Congratulations, Caloy!
Carlos Edriel Yulo, a remarkable gymnast from Manila, has marked his name in history as the first Filipino to win two gold medals at the Paris Olympics 2024. His story is not just about his incredible achievements but also about the dreams, hard work, and passionate heart that defined his journey.
The Observer Becomes The Athlete
Carlos Yulo’s journey to becoming an Olympic champion began in the bustling city of Manila. Born on February 16, 2000, he showed an early passion for gymnastics. He loved the sport since he was a young lad and would watch other gymnasts train to compete at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
At seven years old, his grandfather, Rodrigo Frisco, saw him practicing flips at a playground. This hobby of Carlos became the turning point of his life when his Grandpa decided to take him to the Gymnastic Association of the Philippines (GAP) to undergo a formal training. And all those training hours paid off when he joined the National Capital Region’s gymnastic team.
In 2008 he joined his first big event, the Palarong Pambansa; and by 2010, he started bringing home gold medals in the individual all-around and floor exercise competitions.
Gaining International Recognition
In 2016, Carlos was offered a life-changing opportunity when the Japan Olympic Association gave him a scholarship to train in “The Land of the Rising Sun;” therefore, he packed up his bags and moved. With a degree in Literature, Carlos graduated in 2022 at Teikyo University in Tokyo, Japan.
When 2018 came, he made history by winning a bronze medal at the World Championships, marking his name as the Philippines first medalist in the event.
By 2019, Carlos won in the floor exercise competition at the World Championship in Doha, Qatar. His performances continued to impress spectators and judges alike, with him bagging gold medals at the Asian Championship and the Southeast Asian Games. Each victory was a testament to his skill, determination, and the support of his family and coaches.
The Olympic Journey
Carlos Yulo’s first Olympic appearance was at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which was held in 2021. Though he narrowly missed a medal in the vault finals, he remained determined and focused on his goals and used the experience as a motivation to work harder.
The 2024 Paris Olympics marked a historic moment for Carlos Yulo and our country, the Philippines. A shout of celebratory joy echoed throughout the nation as he won not one, but two gold medals in the competition; making him the “First Filipino to Win Two Gold Olympic Medals.”
His triumphs in Paris were a proud moment for the nation, highlighting not only his skill but also his perseverance and love for gymnastics.
Carlos Yulo’s story is a heartwarming reminder of what can be achieved with passion and hard work. From his early days in Manila to becoming the first Filipino to win two Olympic gold medals, he has become an inspiration to many. His achievements go beyond the medals; they represent the power of perseverance and the fulfillment of a dream.
Carlos Yulo has made his country proud and continues to inspire with his remarkable story.
