Mangasang Falls is Calling

On the farthest edge of Cebu City lies a secret that few outside the upland barangay of Tagbao know about. Mangasang Falls, also called Mangasang-a Falls, is one of the area’s hidden natural wonders. While locals often spend their weekends at the more familiar Liki Falls, Mangasang remains largely untouched, visited only by those willing to venture off the usual trail.

Mountain or River Trail

There are two routes to choose from, the mountain trail and the river trail. The mountain path offers the classic upland experience, with steep ascents and descents that open into sweeping views of farmlands and mountain ridges. The river trail, on the other hand, is more challenging, with boulders, slippery stones, and narrow channels of flowing water. Many choose to take one trail going in and the other on the way back for the full experience.

Cascades Along the Way

Along the trek are several small waterfalls, but one stands out as a “level two” version of Mangasang Falls, a smaller waterfall perfect for those who prefer a light shower without diving into deep waters. The main falls, however, are a different story. It drops into a cold, deep basin that is both beautiful and intimidating. The area is said to have been used by the Philippine Army and special forces for training, a testament to its rugged and demanding environment.

How To Get There?

Location: Brgy Tagbao Rd, Cebu City, 6000 Cebu

By Car: Head north from Cebu City, then follow the road toward Brgy. Tagbao. From there, look for local markers or ask residents for directions to the Mangasang Trail entrance, as signage may be limited.

By Commute: Take a jeepney or bus bound and get off near the junction going to Brgy. Tagbao. From there, ride a habal-habal (motorbike taxi) to the barangay proper, then ask locals to guide you to the Mangasang Trail entrance, since the area has limited signage.

Mangasang Falls is not the kind of place for casual outings or loud gatherings. It is quiet, isolated, and unspoiled by commercial development. No cottages, no vendors, no noise, just the sound of rushing water and the untouched beauty of the mountains. For those who decide to visit, the best way to honor the site is to respect the locals, keep it pristine, and leave nothing behind but memories.
