A Business Born From Everyday Needs

Before entering the baking business, Julia Gandionco worked as a canteen concessionaire in Cebu during the 1970s. She managed three factory canteens that served thousands of workers every day, creating a constant demand for fresh bread. To meet the growing orders, she relied on several local bakeries to supply the bread needed for her operations.

The idea of opening her own bakery came after one of the bakers she worked with encouraged her to start her own business and hire him as her baker. Although she had no formal background in baking, Julia embraced the opportunity and learned the trade through hands-on experience.

The First Julie’s Bakeshop Opens in Mandaue

On January 6, 1981, Julia opened the very first Julie’s Bakeshop in Wireless, Mandaue City using around ₱19,000 in savings. She was already 50 years old when she ventured into the business, proving that it is never too late to begin something new. The bakery quickly gained loyal customers by serving freshly baked bread throughout the day.

One of the concepts that set Julie’s apart was allowing customers to watch the baking process inside a clean and organized production area. Combined with warm customer service and freshly baked products, the idea became one of the bakery’s defining features and helped establish its reputation.

Expanding Beyond Cebu

As demand continued to grow, Julie’s Bakeshop opened more branches across Cebu before expanding outside the province. In 1988, the company launched its first branch beyond Cebu in Iloilo City, marking the start of its nationwide expansion. Family members and trusted business partners helped manage the growing number of stores.

To support its expanding operations, Julie’s Franchise Corporation was established in 1998 to oversee franchise management and business development. Warehouses were later opened in Luzon and Mindanao, allowing the company to strengthen its distribution network and reach more communities across the country.

A Bakery That Changed the Industry

Julie’s Bakeshop introduced practices that later became common in many bakeries, including staff training, standardized uniforms, and transparent baking areas visible to customers. These innovations helped raise industry standards while building customer confidence in the quality and cleanliness of its products.

The company also invested in marketing, launching its first national television commercial in 2004. Through franchising and consistent branding, Julie’s continued to grow into one of the Philippines’ most recognized bakery chains.

More than 40 years after opening its first store, Julie’s Bakeshop has grown to over 500 branches nationwide while remaining true to its commitment of serving fresh bread every day. The brand has also expanded internationally, opening branches in Indonesia in 2013 and Canada in 2015.

Julia Gandionco’s story remains a testament to perseverance, hard work, and faith. What started as a practical solution to meet the bread needs of a factory canteen became a business that has served millions of Filipinos and inspired generations of entrepreneurs across the country.
