From “Lawis” to “Madridejos”
Originally, the municipality was known as “Lawis,” which meant “promontory,” or a raised land overseeing a low body of water. Soon enough, the place was renamed “Madridejos” in honor of the former archbishop of Cebu, Benito Romero de Madridejos. However, amidst the name change, most locals still refer to the original name today due to them being used to it.

HOW TO GET THERE?
Exact Location: Madridejos, Bantayan Island
- By Commute: Start your adventure at the Cebu North Bus Terminal and board a bus bound for Hagnaya Port, San Remigio. Upon arrival, catch a ferry to Santa Fe Pier in Bantayan Island, approximately an hour-long ride. Finally, complete your journey with a short 20 to 30-minute ride by taxi, tricycle, or moto taxi to reach the charming town of Madridejos.
