The trail to the cave begins behind the local residences and leads through vegetable farms, banana plantations, and flower fields, many of which serve as the community’s main source of livelihood.
The trek to Binuthan Cave typically takes one hour. The trail is mostly downhill and becomes increasingly steep, muddy, and slippery as hikers approach the cave. While the hike may seem manageable at first, the final portion involves ascending and descending wet boulders, and crossing shallow streams, making it important to wear appropriate footwear and bring only essential items.
Cave Features and Conditions
Binuthan Cave is notable for a waterfall that flows directly from its mouth, cascading down large rock formations into a natural pool below. Entry into the cave requires swimming approximately 10 meters across water that reaches depths of up to 12 meters.
Inside, the cave’s passage narrows considerably. Visitors must pull themselves through tight rock corridors where swimming is no longer possible. Instead, progress is made by climbing along jagged stone surfaces, with parts of the path consisting of chest-deep to knee-deep water.
The cave is a fascinating natural wonder, showcasing crystalline rock formations and layers of minerals that captivate the eye. As you navigate its depths, the knife-like textures of the stones demand slow and careful movement, ensuring safety on this uneven terrain. How To Get There?
Exact Location: Sitio Morga, Barangay Bonbon, Tabogon, Cebu, Philippines
- By Commute: Binuthan Cave is situated in the mountainous interior of Tabogon, approximately three to four hours from Cebu City. To reach the site, travelers must first take a Route 04H jeepney from Lahug Market. While the 04H line serves several upland barangays, only a few trips go as far as Bonbon — passengers are advised to confirm the destination with the driver before boarding. The fare typically costs ₱25. The jeepney route ends near a water refilling station, which serves as the last stop. From there, motorcycle taxis (habal-habal) can be hired to take visitors to Sitio Morga, the jump-off point for the cave trek. The motorcycle ride takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes and features scenic views of Tabogon’s rural terrain.
