Guide for First Time Flyers

Flying for the first time can be exciting and nerve-wracking. Airports are big, the process is unfamiliar, and even packing can feel confusing. But don’t worry. This guide will help first-time flyers navigate their entire journey smoothly from packing to landing.

Pack Smart

Start by checking your airline’s baggage policy. Most airlines allow 7 kilograms for hand-carry and generally 32 kilograms for checked baggage. Use lightweight luggage and avoid overpacking. Keep essentials like ID, phone charger, jacket, and documents in your hand-carry. Liquids over 100 milliliters are not allowed in hand-carry baggage so pack toiletries properly.

Use small pouches or packing cubes to organize your clothes and items. This makes security checks easier and keeps your things tidy throughout the trip.

Arrive Early

If your flight is domestic, arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure. For international flights, be there three hours earlier. This gives you enough time for check-in, security screening, and finding your boarding gate without rushing.

Print your ticket if needed or have it ready on your phone. Keep your valid ID or passport handy since you will show it multiple times.

Understand the Airport Process

Once at the airport, go to your airline’s check-in counter. Present your ID and booking details. After getting your boarding pass, head to the security check. Remove any metal items and place your bags on the scanner.

After security, proceed to your assigned boarding gate. Check the monitors for updates in case there are any gate changes or flight delays. Stay alert for announcements.

Boarding the Plane

Wait for your group or row to be called before boarding. Airline staff will check your boarding pass and ID again. Walk through the jet bridge or ride a shuttle to the plane.

Once on board, find your seat number and store your hand-carry bag in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. Fasten your seatbelt and listen to the safety instructions.

During the Flight

Takeoff might feel unusual if it’s your first time. Your ears may pop due to air pressure changes. You can chew gum or swallow to ease the pressure. If you feel dizzy, turn on the air vent and relax. Flight attendants are available if you need help.

Use the flight time to rest or read. Some airlines offer free snacks or drinks while others sell them. You may also bring your own snacks as long as they are dry and not too strong-smelling.

Arriving at Your Destination

Once the plane lands, wait until the seatbelt sign is off before standing up. Exit the aircraft calmly and follow the signs to the baggage claim area if you checked in luggage.
