It’s never too late to learn new things…

Summer isn’t just for the kids anymore, especially not when you’ve reached that golden age of “tiguwang na man ko, pero game gihapon!” So, whether you’re trying to escape the daily stresses of your career, surviving that existential dread that hits your thoughts during late nights, or simply filling the void that used to be occupied by Saturday night laags, then this summer is the perfect time to try something new!

For the Curious, Bored, Brave, & Slightly Burned Out Adults
Daghan kaayog options on things you can try sa Cebu, but here are some that we have done ourselves as individuals in our late twenties and up:
Choral Singing (Without the Commitment)

Love singing, but not into every Saturday and Sunday night’s rehearsals? Then a one-day choral singing event is just the perfect opportunity for you! 2TinCans, a musical theater organization, launched their One Day Ensemble event which is an open group session or short-term choir workshop that lets you enjoy the vocalization as if you’re part of an ensemble of a show. Previously, they rehearsed the songs “One Short Day” from Wicked and “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen.

Adult Ballet

Growing up with “Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princess” made a lot of us dream of becoming a ballerina, or at least dance while wearing a tutu. Well, the good thing is that grace and sass aren’t just for the youth! You can channel your inner prima ballerina even at the age of 30 or 40, even beyond 50! Cebu is now home to many ballet centers and studios such as the Ballet Academy of Cebu where they offer classes for as young as 3 up to senior citizens. Who knew?

Baking

Bread, cookies, and trauma healing; baking offers all three! There’s something therapeutic about kneading dough while listening to your “Hugot Spotify Playlist.” And the fact that you get to eat your emotions in the end is already a win-win! As a non-baker who attended a baking workshop (once), I can guarantee you that you’ll enjoy it, albeit stress a bit on designing with icing, even if you’re surrounded by kids with their moms and dads while you’re all alone. It’s worth it!

Musical Theater

Always felt you were meant for the stage? Well, I did, and so that’s when the decision came to join a local workshop to live out this Broadway-bisaya fantasy! The best thing about having this passion and dream in this generation is the availability of options as the theater scene in Cebu keeps growing. And if you’re shy, then do it anyway! It’s better to be dramatic in a space where it’s actually encouraged, than to do so in the workplace or any other place where drama just won’t mesh well.

Then trying out different forms of martial arts such as Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or Arnis (support local!) is the way to go. There’s even a stunt training program in Cebu where you’ll gain discipline, confidence, and maybe even the ability to karate-chop toxic energy as you go.

You get to live your dream as Katniss Everdeen or be more like Hawkeye! The best part, they both have an indoor and outdoor location so you will have no excuse regardless of the weather.

Bonus Tips for the Tiguwangs in Training
Di ta magdanghag kay edaran na ta, therefore, don’t forget to bring these along:
- Water. Lots of it. Hydration is no joke.
- Stretch first. Ayaw kompyansa. Your body isn’t 16 anymore.
- Don’t be shy. Everyone’s too busy worrying about themselves.
- Document it. Who says your summer can’t go viral?

Tiguwang na ka? So what? That just means you now have the budget, the time, and the zero-care attitude to try all the things you were once too shy (or too broke) to do. Whether you’re doing a pirrouette, belting a tune, brewing coffee, or skating—just go for it. After all, learning never gets old.
