Swinging through the trees, chattering excitedly, and curiously observing visitors–the Philippine long-tailed macaques of Oslob are a fascinating sight to behold.

These intelligent primates have made their home in the lush forests of Barangay Hagdan, where they thrive under the protection of the Oslob Macaque Sanctuary.
Unlike the usual tourist spots in Cebu, this hidden gem offers a unique opportunity to witness the natural behavior of these lively creatures up close.
A Hidden Gem in Southern Cebu

While many tourists come to Oslob for its crystal-clear waters, few know about the thriving monkey population in Sitio Bulak.
Featured on the TV show Born to Be Wild, this sanctuary has quickly gained attention for its thriving primate community and the locals’ efforts to protect their habitat.
The sanctuary is home to the Philippine long-tailed macaques, also known as Mondays by the locals. These monkeys are highly interactive, often approaching visitors with curiosity.
Unlike typical wildlife encounters, the Oslob Macaque Sanctuary provides an up-close yet ethical experience with these fascinating creatures.
The Conservation Efforts Behind the Sanctuary

Managed by the Hagdan Oslob Monkey Protectors and Farmers Association (HOMPFA), the sanctuary is more than just a tourist attraction–it’s a conservation initiative.
Once littered with trash, the canyon where these monkeys reside has been restored, thanks to the dedication of the local community and environmental organizations.
Beyond just protecting the monkeys, the sanctuary also supports local farmers.
By allowing tourists to feed the monkeys, it reduces the risk of these primates raiding nearby crops, creating a harmonious balance between humans and wildlife.
