Penumbral lunar eclipses are safe to watch unlike solar eclipses. So you can look up as much as you want and hold your gaze for as long as it is there without any worries.
When the Earth passes in front of the sun and the moon, a penumbral lunar eclipse happens, which casts a shadow on the moon. The moon only travels across the penumbra or the outer edge of Earth’s shadow, therefore this shadow is not a total blackout. The moon now seems slightly darker and more reddish as a result.
