at its lowest level—but not for long. As momentum builds and the next pricing tier approaches, acting now could mean getting in before the crowd.

Explore the $HYPER presale today and be part of what could be the next major evolution in Bitcoin’s journey.

Senate Approved Free Funeral Services Act for the “Poor”

The Philippine Senate has approved Senate Bill No. 2965, known as the Free Funeral Services Act, which aims to provide free funeral services to poor families in crisis situations.

Made for the “Poor”

Families considered “poor” under this act are those whose income falls below the poverty threshold as defined by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) or who cannot meet basic needs such as food, health, education, and housing. Additionally, families in crisis situations, including those affected by calamities or disasters, are eligible. Qualified families will receive a comprehensive funeral package that covers:

  • Preparation of funeral documents
  • Embalming services
  • Interment or burial services
  • Transportation of remains
  • Cremation and inurnment services
  • Provision of a casket, urn, or venue, as applicable.

These services will be provided by accredited funeral establishments across the country. Each establishment is required to offer a uniform indigent funeral package, regardless of location.

How to Avail the Services

To access the free funeral services, the bereaved family or representative must present the following:

  1. Valid identification card of the claimant or beneficiary
  2. Death certificate issued by the hospital, city/municipal health office, or a certification from the tribal chieftain
  3. Funeral contract signed by the family representative, the funeral establishment, and an authorized Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) personnel
  4. Social case study prepared by a registered social worker

The DSWD will lead the implementation of this measure, ensuring that eligible families receive the services. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will monitor and regulate market prices of funeral services, including caskets and urns, to prevent excessive pricing.

While the Senate has approved the bill, it is currently pending in the House of Representatives. Once enacted into law, the Free Funeral Services Act will provide significant relief to poor families during times of loss.

F4 Is Reuniting in 2026—And Yes, It’s The OG Meteor Garden Boys!

Oh, baby, baby, babyyyyy…

Nagdako ba sad pud ka sa F4 era? Well, get ready to scream like it’s 2003 all over again, kay F4 is officially reuniting in 2026! Yes, Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Vanness Wu, and Ken Chu are coming back together, and we’re all suddenly 13 again, secretly watching Meteor Garden reruns on ABS-CBN after school while pretending we weren’t hopelessly in love with Dao Ming Si.

According to the latest news from Taiwanese entertainment media, the reunion will mark the 25th anniversary of Meteor Garden, the hit drama that basically raised an entire generation of Asian drama fans (a.k.a. us). While the full details haven’t been dropped yet, early reports say we can expect a reunion concert, fan meetings, and a possible mini-series or documentary.

A Quick Throwback for the Youngins in the Room

Meteor Garden premiered in 2001 and introduced us to the iconic F4, four rich, chaotic, and emotionally unavailable boys who ruled Ying De University, and our teenage hearts. The show was based on the Japanese manga Hana Yori Dango, but it was the Taiwanese adaptation that hit different here in the Philippines. The entire country literally paused every afternoon just to find out if Shan Cai would end up with Dao Ming Si or Hua Ze Lei.

Will They Come to the Philippines?

As of now, there’s no confirmed date or location for any PH leg of the reunion, but given how massive their fandom still is here, we’d bet our Meteor Garden OST that Manila (and hopefully Cebu!) will be part of the tour.

So to all the certified F4 stans who proudly wore butterfly clips, low-rise jeans, and learned Mandarin just to sing along,  this one’s for us.

LIST: Top Elected Officials of Cebu 2025

New names, same job descriptions, new tactics and strategies to lead Cebu…

After a highly anticipated and action-packed midterm election season, Cebu now welcomes a fresh batch of elected officials who will lead the province and its major cities until 2028. From surprise upsets to electoral returns, the results show a shift in public opinion, and for many, a hope for change.

So what can we expect in the next few years under their leadership?

Cebu Provincial Government

Governor: Pamela “Pam” Baricuatro (PDP-Laban)

Pam Baricuatro’s win against veteran Governor Gwen Garcia wasn’t just a political upset—it was a statement. Known for her heart-on-the-ground kind of leadership, Pam brings with her years of hands-on work through the Simply Share Foundation, a nonprofit she founded that fights hunger and helps feed kids in the Visayas. She’s also been vocal about pushing for transparency in government spending. On top of that, she’s focused on boosting support for farmers and improving healthcare across the province, two things that really hit close to home for many Cebuanos.

Vice Governor: Glenn Soco (1Cebu)

Glenn Soco is back at the Capitol, bringing with him his signature mix of business savvy and public service. As the founder of Coffee Dream, he helped put local coffee on the map while also supporting homegrown farmers. But he’s not just about business, he’s long been involved in community work, from educational drives to disaster response efforts. He’s also pushing for transparency in government, advocating for systems that let the public easily access how budgets are being used. Balik serbisyo na pud si Glenn, and this time, he’s got even bigger plans for the province.

Cebu City

Mayor: Nestor Archival Sr. (BOPK)

Nestor Archival Sr. is taking over Cebu City Hall with a vision rooted in sustainability and innovation. Known for his green advocacy, Archival built the iconic Archival Eco-House, a solar-powered, self-sufficient home that’s become a blueprint for eco-friendly living. During his time as a councilor, he earned national recognition as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Councilors of the Philippines, proving he walks the talk in public service. He’s also big on health and wellness, openly sharing his own journey toward a healthier lifestyle. With Archival now leading the city, expect greener, cleaner, and more mindful governance ahead.

Vice Mayor: Tomas Osmeña (BOPK)

Tomas Osmeña is back in the game, and if there’s one thing Cebuanos know about him, it’s that he always delivers big. His most iconic legacy? The South Road Properties (SRP), a massive 300-hectare reclamation project that transformed Cebu City’s economic landscape. But beyond infrastructure, Osmeña is known for his direct, no-frills approach to public service. He’s one of the few local officials who connected with constituents on social media and even gave out his personal mobile number (yes, really) so people could reach him directly. From pushing for 24/7 access to the city’s public library to acting on citizen feedback, Osmeña has always kept the people at the heart of his governance.

Mandaue City

Mayor: Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano (LAKAS)

Jonkie Ouano is stepping up to lead Mandaue City, carrying on his family’s political legacy with a clear focus on unity and progress. He’s hands-on when it comes to community engagement, often seen joining local events and connecting with residents to understand their needs. When it comes to city development, Jonkie pushes for better infrastructure that can boost economic growth and improve everyday life for Mandaueños. He’s also big on empowering the youth, backing programs that encourage young people to get involved in governance and community service, building a stronger, more active generation for the future.

Vice Mayor: Glenn Bercede (LAKAS)

Glenn Bercede is bringing his steady hand and commitment to fair governance in Mandaue City. As the city council presiding officer, he’s known for keeping things balanced, especially with a council made up of different political groups, making sure decisions are fair and inclusive. When disaster strikes, Glenn steps up, like when he helped coordinate relief efforts for fire victims in Sitio Paradise, Barangay Looc. Beyond crisis management, he’s also behind community projects focused on making life better for everyday Mandaueños, showing that he’s all about serving the people.

Lapu-Lapu City

Mayor: Cindi King-Chan (PFP)

Cindi King-Chan takes the mayor’s seat bringing her solid experience in tourism and public service to the forefront. She’s been a big player in promoting Lapu-Lapu City as a top global destination, putting the spotlight on local events that attract visitors from near and far. On the healthcare front, she’s pushing for a dialysis center at the city hospital that will offer free treatment to indigent patients, talk about real community care. Plus, she’s all about speeding up infrastructure development with plans to set up a dedicated Lapu-Lapu City District Engineering Office, making sure public works get done faster and better for the city’s progress.

Vice Mayor: Celsi Sitoy (PFP)

Celsi Sitoy steps into the vice mayor role with a clear focus on making legislation work for the people and improving community welfare. He’s all about pushing ordinances that drive Lapu-Lapu City’s growth and development forward. On top of that, he stays connected with constituents, listening to their concerns and promoting a government that’s open and inclusive. Education is close to his heart too; he focuses on programs that open up more opportunities for the city’s youth to learn and thrive.

Cebu’s new set of leaders brings a mix of fresh perspectives and seasoned experience, which is good for us Sugboanons. And, as they go on their respective terms, we can anticipate initiatives focused on transparency, infrastructure development, healthcare, community engagement, and even educational progress.

What to Expect at SM Seaside Arena in Cebu City

Cebu, hapit najud mahuman ang SM Seaside Arena!!!

Estimated to be completed by the end of 2025, the SM Seaside Arena will be one of the biggest indoor arenas in our very own Queen City of the South! It is the highly anticipated establishment that many are waiting for.

So what exactly can we expect from this upcoming space?

Built with Cebu in mind

The SM Seaside Arena is located inside South Coast City, a joint development of SM Prime and Ayala Land, just beside the iconic SM Seaside City Cebu. It’s super accessible thanks to the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), so whether you’re from the city or coming from Mactan, getting there won’t be a hassle.

Also, its 16,000 seats makes it the biggest indoor arena in the Visayas and Mindanao. Yes, even bigger than most Metro Manila venues. Whether you’re a Swiftie waiting for that international tour to land here or a basketball fan dreaming of seeing PBA games live, this arena will finally make those dreams possible within our city.

The arena isn’t just a concert or sporting event venue as it is a multipurpose space for everything, from expos to large conventions such as international ComicCons, Marvel expos, and even mobile or technology expos. The best part is, there is already a lineup for when the arena opens such as the FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League in 2026 and 2027, and it’s even being proposed as one of the venues for the FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup in 2025.

Connected to Everything You Need

The arena is part of a bigger ecosystem. Right next to it, the SMX Convention Center Cebu is also under construction which is a huge 3-level facility perfect for expos, weddings, and major corporate events. And to make everything easier, a Sky Bridge is being built to connect the arena directly to the SM Seaside Mall.

So yes, you can literally watch a concert, grab milk tea at the mall, and head back out without getting in your car.

The Growth of Cebu City

The SM Seaside Arena isn’t just another building, it’s a sign of growth. A sign that Cebu is ready to host the world. And honestly, it’s about time. No more flying to Manila just to watch your favorite artists or attend massive events. With this arena, we are taking center stage. So, Sugboanons, stay tuned for more updates as the opening gets closer.

Gwen Garcia Fights Back: Files Protest Over Cebu Gubernatorial Results

Just when we thought the election period’s over…

Photo from Gov. Gwen Garcia’s Official Facebook Page

Cebu’s political scene is becoming more intense as last June 3, 2025, the outgoing Governor Gwendolyn “Gwen” Garcia filed an electoral protest with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), contesting the results of the May 12 gubernatorial race.

Garcia is challenging the victory of governor-elect Pamela “Pam” Baricuatro, citing alleged irregularities in over 4,100 clustered precincts across the province.

Garcia vs. Baricuatro

An electoral protest is a process that allows a losing candidate to contest the results of a recent election. Garcia claims that technical and software issues led to votes intended for her being credited to Baricuatro. She emphasized that this move is “a sign of good faith” to the mayors and constituents of Cebu, asserting that the election results did not reflect the “honest will of the people.”

Baricuatro, who secured over 1.1 million votes compared to Garcia’s approximate 800,000, has yet to issue a personal statement. However, her legal counsel, Atty. Edmund Lao, expressed surprise at the protest, stating they have not received an official copy.

What do you think?

The filing of the protest received varied reactions online wherein some supported the movement while others questioned her claims. As the COMELEC reviews the protest, the political situation in Cebu remains. Many are watching how this development will influence the province’s governance and political dynamics.
