Along the southwest coast of Cebu, White Beach Moalboal, locally known as Basdaku, gives a long line of pale sand and clear blue waters away from the busier parts of town. The beach is also close to Moalboal’s famous marine attractions, making it a popular stop for travelers looking to combine a relaxing beach day with snorkeling and diving. Read on to find out what to do at Basdaku, how to get there, and what to prepare for your visit.

What Makes Basdaku Special
Basdaku means “big sand” in Cebuano, a fitting name for the beach’s relatively broad shoreline. Its combination of white sand, clear water, and surrounding greenery gives visitors a classic tropical beach setting.
A Marine Life Destination
Moalboal is well known for its rich marine environment, with coral reefs and diverse marine life found along its coast. The area’s waters have long attracted divers and snorkelers, helping establish Moalboal as one of Cebu’s recognized diving destinations.
Snorkeling and Diving
Visitors can swim and snorkel along the coast, while local operators offer diving activities in the wider Moalboal area. Pescador Island is another popular destination for divers and snorkelers, with boat trips available from Moalboal.

The Famous Sardine Run
The sardine run is one of Moalboal’s most famous marine attractions. Huge schools of sardines gather in the waters off the coast, creating large moving formations that can be viewed by snorkelers and divers. The sardine activity is more closely associated with the Panagsama Beach area, rather than being directly at Basdaku, so visitors should not expect to see the sardines immediately offshore from White Beach.
A Beach Day at Basdaku
For visitors who simply want to enjoy the shore, Basdaku is a good place to spend a slower afternoon. You can swim, walk along the sand, relax under the sun, or find a spot to watch the sunset over the water.
Try Other Water Activities
Depending on current operators and sea conditions, activities around Moalboal can include kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and diving. Equipment rentals and activity rates vary, so confirm the price and inclusions with the operator before joining.

Help Keep the Coast Clean
Moalboal’s coastal environment supports both tourism and local livelihoods. Visitors should avoid stepping on corals, never touch marine animals, and take their trash with them. Using reef-safe practices also helps protect the marine habitat that draws visitors to the area.
How To Get There?
Location: Barangay Saavedra, Moalboal, Cebu, Philippines
By Car: From Cebu City, take the South Road Properties and continue south toward Carcar, then follow the highway toward Moalboal. From Moalboal town, follow the local road toward Basdaku/White Beach. The beach is several kilometers from the town center, so use Google Maps or Waze for the final approach and follow local signs or directions when needed.
By Commute: From Cebu South Bus Terminal, take a bus bound for Moalboal and get off in the Moalboal town area. From there, take a habal-habal or tricycle toward Basdaku or White Beach. Tell the driver you are going to White Beach in Barangay Saavedra, since Moalboal’s Panagsama Beach is a different coastal area.
When To Visit
For a more relaxed beach experience, visiting on a weekday or arriving earlier in the day can help avoid larger crowds. Always check the weather and sea conditions before planning water activities, particularly during periods of strong winds or rough seas.

A Different Side of Moalboal
While Moalboal is famous for its sardine run and diving scene, Basdaku offers a more traditional beach-day experience with its wide sandy shoreline and open coastal views. Pair it with other Moalboal attractions, or simply spend the day swimming, relaxing, and watching the sunset by the sea.
