Anhi ‘ta sa Mount Makatol Pahuway

Mount Makatol is a rarely climbed peak that rises above Copper City with a calm, rural mood. The area feels untouched, with thick forest, small farm paths, and wide open skies. Two pale limestone walls cut through the mountain’s green face, hinting at how rugged the climb will be. Few hikers come here, which keeps the mountain raw and unpolished.

The Climb and the Forest

The trail begins on rough community roads before slipping into deep vegetation. Some parts are easy walks, while others demand steady footing on steep ground. Plants crowd the path, pulling at clothes and skin. True to its name, “makatol” or itchy, the mountain is lined with thorny vines, sharp leaves, and fine hairs that leave marks long after the hike. Every step feels earned.

Views from the Top

At the summit, the land opens up. Below lies Lutopan, a small township resting beside forested hills. Nearby, the huge open pit of Atlas Mining Corporation cuts sharply into the land. The contrast is striking, green slopes on one side, deep industrial scars on the other, showing both balance and cost in Cebu’s highlands.

How to Get There?

Location: Barangay Lutopan, Toledo City, Cebu.

By Car: From Cebu City, drive west toward Toledo City via the Cebu South Road or Transcentral Highway. Once in Toledo proper, head to Lutopan and follow local roads toward the upland barangays of Copper City. Parking is usually arranged near the jump-off area with help from locals. A local guide is strongly advised due to unclear trails.

By Commute: Take a bus or van from Cebu City to Toledo City. From the Toledo terminal, ride a habal-habal (motorbike taxi) or jeepney bound for Lutopan. Ask locals for directions to the Mt. Makatol jump-off point. Expect walking on dirt roads before the actual trail begins. Start early, and coordinate with residents who know the area well.

Mount Makatol is not a polished climb. It is raw, demanding, and quietly beautiful, best suited for hikers who value silence, effort, and unfiltered landscapes.
