A first edition of “El Filibusterismo” signed by Jose Rizal recently stole the spotlight at a Philippine auction. The final price stunned collectors and history enthusiasts alike. This rare copy not only carries a hefty price tag but also a remarkable story of struggle and perseverance.
A Masterpiece Forged in Hardship

Rizal wrote El Filibusterismo during one of the most challenging periods of his life. His family lost their lands, his father and brother were exiled, and he faced heartbreak with the loss of his long-time love, Leonor Rivera. Financially strained, Rizal lived frugally on tea and biscuits while arranging pay-as-you-print installments with a printing press in Ghent, Belgium. Each copy produced was a victory over personal and colonial obstacles.
Dedication To Martyrs

The novel is dedicated to the martyred priests Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora, known as GomBurZa, whose execution inspired Rizal and his revolutionary ideas. Its pages chronicle the transformation of Crisóstomo Ibarra into Simoun, a wealthy jeweler plotting revolt against Spanish colonial rule. The story served as a beacon for Filipino patriots and played a pivotal role in inspiring the Philippine Revolution.
Provenance Adds To Value

This edition belonged to Don Trinidad Pardo de Tavera, a noted physician and historian. Rizal’s handwritten dedication is clearly visible on the title page, dated September 16, 1891, addressed to Pardo de Tavera. Originally estimated at P5 million, the book soared to P21 million at the Leon Gallery auction, including buyer’s premium and taxes. It now holds the record as the priciest book sold in the country.
Printing Against All Odds

Rizal faced many obstacles getting the book printed. He moved from Paris to Ghent to find affordable accommodations and printing services. Friends like Jose Basa and Valentin Ventura helped fund the publication. Despite limited copies and the Spanish regime’s strict penalties for possession, Rizal persisted, ensuring the novel reached the Philippines and left a mark on the nation’s history.
A Symbol Of Resistance

El Filibusterismo carries a message of subversion against colonial authorities, urging Filipinos to rise for freedom. It is a testament to Rizal’s vision, courage, and sacrifice. This record-breaking edition represents not just a rare collector’s item but a tangible link to the Philippines’ fight for independence and a reminder of the enduring legacy of its national hero.
