Located between the barangays of Tapilon and Maya in Daanbantayan lies Bukana, a freshwater river that flows directly into the sea. Known among locals as one of the clearest rivers in Cebu, Bukana’s glasslike waters reveal a stunning gradient of turquoise and emerald hues.

The gentle current, shaded by coconut trees and mangroves, makes it a refreshing escape for swimming, kayaking, or simply lounging by the banks. With its raw beauty, Bukana has become a rising eco-tourism spot while still maintaining its quiet, provincial charm.

Why It’s Special

What makes Bukana unique is its perfect blend of freshwater and saltwater. The river originates inland and flows straight into the open sea, creating a distinct ecosystem where fish thrive and locals still cast their nets for fresh catch. The water is so clear that you can see the riverbed, reflecting the sunlight in sparkling patterns. Unlike commercialized beaches, Bukana remains untouched, making it a true off-the-grid escape for those who prefer tranquility over crowds.

How to Get There

Location: Between the barangays of Tapilon and Maya, Daanbantayan, Cebu

  • By Car: From Cebu City, drive north via the Cebu North Road (National Highway) passing through Mandaue, Consolacion, Danao, and Bogo. Continue towards Daanbantayan town proper and follow signs leading to Tapilon Port or Maya Port. Bukana sits right in between these two barangays. Travel time usually takes 4–5 hours by private car, depending on traffic. Parking is limited, but there are nearby open spaces where locals may allow you to leave your vehicle.
  • By Commute: For commuters, head to the North Bus Terminal in Cebu City and ride a bus bound for Maya Port. Inform the driver or conductor to drop you off at Tapilon or Maya, then take a habal-habal or tricycle to reach Bukana. Since the place is not yet heavily commercialized, it’s best to ask locals for directions, everyone in the area knows where Bukana is.
