A viral video on X.com (formerly Twitter) shows an adult buying many toys at a famous toy shop in the Philippines after receiving his salary. The video sparked a heated debate when one netizen asked, “Bakit kaya kapag sinabing “healing my inner child,” kailangan konektado  konsumerismo?” (Why is it that when someone says they’re ‘healing their inner child,’ it has to involve consumerism?)

This question received a variety of reactions online. Many users sided with the original poster, arguing that not everyone had the opportunity to buy toys as children, and now that they have the financial means, they’re indulging in their childhood dreams. Others defended the poster’s choices, saying that how one chooses to spend their salary is nobody’s business but their own. However, it does beg the question: is it truly an act of “healing our inner child” or is it just a made-up reason for the financially irresponsible?

The Psychology of Toy Buying

Many videos are circulating online nowadays which touches on our childhood nostalgia, which is concerning from a psychological point of view since there seems to be an increased longing for the past as opposed to dreaming of what can be done in the present and future. Although reconnecting with childhood interests can be therapeutic, it should not be done constantly or as a way to cope with the stresses, anxiety, and pressures of modern life.

Still, like all things, there is a way to find the right balance for it. The key is to find healthy ways to indulge without compromising one’s financial well-being. If you’re unsure, here are a few suggestions you can take note:

  • Set a Clear Budget: Once you have a specific amount in mind for self-care activities, including toy purchases, stay within it. This helps ensure that indulgence doesn’t lead to financial problems.
  • Consider Experiences Over Materials: How about instead of buying toys or items, choose to purchase experiences instead such as going on a trip or attending a workshop for a new hobby. Doing so will not only add joy to your life but also a usable experience in the future.
  • Moderation Is the Key: It’s okay to enjoy toys and nostalgic items, but moderation is important. Choose a few meaningful items rather than a large quantity.
